Personally, I find it easier to just channel out the entire first two layers off the surface, so that anything trying to get in has to go through one of my approved entrances. I still keep the floor on z0, of course, to prevent fliers, so I guess you could say I just channel out the second and third layers.

The 1xX hallway isn't a bad idea, once you completely fill it you can put a statue in the entrance to block the entire area off anyway. That'll most definitely solve the pathing issue, and can be used as emergency distractions should a building destroyer come up from the caverns and catch you unawares.

If dropped items could trigger pressure plates, you could have the dwarves shoot in such a way that if they missed they could send invaders falling to their doom through a cleverly placed floor hatch.

I usually cremate my dead dwarves, and instead my massive entrance hallway is lined with slabs memorializing every dwarf who has passed. Kind of a "Hall of Honor".

That isn't a bad idea for anti-necromancering, actually. Do you use fire, or just dump the corpses into magma?
