re ToEE - CoE:

As we all know, ToEE had a disastrous release. Crashes, tons of bugs etc. CoE is a community modpack, which has been in development for years [the first release dates back to 2003] in order to fix the bugs & crashes, enhance the gameplay with adding new areas, items. etc.
This is the full changelog up to v8.1.0.
As you can see, it's a huge freakin' list of fixes, tweaks and enhancements. This is probably one of the biggest community "let's fix it" modpacks released for a game ever. It just shows that the game had a huge potential @ release, even tho it has failed because of being in a beta state at release. [I never had any crashes with the 7.x CoE modpack btw..]
Anyway, just some additional notes: The story in the game is not on BG II. level, but the combat system and the combat itself blows out other cRPGs out of the water IMO, but again I always preferred the turn-based combat [..especially if it's based on a system like d&d 3.5] over other systems like the RTwP.. The game and the battles ain't that hard at all, since CoE is "newbie friendly", [especially if you powergame] but even in that case, it's fun as hell. [+ Which RPG is hard if you powergame anyway?]
Ideally, the perfect cRPG recipe is [again..IMO]: The deep story[line] and quests of BG II. combined with the ToEE CoE combat system/gameplay.

All in all it's a good game, far from the masterpiece

I've spent like 10-12h on the game so far, but you are absolutely right. [I am going to restart with a new party after 1.03] It's a decent RPG [one of the best which have been released in the last years], but it's "not a BG II.", if you know what I mean...but again BG II. was a masterpiece, it's #2 on the list of my all time favourite RPGs. [ToEE with the CoE modpack is the #1.]

Yeah, I decided not to buy Dungeons 1. after reading reviews like this one on Gamespot.

PS. Wow, I haven't noticed that Dungeons 2. will cost 44.99€ like an AAA product. They better make it good in that case...lol.  :o

Dungeons 2 is going to be released in a couple of weeks btw. Dungeons 1. was far from being perfect [according to the reviews], but perhaps they managed to fix the biggest problems for part 2. I'm going to wait for some reviews for that game as well, before even thinking about buying a DK clone. WotU feels like a beta product according to the reviews. [Crashes, memory leaks, bugs etc.]

I heard that the save function wasn't working in the Steam release [v1.0]. Is that true?  :o

*edit*

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/04/01/dungeon-keeper-remake/2/

One of the biggest stumbling blocks turned out to be a save/load system. Bread and butter for most any PC game, but a serious headache for War for the Overworld. “We got it working, then every single change we made to the game broke it, and it was like urgh. Eventually we decided that we’re not officially supporting it until launch date. Even in the current live build on Steam there is no saving and loading. We’ve now got it so whenever we change something we’re going and testing saving and loading and it’s ok, but to do that for eight months would have been a complete, ridiculous waste of time.”

Wow... :D

~75mins of gameplay footage: http://www.twitch.tv/slitherinegroup/c/6455579

It looks very promising and polished already. I usually never pay for Early Acces games, but now I've decided to buy it on apr 9, when the EA will be available. The devs have mentioned on Twitch yesterday, that the game will stay in EA for ~1 year, because they want to work with the community to add new gameplay elements & tweaking + enhancing what is needed before they release v1.0. [Like a supply system, new unit and hero abilities like the shield wall vs cavalry charges etc. etc.]
They've also mentioned that modding is supported, we can create basically everything, including units, heroes, new realm spells, new maps etc.

Heh, it must be fun. I decided to start over once the 1.03 patch is out....the bugs are just too annoying to play on now. I am going to create some weird party I guess. Well...weird...surely not a party of 6 wizzies.  :D

My game is now more or less unplayable.

There's a bug with the item called Drinking Horn of Moderation. If you ever equip it it will permanently ruin your cipher character and it will persist across saves and even if you remove the item.

Basically it makes it so you can never increase focus in combat ever again. If you've played cipher, this is basically GG. The best part is this item is extremely easy to get and super good for ciphers so you're bound to use it on one the moment you get it.

What a stupid bug.

Yeah.  ::)

..Now some funny stuff with regard to Obsidian & the bugz! :D

Yeah, but new level 1 hirelings are 250 a pop. I didn't realize that the stash was effectively unlimited storage, so I wasn't looting everything in sight, but even if I had, I probably wouldn't have enough to buy a full party straight away.

It's easy to collect that 1k for the 4 hirelings in the beginning, if you loot everything in the starter areas and sell all the crap @ your first visit in Gilded Vale. That's what I did. [I've recruited the wizard companion, so I had to pay for 4 hirelings only.]

I find the friendly fire/cone effect spells awful in this and just don't use them as everyone CONSTANTLY walks into it.

It requires some additional party related MM [positioning], but it's manageable. It's a tad harder, when you have a squishy, melee oriented party, but again, who plays this game without a main tank and an off tank?..and as always, CC is a powerful tool, especially in the early phases of the battles. 2 tanks and CC'ed enemies = AoE paradise! :)

Even tho, now that I think about it...I am going to test some weird party combinations later on for sure. 8)

The expansion looks good, but my biggest problem with the game is the tactical battle system. AoW III. battles are just plain boring compared to the AoW: SM battles IMHO. AFAIK they won't upgrade anything with regard to the combat system, but again, it must be good enough if the game is so popular.

After playing for like 6 hours so far, I can state, that this is one of the best big, "commercial" RPGs released in the last years, along with Divinity - Original Sin. If you like RPGs, don't hesitate to buy it.
