General Discussion / Re: Which is better: Sex or Violence?

In real life? Sex.

In games? Violence.

Needing to clean up after feces is a hallmark of a truly awful roomate.

Life Advice / Re: I'm a creative failure
« on: April 26, 2009, 02:25:46 pm »
I had a particularly good Creative Writing professor who tore up my work good... I learned to accept criticism and because of that I got pretty talented at writing.

I suspect you have a difficult time writing beginnings, which, in my opinion, are the hardest to write. You can solve this problem by writing the most interesting parts of your story first, then adding the beginning in later. By that time, you've probably found a much more interesting way to introduce characters, setting and so forth.

Life Advice / Re: You, Me, and the USMA

My parents aren't from the US though, so I really don't know what the typical American parental traditions are. But my parents are all "Oh hey, not only do you have to go to college, it has to be a really good college. Or we'll disown you. You know, we're about ten times smarter than you are, we could have been doctors, but we were too busy being oppressed in the old country. So now the task lies with you. Because we want free healthcare."

Parents are different. My dad was like: "You should follow my in my footsteps: leave your comfortable home and bum across Asia, smuggling goods to make money, get exotic diseases, fight Indonesian pirates, get captured by Thai guerrillas, and flee the Khmer Rouge. Then hitchhike your way to England and get treated for hepatitis before you die." I think my dad would actually be pretty disappointed if I didn't do at least a little bit of that.

Life Advice / Re: College Choices...

I don't know either of those universities, but do yourself a favor by going to a middle-of-the-road university and save your parents and/or yourself some money. If you are smart, you are going to be smart no matter where you go.

The more desperate someone is to prove their intelligence, the more stupid they are.

A while back there was a huge surge in interest in DF. It had a feature in PC Gamer, I think, and was on the CD. Yahoo wrote a blurb on it and horribly misrepresented it, as I recall. It's quieted down a bit, but I think things will start heating back up with the new release.

DF General Discussion / Re: Do You Picture Female Dwarfs as Having Beards?

I imagine them with beards, but without moustaches. So they have chin-beards. I dunno why. It makes sense in my head.

I don't seem to remember ever having to calculate logarithms while playing Dwarf Fortress. Or really even add and subtract.

DF Suggestions / Re: Really Really Really Random Races
« on: September 06, 2008, 12:34:50 pm »
I'm not against random races... but I probably won't use them. A flasgerdan doesn't mean much to me, but I know what a dwarf is. This is the basic problem with random stuff: it's usually pretty unremarkable compared to other random things. There are exceptions, but they're usually outliers. Just look at the name generator: once and a long, long while you'll get something really memorable like "Haunting Whispers of the Dead" but usually it's weird like "the orange cheeses of gravel".

I guess what I'm saying is that there's a time and a place for randomness, but pure randomness can get really muddy.

DF Suggestions / Re: Creeping Death

I wouldn't mind this if it was some sort of map feature, and you knew what you were getting into when you settled it. As a random event... well, I'd hope it was pretty rare.

1) More detailed statues.
2) Choose which material to encrust with.
3) Make sparring less lethal.

DF Suggestions / Re: The Master List of Suggestions
« on: September 05, 2008, 10:30:32 am »
Here are the two ideas I'd posted before.

Family Names
http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=4404.msg61027#msg61027

Random Riddle Generator
http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=21603.msg231955#msg231955

There was another one. But it was a general discussion, so I'm not posting it.

It really is one of the most difficult languages in the world

To be fair, the most difficult language in the world is whichever one you're currently trying to learn.

Well I gave this a bit to much thought.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I imagine that would get kinda cumbersome. Plus for all that effort, well, you might as well play the computer game. No offense.

Not to say that Dwarf Fortress absolutely could not be a board game, but you'd need at least a little abstraction to make it playable. Actually, a lot of abstraction.

In terms of random word generation, I was just going to have a word printed on the bottom of each of the cards, and the players draw the words randomly to make names. It's not true random name generation, but it'll do.

EDIT: God, my website sucks. I don't know anything about HTML. It's ugly as sin. I'm going to have to rewrite my entire website to make it navigable. Sigh.
