You should be, I will be investigating the feasibility of surrounding the apartments you built with a magma moat.

My idea was to have a single tile of wall that separates a magma and a water moat, so that if you open it, everything would be covered in obsidian. But pure magma sounds nice too.
Anyway, try to test a little, too. I know, that's boring.

Yep, no sound is normal. The download is quite big as it is, Meph removed the music to save bandwidth. You can copy it over from vanilla DF, use soundsense, etc. This is normal.

Ima do something with magma too.

Somehow I'm glad to be dead.

Mechanixm:

- All that remains from the brick oven got moved to the kiln. Problem: it requires fuel now. Too bad, it's really not worth it anymore this way. Of course there's magma kiln, but unless you embark at a volcano, that's a longshot.
- Stone beds without cloth: absolutely seconded. Cloth, as a material in general, is pretty fuckin annoying.
- Armor sets missing gauntlets: they can't be made with custom reactions, because custom reactions can't produce left and right handed items. Hardcoded problem, not much you can do about it.
- Crucible: As I said, a bit broken right now.
- Blast furnace: Gone since 1.9.5. I miss it too, simplified a lot of things.
- Mithril forge: It's a separate building because we shouldn't have it by default. It will require a blueprint that can be aquired via trade, from elves only.
- Dynamite ammo sounds freakin' awesome if you ask me. Who doesn't love explosions?
- Decisions: Meph. Sure, quite a lot of us joined up with him, but this is still his pet project, and always will be. Quite a lot of major decisions are routinely put up for vote in the main thread. Merging the kiln and the brick oven, removing the blast furnace came from those votes for example.

First year is over. Whoever is after me (Panopticon, I guess?): sorry. I left the place in a kind of unfininshed mess, with a lot of ungoing jobs, and two founders dead, my own dwarf included. Because of that, I saw no reason to build my impenetrable doomquarters, I guess that's postponed to my next term.

If you see a decent sworddwarf/legion dwarf migrant, give it to me. Male/female doesn't matter.

Oh and of course, add me to the end of the turn list, that goes without saying.

Winter, 301
The diplomat left, cursing as he stormed out of the fortress. Huh. I wonder what upset him, there's practically NOTHING here.

Now Smakemupagus is dead. The fuck is happening here? I must be slipping in my old age, I never lose people, and now this is the second time, and the second important person. And the first one was myself. I'm beginning to think to pass on overseeing duties to someone a bit more... focused than me.

I finally appointed a broker and bookkeeper today. Nothing special, just a random woodworker, and if anybody has a better suggestion, or would like to take on the job himself, I'm open to anything. After all, it seems all of us are equally incompetent at record keeping and trading, so it doesn't really matter.

My tomb is completed. I say it fits a leader like me: smooth marble floor, various engravings on the walls (including an exceptionally designed image of forgotten beast, which is somehow OUR symbol as a government - and they say I'm a pessimist), some potted plants, a fine marble coffin, and four mithril statues to stand guard over my material remains.

Steel production seems impossible. The smelters told me that hey need three steel bars to construct the crucible, which is used to refine iron - supposedly. That used to be the case, but then again, it used to NOT need steel, just blocks and easy stuff like that. We have something called finishing forge, and that lets them to cold hammer iron, but since the smelters can't be used to create pig iron and steel, I'm at wit's end here. Oh well, the shitload of mithril will probably be better anyway. I suppose I should have asked the liaison to bring some bars from the mountainhomes, but he left before I could ask anyway.

At least hematite smelting advanced to the point that it doesn't need the coarse iron refining process anymore. That's... good I guess? Nevertheless, we have iron. That's a rock solid statement.

With all hope of steel lost, I ordered the smiths to forge equipment at least for Panopticon, our single soldier. He will have a mithril spear, round shield, breastplate, greaves, helmet, gauntlets and high boots. I don't have any illusions, that will certainly not be done by the end of the year, but I hope the next overseer will agree with me that it's pretty important to have our army in top-quality gear, considering these two circumstances:
- We can afford it
- The smiths don't have anything else to do really
- HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN HOLD A WEAPON HERE ARGH WE ARE SO DEAD

If/when this is done, the freshly smelted iron should be used to construct floodgates, as means of FINALLY filling that magma reservoir.

For the record: there was another kobold thief near the end of winter, but this one got away. as far as I can tell, he didn't grab anything. By the way, I sent out Panopticon to gut another pangolin instead. You MAY be able to stop that. If you want. If not, and you are a real monster, there's also a tapir nearby. Just saying.

Things I left unfinished:
- The entry bridge is NOT linked to any lever, so it is NOT retractable. Fix it ASAP, it slipped my mind somehow.
- SOMETHING should be done with our military. More precisely: our lack of one.
- Bars clutter our workshops, no metal/fuel storage is designated. There wasn't enough time for that.
- No bins. Not a single one.
- Alcohol situation is stable, but could be better.
- I don't have a clue where Smake's body is, so he's not buried. Also not memorialized, I didn't have time for another tomb after my fancy one.
- The graveyard is dug out (north of the refuse and corpse stockpiles), but no coffins there. Again, lack of time.
- Hematite and mithril vein partially explored, those should be waaay deeper, so explore at your leisure.
- There's a furnished, but unoccupied estate on the military level. I wanted that for myself, but I guess I don't have use for it in the afterlife. Finders keepers.
- The big room on that same level was supposed to be military training area, that's also unfininshed. I guess you could throw in an armor stand and call it a day, but please don't do that. Do something flambouyant with that room.
- The designated, but not mined room on the same level was to be an archery training room. No archers, so I abandoned that idea.
- There are non-magma metalworking facilities. Abandon these when you have access to magma, maybe go as far as removing them completely. I set a few orders on repeat here, don't forget those, or the dumb fuckers will burn through our coal supply - which should be used for steel in the long run, if we ever pull that off.
- There are bedrooms, but not enough now. A few of the residents are left without a proper room.
- The levers on the intended magmapool level are not connected to anything. They are intended for the floodgates, which, I can't stress this enough, SHOULD BE MAGMA SAFE or we all die.

Bug reporting time:

- Finishing forge: cold hammer x metal. Nice, but what for? And why is this a separate building from...
- Crucible: If this is the good old 1.9.x crucible, then there is a pretty serious problem with it: it needs three steel bars to construct. If this is the only way to smelt steel, then you have a nice catch 22 here.
- Iron ores: Magnetite, limonite is still there. The way I remember, it was reduced to hematite only in 1.9.x. Intended?
- Iron ores: Smelting iron is a one-step process, so smelting hematite gives iron instead of coarse iron, just like in vanilla. Intended?
- Marble looks fishy:

I highly doubt that it should look like that green... thing with the... cloud (?) inside it. Smoothed marble looks like, well, decent marble, all white and shit.
- Vanilla stones: microcline, orthoclase, sphalerite are the ones I encountered. I thought these were purged in the stone-simplifying crusade. If they stay for good, at least do something with their color, to prevent eye damage or something. (see above picture again)
- It was mentioned in the community fort earlier: holy-shit-sized veins of mithril and anthracite (also, compact peat). Not entire levels, but in some cases, almost. Even if this was kind of intended, I don't think it was intended on this scale, as these went waaaay overboard, I had ~500 coal in the first year.
- Known issue, just reminder: mithril forge doesn't need a blueprint now. This is a HILARIOUSLY HUGE source of power for dwarvenkind.

Since there are two threads now, and the other is a chaotic mess, and my name was mentioned here, I decided to post this in this one.

You think so? The army of two in the succession fort was enought to butcher any invasion. Not really balanced I'd say. :P

Not true, MINE was never a legion dwarf, I just boosted him with a megabeast essence to legendary sworddwarf, and that's it. That let him live through a shitload of battles, and his other skills kind of caught up after a while.
But, yeah, I guess you are kind of right, Darkhawk from the succession fort is kind of a strong case for some much needed balancing.

I should not have doubted my commander. It went quite smoothly: first, it was a small group of axemen, led by a master lasher - their captain was the only dangerous one, and by the time we went down to meet the enemy on the field, he was already trapped in a cage, along with two of his men. The fight was pretty one-sided, but I had a chance to really see the legends in action for the first time.

Captain Silus went to battle without his armor, and even without his weapon. He only carried his trusty shield. Sir tells me this is something of a custom to him, he did something similar against a whole siege of dark stanglers in Shadytorments. However, he did that one alone, so going into THIS battle without proper equipment was a cakewalk for him.
Freya is a beast. A fucking beast, I tell you. I never saw her actually use that battleaxe of hers outside the training room, and boy, am I glad that she's on our side. She claims that her skills have rusted a bit, but judging from this battle, you wouldn't know. She just went ahead, chopping limbs with every strike, effortlessly deflecting the few blows that came towards her. She seemed invincible.
The commander is every bit the warrior he's supposed to be. He swings that mithril greatsword like there's no tomorrow, and he didn't even seem to get tired from it. He made the whole fight look like a warmup, which it totally was, compared to what was to come.

We did another round of this, not taking a single scratch, but for the third time, the tigermen wised up. They sent forward their sauropods, holding the bridge down with their enormous weight. This was a problem: we could not separate chunks of the army anymore. Almost half of their initial force was immobilized or killed at this point, and they still outnumbered us four to one. Good odds for any dwarf!

I don't remember much from this fight. A couple of guys collapsed, either from wounds or exhaustion, body parts flew everywhere (mostly tigermen heads), but I do remember some turning points.
First off, Silus' spartans are incredible. Since the Metal Lady outfitted them with mithril spears, they seem unstoppable. There were only four of them, but they were the best four we had out there by far. Silus trained the True Phalanx incredibly well. Unfortunately, they overextended themselves a bit, and Silus herself got hurt pretty bad. Soon, his two new recruits passed out from exhaustion, only Greenhorn stood his ground until the very end.
Panopticon was also surprisingly effective through the whole thing, I reckon he broke quite a few bones with his warhammer.
To sum it up, we were kicking some serious ass. I personally killed four of them, and wounded many more, before a sauropod got me. It messed up my arm really bad, and I must have passed out, because when I came to, there were mutilated bodies everywhere, and the battle was over.

As the others told me, the tigermen broke their charge after the losses on their side became astronomical, and wanted to flee. The commander would have none of it: he gave the command to raise the drawbridge, trapping the remaining enemies near the trade depot. It was brutal. All of them were quickly slain, except their leader, a master lasher. They say that one put up a hell of a fight, it took Sir and Freya everything they had to defeat that one together. Wow. That must have been something, it's a shame I was taking a nap when it happened. Finally, Freya tackled the guy into the moat, and the bastard bled out down there.

Either way, the battle is over, the day is won. We have quite a number of injured dwarfs, but no casualties. The gates remain locked however: among the real fighters, only Freya is standing, and Greenhorn will probably be all right after a little rest - he doesn't have any real wounds, he's just completely exhausted.
The other three spartans had it way worse, all of them have multiple broken and fractured bones, it will take a while for them to get back on their feet, even Silus. Sir and myself aren't better off either. Even though the commander insisted that he is 'fine', he couldn't exactly hide his broken right arm. Doc might have let him off with his various bruises (and he has plenty), but he wants to keep Sir inside at least he can use his arm again.
This situation may be bad, since autumn is very near, and we may find ourselves without water again.

(I didn't make this up: different world, different dwarf, different fortress, even a completely different version of the game, and the dwarf called Silus pulls the same shit as she did in the original fort: going into battle completely naked and unarmed, save for her shield.)

This makes me rethink my strategy a bit, so I'm buying an additional gladiator from that 200 I won. His character sheet:

Name: 'Sir' (real name unknown)
Traits:
STR: 12 (11+1)
END: 6
AGI: 5 (6-1)
INT: 2
Backstory:
He claims to be the former militia commander of a fallen fortress. Seems like a capable fellow, though his leadership years are long-long past... If he ever was a formidable warrior and military officer, he is just a shadow of himself now.
Class: Warrior
Weapon: Starter Sword (two-handed)
Equipment: none, yet.

What happens if I lose? I just don't get the gold, or are the fallen fighters permanently dead, or forced to rest, or what? Either way, I wish to fight one direwolf for now. I hope that should be relatively easy with two fighters now, but it could also earn a bit of gold. Preferred strategy: Ishar charges in first, hopes to not die, and when the dire wolf is occupied with him, Sir joins in for  killing blows.

Oh and by the way, the name's Ishar, without the 't'.

And a word of advice, while a hydraleather armor is great for protecting your torso, it won't defebd your legs. It's hard to dodge on wounded legs.

Yeah I know, that would be the next piece of equipment I intend to buy, but I figured torso protection is more important. I'm also confident in the 10 agility, which is 14 because of the hydra leather. That should be enough to keep me alive until one of those two-handed blows with a strength of 10 finally connects and does some real damage.

Legion dwarves will be rarer and not quite as awesome

This part is sad.

Autumn, 301
We hit a major problem building our magmapit to fuel the metalworking industry: this would definitely need magma-safe floodgates. We have none, as the stones around us are mostly schist, orthoclase and useless things like that.

I'm also dead somehow. The fuck, when did that happen? Oh well, in my brief time here in the afterlife, I guess I should reflect on my mistakes. Think about humility. About our limits in this world.

OR i could order my comrades to build a giant fucking yellow wall to intimidate our enemies. Yeah, that sounds more like me. Unfortunately, magma is still a no-go, but I set up a few smelters, so we can make use of that ridiculous amount of mithril we found. Well, not me obviously, but them. The others. You know, the ones who are not dead.

Somehow, this 'dying' thing threw me off a bit. I'm actually kind of a nice overseer now. Everybody has his/her own room, we are not starving, walls are mostly built, we have a nice dining room, and we will have a bookmaker, broken and mayor soon, with all due quarters. I don't know how this is all possible, but making every inhabitant do masonry and mining certainly helped. Okay, maybe the fact that they didn't have to build a big-ass palace for me also helped a bit. That reminds me: my body is still not buried. I guess a decent tomb with some mithril statues would look nice...

The dwarf traders came today, followed by two kobold thiefs, those was put in their place by Panopticon. Who also could be called the military of Demonictower, since NOT A SINGLE ONE of the others is drafted. At all.
Anyway, fortunately they were carrying fungiwood spores, quarry bush seeds and FINALLY some plump helmets. You don1t know how much you like them until you don't have them. So, we started carving out the underground farming area when winter arrived.

(Bollocks. My dwarf was out there, removing ramps, and the shithead trapped himself. I didn't notice until it was too late... so, way ahead of you Panopticon: how are going to kill me if I'm already dead? WHAT'S DEAD MAY NEVER DIE.)

225
Nah. No warbeast (save dragons) are a real threat to a decently equipped dwarf. Steel (or similar) armor protects from most of their attacks, and masterwork mithril weapons easily lop off limbs or heads. That holds true even with sauropods. Sentients and their weapons are much-much dangerous, hammermen usually get in some bone-crushing hits regularly, and enemy spearmen pierce organs - if unlucky, skulls.
