DF Gameplay Questions / Bug or just my system sucking?
« on: April 15, 2012, 11:29:44 pm »
Anyone else have a problem with DF freezing up halfway through the last step of worldgen?  It's something like "Finding Sites" or sommat.  Anyway, two worlds in a row, completely locks up my system.

OK, I've tried a couple of different repeaters and I failed at both of them.

First off is the classic mist generator, with 4 pumps in a square above my fort entrance.  I hooked it to a set of water wheels (not a DWR, just some WWs) with plenty of power, and it completely failed.  The water got one pump away from the initial spot and spilled all over the place, and didn't stay around for the mist to generate.

Then I tried AncientEnemy's four tile repeater, (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Repeater) which worked in 40d evidently...does it not work in 2010?  I couldn't build a drawbridge, only a retracting bridge, and I don't think that functions for this particular repeater.  Is something wrong with the way I'm doing things?  Or have bridges changed since d40?

DF Gameplay Questions / Site finder issue (resolved)
« on: April 02, 2011, 12:25:47 am »
I just regenerated after having my fortress wiped by trolls and goblins, and I ran the site finder with the following criteria:

Flux Stone: YES

(the rest of it is irrelevant)

I found a site that said "SHALLOW METALS, DEEP METALS, FLUX STONE".  So I embark there.  Then I run dfprospector to see if I have the makings of steel.  End result:  NO FLUX STONE!  NONE WHATSOEVER!

Anyone else having this issue?

DF Gameplay Questions / Strange Mood: I need BODY PARTS!
« on: March 31, 2011, 12:30:29 am »
It's a "Fey" mood, not a Macabre, and the little kid is asking for body parts.  The wiki says Bones, Skull, Horn, or Ivory.  I have just butchered some cats and a yak, so I have bones, skulls, and horns...and NO IVORY.  Is there a way to generate Ivory other than elephants (of which I have exactly zero on my map)?  I believe I am DOOOMED, this punk kid (Dwarven Child who has taken over my craftsdwarf shop) is gonna go berzerk and start a tantrum spiral, I JUST KNOW IT.

Of course, it might help if I start mining metal and make armor and weapons, but all I got is copper right now!  Maybe I should dig down to the magma, build a pumpstack (or piston) and start mining copper.

DF Gameplay Questions / Sock takes 10000 cloth?
« on: March 22, 2011, 09:17:25 pm »
Urist McClothesmaker cancels make cloth sock: needs 10000 plant cloth.

That seems like a...little much for a sock...Now, I figure that's for the HUGE ORDER of socks I placed in my jobs manager.  But is it a bug in the display or the a bug in the actual need for using 10K cloth to make a sock?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Failing to Dump
« on: March 22, 2011, 12:30:14 am »
For some reason, I have some stones on the stairway to the bedrooms marked for dumping, but the dwarves completely ignore them.  Anyone have any clues why that might be?

Things I've thought of:

No path to items.  Invalid because there are dwarves sleeping within sight of the stones.
Forbidden items.  Invalid because, well, they're not forbidden, I checked.
They're outside.  Invalid because they're underground, dark.

I'm sure it's something stupid, but I can't figure it out.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Artifact Recursiveness
« on: March 13, 2011, 09:31:36 pm »
First off, I don't know what a braies is.  Second:

Rakustkamuk "Tombpriest", a yak leather braies

This is a yak leather braies.  All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality.  This object menaces with spikes of yak leather.  On the item is an image of Tombpriest the yak leather braies in alder.

He made a braies with a picture of itself on it.  So, does THAT image have an image of the image?  And does THAT image ... you get the idea.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Overconfidence in a nutshell
« on: March 02, 2011, 02:11:25 am »
This may be a 'facepalm' moment.

Haven't played DF in a while, picked up 31.19 to get back into it.  Load my usual setup, modified to include a doctor.  Mine out a space to put my food stockpiles in so they don't rot, then start putzing around with other stuff, but no military or defense.  Went on like this for about a year, and then the dwarves started hunting vermin.  Oops, forgot to set up farming.  Do a quick farm set-up using floor hatches from above and a drainage ditch, get farming working, get my dwarves up to like 1000 food, 1000 booze after another year or two.  Notice I still haven't bothered to do military.  I say to myself, "Self, you haven't set up a military...but you also haven't seen any snatchers or thieves.  Well, whatever."  Self still does not bother setting up military.

And then the seige comes.

I draft 21 random dwarves (since I still don't quite get the DF2010 military system, despite reading the wiki), send them against the seige, and hope that it's enough.  Well, 4 dwarves die, 6 go to hospital and eventually recover, and the seige is broken.  Hot damn, I say!  And then I return to my normally scheduled ignoring of the military system.  Break through to the first cavern, pit a llama baby to do some exploring for me (he's wandering around with red injuries coz pitting him led to a 9 z-layer fall).  Start doing the dining room and offices for nobles, and...AMBUSH...I say to myself again, "Self, this time, let's figure out what we're doing!"  So, I pause the game, use Dwarf Therapist to figure out who has essential skills and who can go in the military, set up custom professions, then assign them all to squads, then assign the squads to go kill the goblins.  You can predict what happens next.  I sent 3 squads of 9 out to meet the goblins.  They came back with 1 or 2 in each squad...or should I say, those guys were probably eating and didn't even go out.  Tantrums started erupting.  I hadn't set up burrows to keep the civvies indoors, so they were all pathing out to get the dead bodies and dropped crap, and getting killed by goblins.

Another fortress killed by overconfidence and laziness.

I don't like how rare metals are in 31.19.  I had plenty of wood to smelt metal and make stuff out of it, but no ore to do so with.  Oh, I could have bought it, but where's the fun in that?

Anyway, I'll try again, I'm sure.  And this time, I'll build farms and a military infrastructure much sooner.

DF Gameplay Questions / Possible bug, need verification before posting
« on: March 02, 2011, 01:34:09 am »
My dwarfs aren't hauling food from the farms to the food stockpiles.  The following things are true:

1>  There are idle dwarves (27 of them, in fact), all of whom have hauling enabled according to Dwarf Therapist, none of whom are soldiers.
2>  There are plump helmets in the farms (I see about 20 of them right now).
3>  There is a path available from meeting zone (entry to fortress) to farms.
4>  There is a path available from farms to food stockpile (which is basically adjacent to the farms)
5>  There is room in the food stockpile (I have a total 175 stockpile tiles, of which about half have stuff in them).

This is in a stock install fortress in 31.19.

My question:  Should I submit this as a bug or am I missing something?

DF Gameplay Questions / Getting rid of goblin loot
« on: January 29, 2009, 01:44:08 am »
Thanks to the 'my wrestlers are invincible' speed-stat-boost, I now have a squad of like 15 Legendary Wrestlers.  The effect of this is to eliminate any danger from Goblin incursions (no sieges yet, but ambushes of 4 squads of 6 have led to in general one dead dwarf and 24 dead goblins).  The downside of that is, I end up with TONS AND TONS of narrow leather items that I can't melt or reuse.  I use many of them for trade, but I still have THOUSANDS of items (I don't think I exaggerate, either) that I can't get rid of.

How do YOU deal with that?

The metal items get marked to be melted into useful bars, but even with three magma smelters running continuously, I can't keep up with that either.  I suppose I could run even MORE smelters for that part.  But the leather and cloth items just keep piling up!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / PTSD for dwarves?
« on: January 19, 2009, 12:21:30 am »
I had a minor goblin invasion, which I defeated through basically pure luck (as I'm not that good at defensive setups yet).  One of my guys is dying from red wounds in heart and both lungs.  But he keeps trying to rest, but keeps failing to do so because 'Interrupted by Goblin Wrestler'...which is in a cage nowhere near him.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anyone?

If that's what's actually happening (whether by accident or really), that is totally cool.

DF Gameplay Questions / Pumps and throughput
« on: January 18, 2009, 01:15:40 am »
A challenge I have set myself is to have a waterfall in my dining room.  OK, a challenge I FAILED at several times.  I do not have an above ground brook/river, but I have found my underground river.  I pump water up from z-8 to z+1 (z=0 is the dining room level) with 6 pumps per floor.  You may sense where this is going already.

I've flooded my dining room three times.  Obviously 6 is too many pumps per floor.  I have a one tile channel built above the dining room (z+1), a 9 tile square of channels all the way back down to the river from z+0 to z-8, and it still backs up.

Has anyone done this, and if so, what was your setup?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Prospecting
« on: November 06, 2007, 01:09:00 pm »
I'm looking for coal.  I know it's here, somewhere (using a seed from the website that says there is coal).  Other than random test drills, what process do you use to prospect for any given material?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Chasm monsters
« on: September 27, 2007, 12:29:00 pm »
I decided to genocide my chasm creatures.  I have plenty of bones from goblins, so bone bolts aren't an issue (yet?).  So I dug out all the minerals that would be rendered inaccessible, put a wide ledge at the end of my lava channel, so that the lava would spread and spill into the chasm all along that width (which it did), set up 4 rows of traps from the chasm into my fortress, moved my military to just behind the traps, and opened the floodgate to let the lava out.

End result:

Many bored dwarves and a smoking chasm.  That's right, no attacks came from the chasm.  Quite a disappointment, after all the work I went through to set it up.  Now my chasm has the red line down the middle, and I'm preparing for the Demons, which will no doubt destroy my entire fortress, either through !!Burning Mitten!! or out and out rampaging.
