DF Gameplay Questions / Nobles claiming stuff
« on: October 18, 2007, 01:32:00 pm »
My nobles' rooms are disaster areas.  No, not because of tantrums.  Because they decided to claim a bunch of crap that they have no use for.  I'm thinking the easiest way to clean out those rooms (and reclaim the narrow iron chainmail shirts I want to melt) is to un-assign the rooms and let the haulers clean it out prior to re-assigning it.

Is there a way for them NOT to claim all that crap?

DF Gameplay Questions / Not a bad thing, but...
« on: October 05, 2007, 04:29:00 pm »
Has anyone had this happen to them:

I got a baroness and her lovely consort, along with a bunch of other nobles, including a hammerer.  So, I set about building their rooms for them, including the hammerer.  In the middle of doing so, I was besieged by goblins.  When my traps broke the siege (still a relative newbie, after all), I discovered that my hammerer had died.  So sad (*snort*)...but he hasn't been replaced, and it's been a couple of years, and a couple of sieges since then.

DF Gameplay Questions / bedroom construction
« on: October 03, 2007, 11:55:00 pm »
So, this is mostly just a 'hmmm...' kind of post.

I read in the wiki lots of situations where it indicates that basically the writer  even early in the game has lots of cabinets and chests/coffers and beds to build bedrooms for non-noble dwarves pretty much at their beck and call.  I'm in year 1062 or so, and I still have a good 30 or 40 cabinets and over 100 chests to go to fill up the rooms I'm renting to my over 150 dwarves.  Am I not producing at full capacity?  I know that my haulers are busy as heck, after the multitude of goblin sieges has left my front door a three-screens-of-crap-per-square mess, but I am still producing stuff.

DF Gameplay Questions / economy questions
« on: September 22, 2007, 09:40:00 pm »
I've scanned the Wiki for information on this, and haven't found enough information on this.

I just had the economy start (my first time, obviously).  Some of my dwarves (maybe 20 or so?) did not have rooms assigned.  Do I have to assign rooms to rent them, or de-assign them from a specific dwarf and then let the dwarves figure out what they can afford?  I can't assign a good portion of my 145 dwarves to rooms, I can only tag about 30 of them, at least half nobles.

Basically, my point is, I'm going to figure this out with your help, and submit it to the Wiki so other people have an idea about it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Flood waves
« on: September 11, 2007, 08:23:00 pm »
I looked on the Wiki on how to stop a flood wave (not a permaflood, I generated an antiflood event quick enough not to permaflood, but I have water washing back and forth in my fortress), but didn't find anything.

Any tips?  I've locked the doors which I thought would stop the water, but it just bounces.  It goes out to my outside channels, and bounces.

DF Gameplay Questions / Miners dropping picks
« on: September 06, 2007, 01:27:00 pm »
I have some 10 miners, ALL of whom decided to drop their picks at the same time and not mine.  How do I get them to retrieve their picks and get back to work?

I've looked at the wiki, Savok, and also did a search on this board.

Some information (with one possible explanation, but no way to resolve that explanation):

I had assigned everyone who wasn't a carpenter to carry a crossbow.  I figure now that the miners are carrying crossbows with only one weapon slot allowed, they're carrying only the crossbow, not the pick.  So, I put them on unarmed...Nary a one of them grabbed a pick.  And pick is not an option in the weapons list.

Other thoughts include the House Ber representative stepping outside of his farming bounds and telling the miners to stop work because his bedroom isn't built yet (unlikely:  Ber is farming as per the Wiki, and I think there would be punishment handed down for not building the bedroom, and there isn't).

Anyone else have tips?

DF Gameplay Questions / Uninjured dwarf who goes unconscious
« on: September 05, 2007, 12:53:00 pm »
So, I have this craftsdwarf who was in a fight in my first year.  She's now completely healed (as far as I can tell) - no red, yellow or even light grey injuries on her Wnd screen - but very often goes unconscious when engaged in any task that involves, oh, moving more than one square.  For instance, on a 50 distance trip to install a door, she passed out about 15 squares after picking up the door.  She has no status indicators on his Wnd page, is ecstatic on her happiness page, has had enough sleep (I see 'has slept in a good bedroom lately'), I have booze (no booze complaint in her file).

What can I do about this?  How can I stop her from knocking herself out by doing work?

DF Bug Reports / wierd cooking thing
« on: August 23, 2007, 01:54:00 pm »
I have a new fortress, and I've managed to gather enough plant material to brew some longland beer, which I tagged cookable.  Some of it was cooked, but then when I try to cook the remainder (of which it says I have 15 or so), it says 'needs 2 unrotten cookable items.'  [Edited to add:]  I also have some raw cave fish that could be cooked (about 10 total), and they're not getting counted either.

Any thoughts?

[Edit 2:  I abandoned the fortress, I was too frustrated, and it was early in the life cycle so I didn't lose much.

DF Bug Reports / demands not met not causing agony
« on: November 16, 2007, 01:34:00 pm »
OK, my dungeon master is demanding an electrum chest in his bedroom.  That's fine, he's electrum dood.  Except I have no gold, so I can't make electrum.  So, failed production order, followed by punishment, right?  Nope.

Weird stuff.

DF Bug Reports / Dwarf overlap
« on: November 13, 2007, 12:45:00 pm »
I have a 6 wide hallway in a 'U' shape for defensive purposes, and my dwarves don't bother to go around the other dwarves in their way, they just go under or over other dwarves or pets or etc.

It's designated 'high traffic'.

DF Bug Reports / dogs assigned to dead people
« on: November 26, 2007, 12:13:00 pm »
I did a search and didn't find anything about this.  I had a Peasant get a strange mood and desire glass, which I couldn't provide, not having sand.  So, knowing the mood would fail, I assigned some war dogs to him in case he went berzerk.  I figure, once he dies, the dogs are free and clear, I can reassign them.  No such luck.  The guy is dead, the dogs are still assigned to him.  And there has never been an unassign function for dogs, not that I can 'v' up on the guy anyway.

DF Bug Reports / dragon fell in the magma
« on: December 18, 2007, 11:24:00 pm »
I was dreading my first Uber creature arrival message, because I have never had to deal with one before.  So, when I received a notice that a dragon showed up as an uninvited guest, I was a wee bit miffed.  I ordered all my dwarves inside, expecting them to ignore it.  I reactivated my military (that I had JUST stood down to get some R&R), and positioned them where they would group up and get killed by the first blast of fire, and waited.  Thinking I should check to make sure the Dragon is coming my way, I zoomed to it, and discovered it inside the magma vent.  Oh crap, it's going to come up the magma channel, I ...wait...I see smoke.  I see..burning dragon.  I see...dead dragon.

That's right, the fire breathing beast with a thousand names fell in the magma and killed itself.  My dwarves didn't even have a chance to wet their pants before they were turned into crispy critters.  I don't know if this is a bug, that a fire breathing creature can burn to death in magma.  I do know that if it's NOT a bug, the dragon's pathfinding AI is, uh, broken.

EDIT:  This is in 33f, vanilla (I use a different font and a different graphics set, but I don't consider those mods).

DF Bug Reports / 33d: door didn't get unbuilt
« on: December 14, 2007, 12:21:00 am »
I built a little enclosure out in my outdoors to hold my tame animals instead of having them rumble around the entire fort.  This didn't work for a variety of reasons, so I tagged the walls for deconstruction, and they were deconstructed.  The door that I had put in so I could put the animals in did NOT deconstruct when the walls came down.  I had to 'x' it out manually.  This was a door outside.

DF Bug Reports / Leadr? (33d)
« on: December 13, 2007, 01:47:00 pm »
When you have a queen, the 'z' summary screen says 'Leadr' instead of 'Leader'.  Minor typo, I'm guessing.

DF Bug Reports / military with thumbs up ass (33d)
« on: December 13, 2007, 01:02:00 pm »
OK, I found the demon pits (first time ever).  I built a wall around the channel I used to dig into the pits:

code:

......................
......................
....++++++++++........
....+--------+........
....++++++++++........
......................
......................

. Floor
+ Carved Fortification Wall
- Channel to the PITS OF HECK

I've station my 7 dwarf military squad right near there so they can pick off any demons that happen by...and sure enough, a demon happened by.

And now my military won't do anything.  They shot all their bolts at the demon, then got some more bolts and returned to the scene, but they're not accepting station orders (I'm trying to station them near the demon), they're not accepting the fact that they are standing down (in order to go get more bolts or drink as they all suddenly get the 'thirsty' icon) or on duty, they're just stuck near the demon wall.  They have a path in and out.  EDIT:  None of them are wounded (although the demon did try to throw fire at one point). EDIT 2:  I totally deactivated them, they started shooting at the demon until they were out of bolts again, then walked off to do their jobs.

Anyone have any ideas?
