Is there a way for them NOT to claim all that crap?
I got a baroness and her lovely consort, along with a bunch of other nobles, including a hammerer. So, I set about building their rooms for them, including the hammerer. In the middle of doing so, I was besieged by goblins. When my traps broke the siege (still a relative newbie, after all), I discovered that my hammerer had died. So sad (*snort*)...but he hasn't been replaced, and it's been a couple of years, and a couple of sieges since then.
I read in the wiki lots of situations where it indicates that basically the writer even early in the game has lots of cabinets and chests/coffers and beds to build bedrooms for non-noble dwarves pretty much at their beck and call. I'm in year 1062 or so, and I still have a good 30 or 40 cabinets and over 100 chests to go to fill up the rooms I'm renting to my over 150 dwarves. Am I not producing at full capacity? I know that my haulers are busy as heck, after the multitude of goblin sieges has left my front door a three-screens-of-crap-per-square mess, but I am still producing stuff.
I just had the economy start (my first time, obviously). Some of my dwarves (maybe 20 or so?) did not have rooms assigned. Do I have to assign rooms to rent them, or de-assign them from a specific dwarf and then let the dwarves figure out what they can afford? I can't assign a good portion of my 145 dwarves to rooms, I can only tag about 30 of them, at least half nobles.
Basically, my point is, I'm going to figure this out with your help, and submit it to the Wiki so other people have an idea about it.
Any tips? I've locked the doors which I thought would stop the water, but it just bounces. It goes out to my outside channels, and bounces.
I've looked at the wiki, Savok, and also did a search on this board.
Some information (with one possible explanation, but no way to resolve that explanation):
I had assigned everyone who wasn't a carpenter to carry a crossbow. I figure now that the miners are carrying crossbows with only one weapon slot allowed, they're carrying only the crossbow, not the pick. So, I put them on unarmed...Nary a one of them grabbed a pick. And pick is not an option in the weapons list.
Other thoughts include the House Ber representative stepping outside of his farming bounds and telling the miners to stop work because his bedroom isn't built yet (unlikely: Ber is farming as per the Wiki, and I think there would be punishment handed down for not building the bedroom, and there isn't).
Anyone else have tips?
What can I do about this? How can I stop her from knocking herself out by doing work?
Any thoughts?
[Edit 2: I abandoned the fortress, I was too frustrated, and it was early in the life cycle so I didn't lose much.

Weird stuff.
It's designated 'high traffic'.
That's right, the fire breathing beast with a thousand names fell in the magma and killed itself. My dwarves didn't even have a chance to wet their pants before they were turned into crispy critters. I don't know if this is a bug, that a fire breathing creature can burn to death in magma. I do know that if it's NOT a bug, the dragon's pathfinding AI is, uh, broken.
EDIT: This is in 33f, vanilla (I use a different font and a different graphics set, but I don't consider those mods).

I've station my 7 dwarf military squad right near there so they can pick off any demons that happen by...and sure enough, a demon happened by.
And now my military won't do anything. They shot all their bolts at the demon, then got some more bolts and returned to the scene, but they're not accepting station orders (I'm trying to station them near the demon), they're not accepting the fact that they are standing down (in order to go get more bolts or drink as they all suddenly get the 'thirsty' icon) or on duty, they're just stuck near the demon wall. They have a path in and out. EDIT: None of them are wounded (although the demon did try to throw fire at one point). EDIT 2: I totally deactivated them, they started shooting at the demon until they were out of bolts again, then walked off to do their jobs.
Anyone have any ideas?
