Note to self:  linking the pressure plate while the floodgate is open from another lever breaks the repeater.  I think.  Testing.  Maybe I had the pressure plate set wrong.

Will try that out while the kids are at piano lesson.  Thanks.

Yep, that makes perfect sense...Except I can't build the raising bridge, because of this error message.  It won't let me build the raising bridge...Do I need to dig out a square adjacent to the bridge even though it's a 1 tile bridge?

19
I am not channelling anything where the bridge is.  I have channelled down to the same layer as the 7/7 water of the brook and dug a 5 tile path for the repeater.  The bridge would be on a mined not channelled tile.

That's what I'm thinking.  As I understand it, we have the following:  Unlimited water (brook/river/aquifer), floodgate, bridge, plate, floodgate.  When I try to place the bridge (haven't dug to the water yet), I get the following message:

Needs to be anchored on edge.

This is for a raising bridge.  If a retracting bridge is sufficient, well, then, nevermind, because retracting bridges can be built there.

OK, I've tried a couple of different repeaters and I failed at both of them.

First off is the classic mist generator, with 4 pumps in a square above my fort entrance.  I hooked it to a set of water wheels (not a DWR, just some WWs) with plenty of power, and it completely failed.  The water got one pump away from the initial spot and spilled all over the place, and didn't stay around for the mist to generate.

Then I tried AncientEnemy's four tile repeater, (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Repeater) which worked in 40d evidently...does it not work in 2010?  I couldn't build a drawbridge, only a retracting bridge, and I don't think that functions for this particular repeater.  Is something wrong with the way I'm doing things?  Or have bridges changed since d40?

A waterfall with all parts made out of gold that dumps water onto your front entrance.

I'll let you work that one out.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Good Regions and Flux
« on: April 05, 2011, 01:27:36 pm »
Dfprospector doesn't show flux by default.  Run it with the command line parameter -ab and it will show you if there is flux.  I thought the same as you until I did this.  The reason for this is that dfpropector doesn't show layer stones, and most (all?) flux stones are layer stones.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Site finder stinks!

I know which are flux stones, that was DEFINITELY not the problem.  It does appear that the -ab command flag to dfprospector was the issue.

So, I take back my statement that it stinks!  Let's see if I can edit the subject line of the topic...

DF Gameplay Questions / Site finder issue (resolved)
« on: April 02, 2011, 12:25:47 am »
I just regenerated after having my fortress wiped by trolls and goblins, and I ran the site finder with the following criteria:

Flux Stone: YES

(the rest of it is irrelevant)

I found a site that said "SHALLOW METALS, DEEP METALS, FLUX STONE".  So I embark there.  Then I run dfprospector to see if I have the makings of steel.  End result:  NO FLUX STONE!  NONE WHATSOEVER!

Anyone else having this issue?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: April 02, 2011, 12:01:53 am »
Siege!  Quick, close the front bridge!  Oh crap, middle of the three bridges is not linked, quick, deconstruct it!  Whew, made it in time.  Siegers gave up and left, but not before a couple trolls got in.  Thankfully, at the cost of about 5 to 8 dwarves, they were defeated.  A lot of my front gate was destroyed by their buddies, but nothing I can't replace.  Let's start cleaning u-SIEGE!  Pull the bridge shut again!  WAIT THE MIDDLE BRIDGE STILL ISN'T LINKED THEY'RE GETTING IN, HELP HELP I AAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaa......

You have succumbed to the invasion.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What An Odd Item

Teeth like that can be used in strange moods that require ivory...theoretically.  I've only had one guy go insane from not having ivory, and teeth was the only thing I didn't have in the list (or perhaps shells, but I didn't get a chance to test that)

I don't know if I have shell.  I'll take a look tonight.  May be too late, the dwarf has been moody for almost a full season.

DF Gameplay Questions / Strange Mood: I need BODY PARTS!
« on: March 31, 2011, 12:30:29 am »
It's a "Fey" mood, not a Macabre, and the little kid is asking for body parts.  The wiki says Bones, Skull, Horn, or Ivory.  I have just butchered some cats and a yak, so I have bones, skulls, and horns...and NO IVORY.  Is there a way to generate Ivory other than elephants (of which I have exactly zero on my map)?  I believe I am DOOOMED, this punk kid (Dwarven Child who has taken over my craftsdwarf shop) is gonna go berzerk and start a tantrum spiral, I JUST KNOW IT.

Of course, it might help if I start mining metal and make armor and weapons, but all I got is copper right now!  Maybe I should dig down to the magma, build a pumpstack (or piston) and start mining copper.
