Surprisingly enough, Keas. My hunter did his best to protect my starting fort, and he was nearly killed by them... talk about angry birds.
Same.  Divebombed the heck out of my construction crew and farm animals.

Interesting coincidence, I went to the zoo the day before yesterday, saw a Kea up close in the tropical birds aviary-house-thing.

Pretty bird.  Looks like a parrot.  But I was on to it's tricks.  It was a tense situation.

Oh wow.  And it addresses a few other issues I've run into.
On to the next version!

Partial correction...?
The above armor combo needs a proper upper-body clothing item, else you have my experience...
A Champion in a tantrum.  Hammerer soon to follow.

Thus it appears that only 2 mail shirts(instead of 3) are called for, in order to equip one Leather Dress, the best(?) torso Under item commonly available that would alleviate happiness needs.

Now I un-pause my game and hope-hope-hope that this is a short tantrum, because otherwise this fortress is done.

*Though this could just be an issue with equipping the AI deciding to actually equip what's listed?  I don't know...

DF Gameplay Questions / Population grows too quickly?
« on: June 05, 2012, 03:11:06 am »
Since starting my current fortress, I've been treading water the whole time.  Each facet of needs and infrastructure take time and dedicated attention on pause, and time to play out.  You can multi-task these items, but that can get messy, and it's sorta taxing depending on what you're doing.  This would all be manageable, and even fun(classic definition), except that despite my skill at the game so far, the care, and the foresight I try to use, I feel that I'm taking on water faster than I can bail it out of the boat.  Or more accurately, I'm gaining migrants and babies faster than I can accommodate them + pre-existing needs.

Meanwhile, I check the wiki for some infos, and come across an interesting entry: Sheriff.  Hey, look at that, it's possible to have a simple law-enforcement mechanism for the early game.  Neat.  But assigning someone that role, let alone addressing justice and order at all, went immediately by the wayside as I focused on more critical needs, like gaining access to safe water, basic fortification, industry establishment, and keeping nobles happy.  Fast forward a day's play, and there's no sheriff on my nobles screen; below Baron is the Captain of the Guard.

I describe this because I think it's emblematic of something unfortunate, where the "early-game" phase flashes away quite quickly.  Instead of a steady progression, where I have an opportunity to sit back for a couple minutes and just let the dwarves run their business before getting the next wave of migrants and chaos, I go from 7 dwarves to 250 before I feel I can deal with a siege, let alone their clothing needs.  I feel like I'm missing out on an entire phase of the game.

I want to know if this is just a 'problem' with how I run a fortress(too perfectionistic, perhaps?  Create too much wealth?), or if others are having this experience?

Next time around, I'm gonna look for ways of extending the early game... Thoughts on courting that goal would also be welcome.

It's accomplished by designating a carved track on a pre-existing ramp.
Or building on it?  I've only ever had to carve them though.

I hadn't thought of that.  If it recurs, I'll have a log for you.

Ah, I didn't think it was up to date.  Alrighty then.  ;)
Then optimal melee armor combo, worn without civilian clothes(?), according to the wiki:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hm...
But here's a more specific question:
I have a small crew led by my Captain of the Guard/Sheriff.  They'll be law enforcement in good times and marksdwarves in Fun times.

Given their role is going to be to occasionally wade into a tantrum(or does only the Captain do that?) to subdue criminals, but will avoid melee in a siege, how do you think he/they ought to be equipped?

And while we're at it, I wonder how they ought to be trained?  Though that's off topic, I suppose.

Eh, I'm not sure a small update to their thoughts is going to be significant; even if they care a bit less, they're still naked.  I still need to make 2500 pieces of clothing for an unmodded DF game, and be able to store the duplicates long enough to pawn them off or use an item-destroying exploit.  5000+ articles of clothing, excluding armor!  Not even sure I've made that many blocks yet.

Changing the init would do the trick, I'm sure.  But I don't want to do that on this fort.

How do others deal with this interaction?

Hm.  I never ran into this problem before.  Am I alone in being shocked at the implications here?

Migrants come pretty quickly - with babies, and soon to have em if not - in non-small numbers.  I have a batch of births at the beginning of the season.  Migrants continue to come despite having passed 250 population before I can even build a military, as I'm busy treading water with the infrastructure.  Every one of my dwarves, children or no, need to have a new set of clothes made, since it sure as heck aint need-before-greed here...  8-10 items per dwarf.  2500 articles of clothing need to made by the player, and over time replaced.  That's 75-85 entries of maxed queues in the job manager.  Or 10 clothesmaker sweatshops held on repeat for... how long?

I don't get it.  How am I supposed to keep up with that on top of everything else?  And why have I never had to worry about this in the past?  ..Granted, last time I played was over a year ago...
Am I missing something here, or incorrectly attributing?

Agreed, but...  How should one be outfitting their military, for now?

Talk about lack of consensus...   :o

After going through my bins one by one, I'm seeing lots of x(clothes)x.  So I guess I interpret that to mean that the new clothes are getting snagged as soon as they're produced.  Does this also mean that dwarves wont take the x(clothes)x ?

And its looking like I'm gonna have to organize my storage, too...

*Edit - I just realized I put this in the wrong section.  Sorry  =(
Would like to get this moved, or perhaps just some insight in how to handle this continuing problem.  24-30 kids dead so far!

I'm not sure...
But, for example, I have 800 footwear items, spread across 235 dwarves or less.  I've got about 110 children of varied ages.
In the stocks view, the red number is 2.  I'm not really sure how to interpret this.

I'm starting to make my constructions out of children, they're so plentiful in my fortress....

But I've started having a problem(...but also a solution...) where the kids aren't clothing themselves, and so they tantrum, tantrum, tantrum, go mad, die.  Two birds with one stone, and all, but it's not my preferred means.  It distracts my hive.

How the heck can I get these kids to take a look at the clothes in my stockpile?  Or would there be some reason that my clothes stock isn't suitable?  Or aren't as 'there' as I think they are?

I used the link on the first page.  That goes to a mediafire location, but gives me nothing.
Your link, however, gave me the .rar.  Thanks!
