use the chert you have to build an EFF-YOU-ALL gauntlet on top of your fort, supported by a single lever, so when the dire siege, or the boredom comes, you will do something better than abandon

@op: stuff your militia with improvised weaponry, it is probably even better than normal, like pickfighting, which is easier to train, and it is quite good as a wepon too, or you could also go and on misc. object using and biting (THE SPINNING TEETHTACLES TEAR YOUR ARM OFF, AND THEN BEAT YOU TO DEATH WITH IT).
and you will have a dwarfier fort than before
