DF Gameplay Questions / Re: (Not) Solved: a bunch of dead dwarf's in cages.

Have you tried building the cages and linking them to a lever? When they deconstruct they should dump their contents on the floor.

I believe it's under extracts like milk, honey, and poisons.

Nope. they just fucking ate them all.

i get this sooooooooooooooo much :P

From the sounds of the response, looks like i'll be planting pig tails, not plump helmets.

But really why do dwarves decide to eat plump helmets when there's like roasts of every variety available to eat? (excluding plump helmet roast, that would be a weird complaint then!?!)

I've seen this happen when too many dwarves want to eat at once. The first bunch ties up all the prepared food items and then the rest go searching for something else to shove down their craw.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pantherroars a Lead Chest!

Well iron and steel are in real life the best commonly available materials for weapons and armor. DF reflects this in a general way.

Actually, Iron is a somewhat inferior metal for making weapons and armor IRL compared to Bronze and steel... the reason that we "graduated" from the bronze age to the iron age is that the metals needed to make bronze alloy became too rare, and because Iron is easier to work and abundant on the surface of the earth.

So glad someone else mentioned this very common misconception. Not only is bronze harder than cast iron (though comparable to tempered iron), but it also will not corrode away. Once a piece of bronze develops that green patina, the metal beneath is protected from the elements.

Bronze > Iron

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Damn Flies in my Food!
« on: September 02, 2012, 03:17:59 pm »
Flies generally only annoy dwarves that dislike them specifically, and I'm pretty sure that they won't cause food to rot as long as it's stockpiled. Surprisingly, cats that roam the larder will help keep flies at bay, though mine tend to wander a bit wide to keep the flies down.

Also, as of total counting, I have two cows, five sheep, a mule and a horse. Planning on getting some Lamias in the next trade season. Theres also some deer around, so thats good. No sign of invaders yet.

I'm sure it's just a typo, but I'm pretty sure using Lamia for defense breaks your "Only farm animals" challenge.

Quote
In ancient Greek mythology, Lamia (Greek: Λάμια) was a beautiful queen of Libya who became a child-eating daemon. Aristophanes claimed her name derived from the Greek word for gullet (λαιμός; laimos), referring to her habit of devouring children.

Clown Queen!

The guy that's grumbling about long patrol duty is not yet a weaponlord. Once they reach lord status, they want to be on duty all the time.

Used to be a great way to train up architects too. But I'm not sure if building paved roads still provides xp.

I like to combine roads with traffic designations to micromanage my dwarves' pathing. Mostly it's an asthetic choice, but value can be defined in many ways.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do I take something OUT of a bin?

Hmm...it works for other items. Must be unique for artifacts. Frustrating.

Make a garbage dump next to the bins and mark all the artifacts for dumping. Dwarves will then remove them from the bins and stack them in the dump. Then reclaim them and they should get moved to your 0 bin artifact pile.

Also, making sure that you have no food stockpiles that accept eggs will keep them tucked snuggly in their nestboxes.

Now that you know, you can do it on purpose  :D

Oh wow...I usually do the same thing and this little problem had not yet occurred to me. Time for all masons to wear steel hard-hats.

??? Do I have a vampire? Because a trained giant crow was found dead deep in my fort, and yet again no reason was given for this.

Vampires only feed on sleeping dwarves. Something else got the better of your giant crow.
