DF Gameplay Questions / Re: how much should i experiment!?
« on: March 05, 2012, 05:18:34 pm »
There's certainly a trade-off here, and I've read/watched plenty of tutorials. But, I think I would not trade my first experience tapping a river, even though it may have been a success (As it was, I lost both of my mechanics in the instant flood). Sometimes it can be very gratifying to fail a few times before you succeed on your own merit.

I seem to remember reading that alcohol does indeed burn fast and furious, perhaps even going *boom*.

No mud in caverns on reclaimed embarks? Really? That seems awfully broken. What if you irrigate a cavern area? Doe that cause the vegetation to begin growing again?

I ran across this as well on a heavily forested embark. Really need to clear paths of trees or the wagons just pass on. Hope you don't mind whiny elves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do you equip your hammerer?
« on: March 02, 2012, 08:23:09 pm »
As for vampires, I find a quick and easy solution to be a vamp squad stationed on a retractable bridge poised over a nice warm magma bath. They make a bit of smoke, but most of your dwarves shouldn't be too bothered by the smell.
That's actually a really bad idea, because then he'll come back as a ghost - good luck finding the right name to engrave on the memorial slab...

Good...Bad...I'm the one with the lever o' doom.

But, all references to Army of Darkness aside, that's a disheartening realization. And it was so much fun watching them burn. :(

I tend to stick the hammerer into a hammerdwarf squad. I don't mind him executing criminals as I find it a fair bit of !!Fun!!.

Ah hah! There it is. I feel silly for not seeing it as I've been using the one for prepared food forever.

Thanks  :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Sand Bag Troubles
« on: February 29, 2012, 11:49:54 pm »
Does anyone know if there is a setting for a stockpile to only contain bags filled with sand? I see my filled sand bags going to furniture stockpiles, and they even went to a pile that I had allowed only anvils made from any material. I tried an anvil stockpile with iron and steel restricted, but the bag did not seem to want to go there. Any ideas?

And here I thought a beast made entirely of fire would be difficult to put down. Don't know what would make me think that...

Throw everything you've got at it. You might get lucky and have an axedwarf decapitate it. Not that I have any idea if that would actually kill the thing.

All you have to do is weaponize a river...easy  :D

Though, in all seriousness, you might be hosed.

Hah! Only 40 z-levels? My last embark hit warm stone at 153 z-levels down.

And yes...(H)otkeys FTW!

He'll get slightly angry over your failure to build the impossible, so try to do other stuff to cheer him up.

Slightly angry...i.e. storm into the dining hall and begin b#%ch-slapping your peasants. This can cause all sorts of !!Fun!!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: blood in an outside barracks
« on: February 27, 2012, 02:48:35 pm »
Well that's odd...I was pretty sure that the mist generator was what kept my well clean. Maybe there's a fastidious janitor dwarf who's been sneaking in and mopping.

For an appropriately dwarfy solution (i.e. overly complicated) make a mist generator over your barracks. The mist will constantly clean the ground around it, as well as those stinky dwarves.
