Meat, quarry bush leaves, and booze. Everything a growning dwarf needs.

Milk, Cheese, and Meat with no fighting.

Too bad cheese has no quality and takes multiple steps to make. I had a fondness for cheese until I realized my dwarves would be happier with other food stuff.

I take a billy and a few nannies on every embark (except the really scary ones). Everything else that shows up gets slaughtered as it comes through the gates.

Currently, glass trap components do not break. And glass discs make a real mess of any goblin that stumbles into them. Silly gobbos with no shoes on.

Important note: All "Giant" creatures are way tougher than their normal counterparts...way tougher.

According to the dev log, the archery target bug has been fixed, but the current revision has not yet been released. I eagerly await my marksdwarves making use of their training range once more.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How useful are obsidian swords?
« on: February 25, 2012, 01:42:44 pm »
As the above quote suggests, obsidian swords are fairly useless if you have even copper, plus they use resources that might be better applied to making charcoal and beds.

On the other hand, non-economic stone has a base value of 1, the flux stones have a base value of 2, and obsidian has a base value of 3, which means any of those nifty stone crafts or furniture pieces made from obsidian will be worth three times as much as those made from any normal stone. Since base values act as multipliers, obsidian is quite a valuable material for all things other than swords.

However, if you put it into a weapon trap with some masterwork, gem-studded mechanisms, then dwarves will enjoy marvelling at its craftsdwarfship, and it will make room value soar.

You've seriously never seen the dreaded tetrahedrite?

Minor Derail: Dreaded tetrahedrite? I love the stuff. Cheap bolts for training, easy access to billon for bins/statues/furniture/etc, and the occasional silver to keep my hammerdwarves and chain makers happy. What's to dread about such a versatile mineral?

Ahh, I see that the Archery Target issue is fixed but not released yet...good to know.

And I've made sure they have more than enough quivers.

I haven't gotten a chance to test it out since my new embark has pretty much no weapons-grade metal, but I'm banking on the problem being the difference between the Feb 14th release and the Feb 18th release.

That said, I'm currently replacing everything I have with 10 large serrated iron discs which seem to kill a goblin in one hit.

I prefer green glass for my serrated disk traps. Infinite resource, and they're prettier in my head than the iron. Plus, they do a commendable job of sending gobbo limbs flying.

DF Gameplay Questions / Lazy Crossbow Dwarves
« on: February 18, 2012, 08:26:09 pm »
I've run into a strange hang-up. Since the new update, I can't get my archers to train. They're in a squad and are assigned crossbows along with 250 bolts for both combat and training. I have a row or archery targets assigned as a location for the squad to train, and there's a pile of extra bolts within easy reach. And I've made sure they have more than enough quivers. Just can't figure out what I'm missing.

I never had any trouble with this in the past, so am rather flummoxed. Any help?

Like the Spartans of old, DF culls the weak.

I think that
Spoiler: this image (click to show/hide)
puts it fairly well.

The image looks fun, but nothing of that can happen in Dwarf Fortress, or can it?
If it can, please show me a screenshot and you will convince me to play.

Yeah, that's all stuff from DF.  You've got a Giant Desert Scorpion, a Bronze Colossus, a goblin war party, and that last thing I'm guessing is one of the circus clowns, or possibly a Forgotten Beast.  The very last panel is what happens after a thrilling game of Dwarf Checkers.

I always thought the second panel was what happens when Urist McCrankypants throws a fit and smashes something (a table, perhaps) that his casual aquaintance, Urist McIKEA, has lovingly crafted.

Tantrum spiral ensues and, when the dust settles, nothing is left but the vacant stares of the many statues that depict the tragic history of the now dead community.

But then, that just illustrates how easily the imagination can be applied to all things DF.
