DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Greatest reactions to DF gameplay, ever
« on: April 21, 2012, 04:11:31 pm »
I recently began to describe DF to a new girlfriend who seemed surprisingly interested in the premise. She was a bit put off by some of the topics (for obvious reasons) and suggested that we refer to the dwarves as "bunnies" since that would be cuter.

So, I continued to describe the activities of my "bunnies" which led to the topic of combat and the tendency for body parts to go flying. Suddenly, she decided that they were clearly demon bunnies a la Monty Python & the Holy Grail.

This, of course, led to the topic of HFS, to which she responded by declaring the denizens of that foul realm to be juggalos. I honestly couldn't think of anything more detestable. For ever after, HFS will be known as the Dark Carnival, home to the Great Milenko and his Faygo-guzzling, misanthropic horde.

P.S. I will now have to take every opportunity to breach said realm in order to obliterate the juggalo menace.

That's why you should always slaughter elves whenever possible. That way these "elfy" artifacts will be decorated with images of elves submitting and being slain by our illustrious dwarven brethren.

I do the same with these sorts of artifacts. Militia commander, Captain of the Guard, these sorts should look fancy when they stroll through the dining hall. It's all about the status symbols.

A bit of a tangent here, but, Kakapos? Are you actually seeing them fly? The reason this stood out to me is that kakapos are actually flightless parrots from New Zealand and the neighboring islands. If they can fly IG, I might be compelled to wag my finger at the, normally, realistic-to-a-fault Toady.

Well that's just awesome. I hate having my cats roaming the country-side slaughtering all small animals they find only to then bring the little carcasses back and drop them at a favored dwarf's feet.

It is kinda cute though, savage little beasts that they are.

Do cats now respect pasture/pen zones? I seem to remember them just roaming around as they will (which is why one of my first evil embarks had me slaughtering both of my breeding pair after they rose as undead).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Advice on first goblin Siege?

Ahh, the deceptive danger of goblin archers.

I had a recent embark where my first seige was a crew of archers. As they approached my entrance, my own archers began firing from the parapet, which soon sent the goblins running for home. Thinking I had a good old-fashioned route in the works, I unleashed my melee dwarves. Lost at least three before they even closed into hand-to-hand range. I killed the goblins in the end, but it was a bloody mess and my dwarves needed some serious hospital time.

I use dump zones for a lot of different things and so usually remove them or disable them when I'm done with a particular task.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is it possible to get legendary migrants?
« on: April 20, 2012, 02:17:02 pm »
You can get legendary migrants from your previous abandoned forts, certainly. They even retain all their bad thoughts! I'm not sure if they keep equipped gear though- I don't think they do, though.

They do, however, retain any nickname they had been given. Certainly makes them easy to spot.

The way I see the dwarven corpse in coffin issue is that dwarves respect their own. Some foul necromancer has been torturing the souls of innocent dwarves and the least your fort could do is give them a little peace.

At the same time, it really is a hassle to bury all those unnamed corpses.

As far as cages and levers go, why bothering to note them? Allow mechanic on a dozen dwarves, build your cages and a lever for each one, link them, pull them, then deconstruct. No mess of levers or wasted mechanisms, and it won't take too long if you just let every Tom, Dick, and Urist build levers and cages.

I ran into a similar situation and have rekindled my Fun by embarking on the edge of an evil reanimating biome. Deep beneath the earth, my dwarves are delving into terrible experiments involving undead !!Science!!.

There's something rather gratifying about trapping a goblin warband in a room and then dropping the animated corpses of their bretheren in on them.

Is the fact that you get 7 starting dwarves meant to be a Snow White reference?

Coincidentally, in Tolkien's fiction their are seven original dwarfs.

Had to double-take there for a moment: "Thought Bilbo was the 13th party member...oh...right -original- dwarves."

The Silmarillion is a bit harder to remember all of when compared to The Hobbit or LOTR.

Miners are arguably the easiest profession to get to Legendary without any sort of mods/cheats/exploits. Soil layers are key.

I usually have a trio of Legendary Miners by the end of my first year.

I believe the problem might be that you need to build a floor tile on top of the support before you can build the floor tile that hangs over the ramp.

I tend to go the simpler route of digging an access tunnel in the bottom of my moat/pit/well and then blocking it off with a wall once the digging is done.
