DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your most lavishly decorated bedroom
« on: September 05, 2012, 09:42:57 pm »
King's chambers... Artifact candy bed, everything else made out of platinum. I had to make him very, very happy, because he kept mandating stuff I couldn't possibly manufacture. Not coincidentally, that was also the first fort where I deliberately made candy warhammers. I still somehow managed to lose a dwarf or two to hammerings.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How deep is the majority of your fortress?

Usually on the 5th to 20th z-levels, depending on where exactly the first caverns are, and then eventually some floors near the magma sea. My oldest forts are like an underground skyscraper.

Probably historical--she's a legendary bonecarver and probably made an artifact at some point. Is she from a previous fort?

Dear Urist McMechanic,
When I said "Stay in the burrow", I meant "stay in the burrow", not "wander across no-man's-land to get to a part of the burrow on the other side of an active battlefield". If you ever walk again (which is doubtful enough considering the extreme incompetence of Urist McDoctor), I'm putting you on permanent rock-hauling duty.

Bone crossbows, also. While they don't do much damage when they go and bash enemies with them, a masterwork bone crossbow can be truly deadly at range.

Satisfying to kill your first FB, isn't it?

They can be anywhere from trivial to totally overwhelming. Just wait 'til you get one with syndrome dust or made out of rock.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most gruesome injuries
« on: September 02, 2012, 06:52:36 pm »
I don't know if it counts as an injury, but when half the military gets the clown syndrome causing necrosis on every single body part and lives just long enough to reach the hospital and spread the syndrome further... that's pretty darn gruesome. Everybody's waiting for the soldiers to come home victorious, and instead they're dragged in half-rotted, bloated, exuding misama all over the place--and still alive.

But we paid the clowns back. Atom-smashed the bodies, raised the bridges, trained new soldiers. Took half the fort population, but the dwarves came out on top. All those atom-smashed dwarves got masterwork slabs, too.

Loyalty cascade is another possibility.

Let it go. There's at least one example of an awesome elf; why not a second? After all, any elf named "Necrobearded" has to be at least a little less wimpy than the usual tree-hugger. Who knows--in a few million years, this elf's descendents may evolve into something that can actually pose a challenge to the dwarves!

They tried. It just turned into blood pudding, which is too disgusting even for a dwarf to eat.

Why have dwarves invented weaving, but not knitting?

Magma is too honorable a death for them. Put them in a pit with captured wild cave crocodiles.

Your population will get bigger; you aren't going to be able to get enough water from the pools for long. You'd better dig for the caverns now before your workers start to slow down too much.

It's just that when you get an average FB with a syndrome that's non-dramatic, you don't feel the need to post about it on the forums. I mean, "Yawn... giant skinless cockroach with a syndrome that causes dizziness".... what's there to post about? you send your militia at it and it's gone.

A dust-spewing humanoid made of diorite. Killed a dozen axedwarves before I took it down.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Artifact bone pick
« on: August 07, 2012, 11:08:02 am »
It *is* a pick, though. Those are always useful; it's not a complete loss.

Bone weapons are light and don't hold much of an edge. They're good for a challenge, like when you're running a fort without metal. The one exception is a bone crossbow. A masterwork bone crossbow will pincushion a goblin just as well as a masterwork steel one will. They don't work very well when your dwarves run out of ammo and start bashing the enemy with them, but that can be a bonus if you give them to your fortress guard.
