DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My giant raven is laying eggs.

Could be wild giant ravens wandering by. They reproduce by spores, after all.

You're getting chicks, right? 'Cause they'll lay eggs by default; chicks only hatch if there's a male around to fertilize them.

Is it not also a possibility that the exact details of the newer artifact were not determined until you attempted to observe it, and therefore it drew on more recent events for exact decoration?
Could be--maybe the description's generated when you first view the artifact, or if you don't view it, perhaps when you save the game after creating it. That armor stand and toy axe were created right after each other; were they created in the same play session?

Abandon, then reclaim. Dig in fast. You may be able to build roofs to keep the rain off new migrants and caravans on their way in, but only if you can build them in between rains...

If you're very lucky, you may get your first migrant wave before your current set of dwarves die.

You still haven't solved the problem of how to care for babies in your "nursery", though. They'll just die.

If you put a vampire on a screw pump, does the vampire ever get exhausted from pumping?

I put a line of cage traps past the field of weapon traps...

Another thing you can do is separate out the building destroyers. Build a fake entrance--a field of cage traps with a door behind them. The building destroyers will usually path to the door to destroy it, even if it isn't your main entrance (or an entrance at all). That puts them in the cage traps and gets them out of the way so you can use doors and such to control the rest of the invasion.

Maybe the game recognizes it as a dismembered body part instead of a butchered body part?

Are you trying to get babies away from militia moms? I've tried; it never works, and besides, the mom needs to feed the baby. My married dwarf females get kicked out of the military. If they insist on carrying their babies into battle and starting tantrum spirals, they're going on rock-hauling duty.

I wonder if the magma somehow melted the pipe section... I had to rebuild everything above that pump, and then it worked fine.

Okay... This is weird.

I deconstructed the screw pump, and there was no pipe section in it. When I went to reconstruct it, the pipe section was gone. I used green glass for all my pipe sections (this I know, because wood is so scarce that there wouldn't be a reason for me to ever have any non-magma-safe pipe sections made). It's... odd.

I'm going to rebuild this once my glassmaker gets off her butt and we'll see.

ETA: Yeah. Somehow, I managed to build a screw pump without a pipe section, pump water through it, and not notice until it wouldn't pump magma. I still have no idea, but I'm happily watching my FPS plummet as my magma reservoir fills, so all's well that ends well.

I have channeled it, though. Looking at the tile it says "sandstone grate/Open space". Water's gotten through that space; why wouldn't magma?

What other issues could be happening here?

DF Gameplay Questions / Screw Pump Troubleshooting Needed
« on: March 04, 2012, 02:07:10 pm »
My current fort is in a completely frozen area--i.e., no running water, no trees. Found a source of sand by digging out a frozen river or glacier or something, then building and removing a constructed floor across the bottom of the river, revealing white sand. So: Green glass, and then pumps to get magma up from the magma sea and water up from the caverns. Total, about 70 or so screw pumps. They're all dwarf-powered right now; like I said, no running water, and the dwarves need the stats anyway because the goblins have been getting annoying lately.

The problem is here:

The first image is the lower level, the second image is the z-level directly above it.

On the lower level, there are two pumps. The one on the left is for bringing water up from the cavern, and is currently not being powered. The one on the right is being pumped by a dwarf (he's thirsty so you can only see his blue arrow). There are two floodgates controlled by those levers, to allow me to choose whether to pump water or magma. The floodgate on the left is closed, so you can see it; the floodgate on the right is open and located two spaces to the right of that first floodgate.

As you can see, that second pump above is not getting any magma through the grate, even though there's 7/7 magma below it, and the pumps below that are working just fine, bringing magma up (this is about 10 pumps from the bottom of the stack). The floor grate is located above the space right between those two floodgates.

Even more mystifyingly, this arrangement worked just fine to bring up water from the caverns. I've got a full cistern to prove it. I've checked for rogue trees in the plumbing; no problems there. The pump is pointed the right way, and the dwarves can get to it and pump it. The space beneath the grate is channeled out. It's just not bringing up any magma.

What's going on here?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Naked Dwarves

Honestly, I've just stopped worrying about it. I confiscate all their clothes, dump them in the magma, and have them run around in their beards. They seem perfectly content that way, and I'm content with the lack of lag from worn clothing. It's win-win, really. My military gets uniforms, of course. My one issue has always been with syndromes resulting from things getting tracked around; but I usually wall things off and/or put every dwarf on cleaning duty for a while, and that seems to solve it.

Solution for that one is to dump things in from the level above, and have the level below enclosed by walls (with optional door to rescue accidentally dumped items). That way your dwarves can't get under the atom-smasher unless they're stupid enough to dodge in from above.

ITS A LIE!

We now have a suitable candidate. Bring on Urist McProfessorX and the X-Dorfs!
This. And we already have the ability to build ramps too!

Now we just need mutant dorfs...
