I have to try this now. Does it still work in 2010?

Check to make sure you're allowing organic/inorganic materials. That's the last option.

That's the trouble with blocks; the game still tracks them even when they're constructed. You can see 'em in the stocks screen.

Skip all that mucking around trying to muddy floors and just harvest lumber directly from the cavern layers. As an added bonus you'll also have a place to plant underground crops and (if you're lucky) a new place to fish.

And it's not quite as dangerous as you'd think. Even without any training at all, one or two squads of properly equipped dwarves can take out a Forgotten Beast, and they'll be more than enough to handle the usual wandering monsters. And the occasional Giant Bat or Blind Cave Ogre blundering into your fortress and laying waste to the dining room will help give the place that properly dorfy feel.
Caverns are nice, but I find it a little annoying to track dwarves moving through them. The floors aren't all on one z-level, and since you don't know where a dwarf has gone if you don't see exactly which ramp he used, it can be hard to find them again when you want to check up on them. They're nice for hunting, but I much prefer having tree farms all on one level.

Re. the danger of flooding your fort: Yeah, I've done this, oh, about a dozen times. The thing to remember with water is that you can usually build a design that doesn't depend on the dwarf's alacrity in pulling the lever--a design where the farm is enclosed completely during irrigation, and if the second lever isn't pulled, won't flood anything, only fill the farm up with water. If the water inlet is the ONLY entrance to the farm during flooding, and if the water has somewhere else to drain when the farm fills up, you won't have any trouble. Put a floodgate on the water drain, too. And always have your levers in a room with a door on it; that way you can lock the door and keep insane and tantruming dwarves out.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I want to rebuild the Parthenon
« on: February 06, 2012, 06:20:58 am »
I'm thinking of rebuilding the Parthenon in Dwarf Fortress. Your typical megaproject. It's a beautiful structure, so, heck, why not?

The thing that worries me is the possibility of the FPS going too low, because of all those marble blocks stacked up and having to be tracked by the game. I've had a few thousand blocks built before, and it always slowed things down to ~60 or so. This would be more than that.

Anybody got experience with this kind of thing? Any way to deal with the problems of FPS going too low?

Also: No, I'm not turning invasions off; if the ancient Greeks had to deal with invasions while building stuff, why not me? I figured a big outside wall would do the trick; but of course there are fliers to deal with. Squads of crossbow dwarves for those, I guess. I don't have any experience with shooting across z-levels, though; how well does that work? Usually I just station them behind fortifications near the entrance, the flying enemies enter and are confined to one z-level by a ceiling; and it's like shooting fish in a barrel, but I'm considering sticking some towers on that wall and putting the archers behind fortifications in there.

Multiple z-level archery... does it work? Any problems to watch out for?

Also: Can someone direct me to a guide that would let me generate a world where I can get an embark site with enough marble (or similar light-colored stone) to build this thing? I haven't yet played around with world generation and am quite a newb at it.

Never got a request for cut glass. They have used cut glass gems for a demand for cut gems, though.

Just drain the unwanted water off the edge of the map through smoothed wall-->fortification.

Floodgates must be placed both on the inlet and on the outflow, or else you won't be able to control well enough.

A whole level... just redirect the river.

You could dig out an entire dirt layer below the surface. As long as you leave the very last tile on the edges un-dug and ensure that any openings to the surface are roofed over, you'll be completely safe.
Ditto. You got soil layers--use 'em. You can't possibly have such a huge wood industry that you need more than two or three levels worth of trees.

I'm guessing s/he went off to get dinner while the world gen ran. That's what I'd do.

Round here, "Catten" means "a cat too old to be a kitten but not quite grown". It's a hybrid of "cat" and "kitten".

I dump unwanted stones in the magma, or atom-smash them. That helps with the lag. Nobody needs 14,294 pieces of gneiss.

Uhm, guys? They're digital bits of information. About, oh, a few quadrillion times less complex than a bacterium. Much less a human.

"Kill off all migrants" is already a challenge... Primarily a challenge in ghost management.

And, anyway, however much we kill off pixel dwarves, I kind of doubt we'd be willing to support it in real life. Knowing what we do about history, I'm willing to bet that more than a few of us would happily die to prevent the Holocaust from happening again.

Lemme reiterate: Dwarves Are Not Sentient. Okay? Right then. No guilt necessary.

...Anyway, FB syndromes are much deadlier than miasma.

No picks at all? What about an anvil, to make picks?
