DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: January 06, 2012, 07:31:35 am »
Crimsonhold has really become crimson thanks to a single forgotten beast (beware its fire!)

All was well for the Ashen Crux of the Kingdom of Ash. The militia was forming, the first wave of stupid mongrel Beak Wolves was held off by the moat and gate, and weapons and shields were almost (key word ALMOST) ready to be forged.

"The forgotten beast Urast Shurldrast has risen! A giant skinless alligator, it undulates rhythmically. Beware its fire!"

'No problem, i have a wall, right? Oh god, my door! That thing'll break it down!' Thankfully, as this particular fort is abour 50% aboveground, I have several dwarves on mason duty, and they manage to seal up the door before it can arrive.

'I'm safe now, right?'

"Urist McScaredyCat cancelled Store Item in Stockpile: Interrupted by forgotten beast"

Multiply that by a hundred, and that's what flashes through my fort every minute or so. See, I forgot to fill in the walls ABOVE the main one, so dwarves climbing down my stairwell to the magma forges can't actually pass because they have line of sight on it. I have ten dwarves in full iron, why not just kill it?

Magma forges are my only forges. I have no spare anvils. My militia has armor, but no shields or weapons. Shields wouldn't be an issue, but the part with the GIANT BURSTS OF FLAME make going out without one more suicide than pitting a year 2 militia that's been established for a grand total of five weeks (in game) against a FB already is.

I gave them all the equipment I could, drafted my miners, and sent them out and began to remove the wall.

"Urist McRandom cancels Remove Construction: Interrupted by Forgotten Beast!"

Crap. Well, I suppose I may as well just dig a way around. But then, out of abso-freaking-lutely nowhere, the single child in the fort runs up to the wall and takes it out (another reason to hate the little buggers). He's immediately killed by fire, followed by the returning militia, followed by the rest of my fort.

I savescummed, I'll admit. The Fort was just too good to lose. It was the first one in around twenty-five to have iron, first of all, and it also had:

-Copper for shields
-Nickel for crafts
-Plenty of gems
-A legendary bone carver for bolts
-Did I mention the stupidly scarce iron that showed up in abundance here?
-Oh yeah, and a metric beard-ton of native gold for more expensive crafts
-Abundant candy
-The most perfectly-defendable spot for the actual fort
-A booming metal industry

This only works for males, but generally I chop their phallus off and beat their brains in with it.

It gives a new meaning to "dickhead"

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My dwarves are pussies
« on: January 06, 2012, 05:28:45 am »
So, I'm playing and stuff, building up my first wave of gear on my shiny new fort that has iron for the first time in forever. I'm getting set to forge some steel weapons and iron shields, when I get a message:

"The forgotten beast Aban has risen! He is a gigantic skinless alligator. He undulates rhythmically. Beware his fire!"

'Oh, no problem' I think, 'I have a wall set up down there, he can't get through'

My dwarves go about their business, smelt a few pig irons, etc. when I get a storm of messages.

"Urist McPrissypants cancelled job: Store item in stockpile. Interrupted by Forgotten beast."

Why? Because they can see him over the wall, through a one wide space. My problem is, now I'm stuck. I have gear, but only full armor without shields. Even if I raised a military using the stuff I've already forged, they'd get obliterated by fire and beat on it uselessly with their fists. I have Beak Wolves at my gates and it's late autumn, so I'm not getting dwarven assistance this year, and not only will my dwarves not wall off the area they can see through, they won't get close enough to wall off the staircase!

"Why not forge more?" one might ask. My forges are on the other side of the crossing, with no other way through to them. Any attempts to forge anything lead to more sissy-lala job cancellations, and even worse, my only spare anvil is being used in a suspended building that no-dwarf want's to finish! Argh!

So, Bay12, A) should I open my doors in the caverns and let the !!FUN!! in, B) build a billion traps, or C) just dig around it? (Hint, C is totally... um... let's see, reverse psycology... C IS TOTALLY NOT A GOOD ONE TO PICK, DON'T PICK C AT ALL!)

UPDATE: The caravan managed to squeeze in right at the end. I had enough for an iron buckler and a bronze pickaxe, which I'm now giving to my miner in combo with some of the other gear I've accumulated. Hopefully my dwarf-style lightsaber will put an end to this menace!

Put a pit on either side with MOAR TRAPS

They'll dodge and fall off, and since they fall they become stunned which means (I think) that the traps automatically hit. Of course, your dwarves that fall will get hit by traps so be wary.

I sent a PM to the guy who made the HoL thread, so he might maybe add it sometime.

A picture of the "Your fort has crumbled to its end" screen would punctuate the end of that post nicely.

But anyway, allow me to put this in DF terms:

This is a masterfully crafted story thread. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It menaces with spikes of invasion and depression. It hangs with rings of awesome. It is encircled by bands of amazing. On the item is an image of Weatherwires is adamantine. On the item is an engraving of dwarves and demons in slade. The dwarves are laughing. The demon is being struck down by the dwarves. On the item is an engraving of Kogask Murdershot in gold. Kogask Murdershot is being struck down. This image relates to the fall of Weatherwires to time in 235.

Don't feel bad, my militia commander got his foot ripped off by a ghost and then spent three months in the hospital before getting depressed and dragging himself around for the next six months till he died of starvation

Even her description sounds downright terrifying.

Her skin is pink. OoOOoOohoooOoo.

Wait what

Maybe I'm getting confused with a different game or something

HNG

Spent two hours on a fort (stupidly) without digging down more than soil and a few stone layers. Cobaltite is the bane of my existence, as it takes up a valuable metal slot. The only other metals were Galena, Native Silver and Sphalerite, because apparently the game just hates me more than usual recently.

NEW EMBARK, AWAY!

AND THEN THERE WAS MAGNETITE AND HEMATITE

So great, now I have iron but no other materials!

Since most of this pack I wasn't particularly interested in at the moment, I only downloaded the music tracks. I replaced the song_game file with the file from the pack and renamed it (I copied the original file to the zip for safekeeping) but now all that plays is the title track on loop in the actual game. I really like the music in that pack, so is there something I'm doing wrong?

The downloaded files are in the appropriate folder (sound folder in data) and named song_game, and I have the other file removed from the folder, so what am I doing wrong?

OH GOD GOBLIN SIEGE

Urist Mcbadassmilitiacommander: Don't worry, I got this!

Urist Mcbadassmilitiacommander has died of blood loss!

He might also have the "Start Fistfight" job, which means that he's going to punch your leader in the face to make himself feel better.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Goblins ambushed a dwarf trade caravan
« on: January 04, 2012, 10:14:02 pm »
Things can only be "stolen" in adventure mode, so unless this is an adventure question then you can't steal anything. If the dwarves die, you're free to pick up any stuff they brought and make off with it, but the liaison will probably die as well and thus you can't request anything. Even if the caravan lives, the actual merchants will run off after being attacked but the liaison will still visit you.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: how you get your military to work?
« on: January 04, 2012, 10:10:54 pm »
With fortress defense, I'm still adapting. My old way of having small master+studen squads no longer trains enough men, so once I find a decent embark I'll start with one hunter who'll become my sheriff/CotG and train another five marksdwarves with him. Other than that, it'll be an even spread of hammers (if I have silver) or swordsdwarves (if I don't) with spears and axes, probably conscripting full squads at a time even though they train atrociously that way.

I rarely get past 110 pop before some Warwolves happen to arrive with some Stranglers who invite some goblins who have some Putrid Blendec friends and they all show up at the same time on my doorstep to kill me (and accomplish that task quite well)
