DF Gameplay Questions / Problem with hatchlings
« on: November 09, 2011, 05:18:38 pm »
I've started embarking with 1 Hen and 1 Rooster.
Allows me to get a solid amount of eggs and a steady food supply later on.
I'm having a problem though, My chicks when born will fight each other constantly.
I've seen this happen with dogs, but in cases I've had my rooster kill off some of the baby chicks.
Any solution to remedy this?

Many of my forts are under 50 total population.  You won't get a mayor, which can be a good thing as you won't get mandates.  You probably will not be able to defend against a decent siege or even multiple ambushes with military alone, most of my fortresses use elaborate deathtraps and mechanical killing devices to kill invaders.  Many of the crafting and less commonly used jobs will have at most one dwarf around who can do them well, so losing a single dwarf hurts more.
yeah, and thats what I was worried about too.
Wouldn't feel too bad about using runesmith to replace them though.

Question arises though.
With a population cap, once you hit that cap but loose dwarfs.
Will migrants still show up?

Been thinking about starting a fort up where I set a population cap of about 20-30.
So small population, thriving fort.
Seems like it should work, each dwarf having a singular job that they do.
Along with 5-10 people just set to military then another 5 as probally teamsters that would only be around for hauling.

How do you think this would all work out?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I come to you with a story.
« on: November 05, 2011, 08:17:23 pm »
A story of Love, Triumph, Defeat, and Booze.

I know this may belong in Stories but I'm not a fan of the board.

~~MURDERVIPER~~

A story of two lovers, torn apart by Nar A beetle of the flaming variety.
You see Kib and Dismab Agadil were married, they shared love, and profession, each being a legandary axelord,
and the only soldiers of the fortress MURDERVIPER.
The only Two standing between Nar and the fiery death of their fortress.
That and Kib's 15 Battle hardened war dogs.
They fought, and they fought tearing wing from body and flesh from bone.

When the dust settled Kib found to his dismay that his 15 war dogs had been slain.
The fort was safe for now, but at the loss of kibs loyal dog army.
This sent him into a downward spiral of hard drinking and self mutilation.
Eventually he started to lash out, his wife Dismab had to put him down.
The two engaged in drunken combat, the battle between lovers spilled into the hallways and many innocent civilians were cut down in the fray.

Dismab finally did what her dwarven union required of her and laid the battlecrazed kib to rest in his Silver Sarcophagus.
She dug two graves that night, and had her own coffin built next to her husbands.
For that night, she too went insane.
Wrought with the guilt of having to kill her only love, she begun to kill dwarf after dwarf.
Expressing her hate in the only way she knew how, after days of battle and bloodshed the few remaining dwarfs of MUDERVIPER struck down and laid Dismab to rest.

The fort did not last long after the defeat of Dismab and Kib.
But the tales after lasted for ages to come.

DF Gameplay Questions / DF on mac?
« on: November 01, 2011, 11:59:42 pm »
I like being able to sit out by the warm glow of the fire.
So I tend to spend a lot of time on the Macbook.

Is there a current version of Dwarf fortress with a similar setup as the LNP?
I could do without all the DFhack and dwarf therapist.
Mainly just the added texture packs?

Even is somebody has a current build of DF thats mac compatible, and doesn't mind walking me through the process of adding texture packs.
That would be most helpful as well :)

Nah, everything in a cage gets let out when you haul it to the depot. I assume it's because they're stored in the cage which, being a container, acts like other containers. They're seperate entities, so you'd need to designate them both to trade, but you can't designate living creatures to be sold unless they're with their cage. See the problem?
No they don't.
I sell tamed badgers constantly to trade caravans.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Rule my fort with an iron fist, every dwarf is expendable.
I don't allow idlers just standing around, everyone has a job and if they have no job. Its stone detailing and engraving for them.

Totally changed my avatar after finding that picture, seems fitting now.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Question about cage traps.
« on: October 22, 2011, 08:13:32 pm »
Adding to the last question, if I am unable to tame them.
What is the best way to just turn them into food? Let them loose? or what.

Foxes are considered "exotic" pets, so you cannot tame them without a Dungeon Master. Unfortunately, you can't actually get a dungeon master, so you'll have to edit the raws (replace [PET_EXOTIC] with [PET]) in order to do anything with them.
I'm rocking LNP, so would I just be able to click the "Exotic Pets" Button and will that edit the raws automatically of all my saves?
