How do I do that?

I'm using the latest version of the LNP (r08) and when I launch Dwarf Therapist I get two error messages:

Version check error
Memory lay out error

It seems like I can't use DT to reliably assign labors to dwarves: I assign a labor, let the game run a minute, and check DT again (by hitting the "read" button) only to find that some other labor has been randomly reassigned.

Is there a workaround for this?

The "first" material?  Will a burrowed dwarf leave a burrow to grab material outside the burrow, if he/she needs it to complete a job?

Ah, of course.  It had never occurred to me that eating and drinking are handled as "jobs", that would explain it.

Although in practice, a dwarf would basically never leave a burrow he/she is assigned to, as long as he/she aren't assigned to a second burrow somewhere.  The trick is that in order to get them into the burrow to start with, they must be assigned to, or have accepted, a job inside that burrow.

So you could for example make a simple burrow system which included a burrow that gives access to food and drink, another that gives access to sleeping quarters, maybe a third on the surface for smoke breaks, and then add the dwarves you want to have burrowed to all of them.  And then create specfic burrows around specific workshops designed for specific dwarves, and in this way have a much tighter control over how your dwarves move within the fortress.

Have burrows always worked like this?  I've seen workers I've assigned to burrows refuse to stop for food and drink if they aren't available in the actual burrow, at least in 34.11.  I've always been under the impression that once a worker gets assigned to a burrow he/she can't leave it.  Is that not the case?

I keep getting combat messages in which no one appears to be fighting, but suddenly dwarf x "is thinking more clearly now!"  I've scanned my fortress for carp and not found any....

Anyone know what that means?  Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

PS.  While I'm at it, has anyone else experienced the following problem with burrows: if you assign a specific dwarf to a specific burrow for some reason, he/she "freezes" in place, wherever they might be on the map, and can't move because they're unable to complete their current assignment before continuing on to the burrow?

well, strangely enough, I now seem to have "war golems" and though I can't train them, I can pasture them.

Have no idea why they turned into war golem though (I certainly didn't train them), and the name "war golem" only shows up in the zones ("i") menu.  Under the the unit list ("u") they still appear as "friendly" others.

I did unlock a technology (Warbeast kennels") but have no idea how to use it.  I can't find a warbeast kennel anywhere in build list, anyway.  Damn if I can find it in the manual either.

So, I've sent two of my new marksdwarves to school, but see no difference in their abilities.  Does it take time for the improvements to show themselves, or am I doing something else wrong?

I'm running a game with a lich as one of my starting 7.  I've noticed as well that he seems to need to eat and drink despite the description in the the text.

He also started out with a high competence in mining so I've let him work in that profession so far.  Every now and again I'll confine him to a burrow that I've made over my refuse pile; he'll come up and raise a couple of friendly bone golems. Then I let him go back to mining.

You can't control the golems, and sometimes they start fights unnecessarily.  They're surprisingly weak against black bears.  But when my fort was unexpectedly visited by a poisonous megabeast recently they made short work of him while my dwarves hid downstairs.

Thanks Meph, you were exactly right.  it was a burrow bug.

megahelmet:

This might be a stupid question, but do you have a sawmill?  Sawmills are necessary for tree growing.

Okay, I have pipes, tobacco, and a brazier.  Why can't I start the smoke pipe reaction?

In fact, all of the possible reactions in my brazier are red.  I can't start a fire, for example, even though I have plenty of logs.

What am I doing wrong?

This mod is utterly mind blowing, you know that?  I have to get up and to work in four hours, but here I am, thanks to you.

Anyway, I guess I was lucky to discover the marker almost directly after embark, before there were to many dead things around.

And now I bid you a good night, sir!  :)

Hej Meph!   :)

No, nothing happened when I found the marker... but, well, there are a couple of complications.  One is that I don't have any corpses, except for a dead gnoll and a dead lamb.  There other is that I have a lich.  He likes to go into my refuse pile every now and again and raise a friendly bone golem or two, or five, for me.  Don't know if that has any influence on the affect of the marker....
