DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF on Linux
« on: September 03, 2007, 01:08:00 am »
Hey, msa:

Well, I got it to work, sort of (and I learned a bit about wine as well).  But it's very, very slow and, in addition, it doesn't fit my 900x1440 wide screen when I play under Ubuntu.  Anyone else out there have that sort of problem?

Caution seemed to indicate as well that he could run it without wine.  Is that possible?

Maybe if I were to set it up under its own Windows directory, like you've done, msa?

Oh, and one other problem: every time I quit, I get kicked out of Ubunutu and have to log in again.  Strange, yes?

(edited to add in a last comment.)

Great, and God bless ya, msa.  I've been trying to figure out how to do this for weeks (ever since I discovered DF, actually).  I'll try it later on tonight and let you know how it goes.

Ah, there's a command line.  You see, it's because I don't know how to start anything under wine.

Still, I'm not sure I understand you. Your directory looks like something I'd find with Windows. I've unzipped DF in my /home/games/Dwarf_Fortress directory.  What would my command look like, approximately?

I have nothing against RTFMing it, by the way, if you can point me to a tutorial.

Sorry, but it doesn't work for me.  Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Whenever I start it, I get the full-screen inquiry, followed by an error message (corrupt index file).

I downloaded DF from the web page, but it didn't come with an installer.  I simply unzipped it into its own folder.  I've been playing it like that under XP, but it won't work in Ubuntu.

Should I use a command line like sudo apt-get? Or am I doing something else wrong?

DF Gameplay Questions / DF on Linux
« on: September 01, 2007, 04:03:00 am »
I've got a dual-boot system running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn alongside XP and I was wondering if there are any ubuntuniks out there who can help me get DF running under Linux. I've got Wine installed but I'm still just too green when it comes to  Ubuntu to figure what to do next.  I asked over the at Ubuntu forums but never got a response -- guess they haven't discovered DF over there yet.

Any help on the matter greatly appreciated.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bridge building

Yes, that much I understood.  I'm just not sure which command fixes the bridge the way I want it to work.

Actually, strike that.  I think I finally figured it out.  Like most stuff in this game, it's pretty simple once you understand it.  w raises the bridge from the north: correct?

Good luck, homer.

Since I'm in the process of building a bridge too, I hope you don't mind if I pop in to ask a question as well.

I'm building a moat for the first time, and want to add a drawbridge.  It is of course extremely important that the bridge goes up and down in the right direction.  I want it to be attached and hinged on the eastern side of my moat, so that it raises up from the west.  When fully drawn up, I want it to be standing on the eastern edge of the canal, opposite from my enemies.

My options are wadsx, in that order, but for the life of me I can't make heads or tails of which one I want to select in order to get the bridge up and running correctly.

Can anyone out there clue me in?

To build a bridge you need a mason, a metalsmith, or a carpenter, depending on the material you are using.

Bridge building is a bit tricky as well, since you must build from a secure base.  In addition, bridges are built in the same way that farm plots and canals are built: you start with a single marked tile, expand vertically with the u key and horizontally with the k key.  But the secret is to mark more than one material when building.

A bit difficult to explain, so, an example: a single stone of slate can be transformed into a three-tile bridge.  But if you use two stones of slate, you can build a bridge that spans 7 tiles.  The formula is X x 4 -1, where X = the number materials you use.  It isn't obvious, but you can select several materials with the enter button before you use [p] to place your bridge.

Hope that makes sense.  The wiki has some helpful info in this regard; just search for the topic "bridge."

The final question is about how to decide which direct the drawbridge shall go up or down, but don't ask me about that, as I haven't figured it out yet myself.

Good luck!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: outside or inside?

After you've successfully flooded your farmland, you must tell your farmers to build a farm plot.  B (build) > P (farm plot), and then mark the space.  In case you didn't know, the space marking system for farms is a bit different: you use u to increase the farm area's height, m to decrease it, k to increase it's width, and h to decrease it.  When you have it sized right, hitting space will let you plant it.  You should be able to figure it out by reading the instructions at the bottom of your screen.

If you get a message that the plot construction has been suspended, that's probably because a dwarf is fetching a stone out of your field.  I usually turn off stone hauling for all of my dwarves during this phase just to make sure I can plant my crops without interruption.

Learning by experience.

Very painful, sometimes.

Darkchampion:

Horribly mismanaged?  We're not experienced enough to know.  I thought they were brilliant.

At least they had fun, which, as far as I can tell, is the whole point of the exercise.

Thanks, Mr. Toast.

No, you know, I've been reading BoatMurdered and laughing until I cry.  The elephants really seemed to do a number on those guys, anyway, so when I saw them on my map, I kinda freaked.  Good to know their not always as dangerous as they seem.

These dwarves are so charmingly hapless.

Because the outside water source lay so close to my cave wall, I decided to go ahead and build a moat from the river to wall.  Following slartibartfast's advice, I started a couple of squares from the cave wall and worked my way towards the lake.

I didn't realize that you can't build a moat from a lake until I got the lake and nothing happened.  So I figured I'd have to extend the canal around the lake and over to the river.

Just as I had been warned, my poor miner nearly drowned.  But at the last second he managed to pull himself to dry land -- on the wrong side of the canal.  So now he's trapped on a tiny two-tile space between the river, the canal, and the lake.

At first I was sure that I had lost him -- that he was going to starve to death out there on that little man-made island of his -- but then it struck me that I have a good chance of rescuing him if I can only get my mason to build a bridge across the canal before the miner starves.

Wish me luck!

By the way, another quick question: can you build a drawbridge adjacent to the cave wall but outside the cave?  And a attach a lever to cave wall so that you can draw it up and down?  Because if you can, then I'm in like Flynn, baby.

Is there any specific width the channel needs to be?

Undead elephants?!?

You jest.
