Help! Help!  I have elephants!

A quick question: how do I build a moat?  Is it simply a matter of building a channel from the nearest outside water source to the cave wall, or is more complicated?  Will a moat stop elephants?  Is there a risk that my canal builder might drown, and if so, how can I best prevent that?

In response to your first question: construction projects will be canceled if someone else is doing something in the same space at the same time.  For example: you assign a farm plot build, but another dwarf has been tasked to fetch a stone from the same area at the same time.  This will often cause your project to be canceled; it's a minor annoyance, and easily resolved: q, highlight the project in question, and hit s.

Don't know if I understand your second question, but maybe someone else can come along and help you with it.

Well, I warn you I'm also new to the game.

I start by piling stone and ore outside my fortress, and building a mason's workshop and a mechanic's workshop, side by side, right next to the piles.  That way my mason and mechanic have direct access to the raw materials they need for floodgates, doors, mechanisms, and so on.

I don't move my shops into my fortress until after I've built a bunch of other stuff: it usually takes about a year or so before I relocate them.

Actually, I think there's something wrong with him altogether.  Even when I turn off all his other functions and set him to gather wood and stones, refuses to accept the job.  He does not appear to be able to leave his workshop.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

Hey, yet another question for anyone out there: I don't seem to be able to get my jeweler working. I've built a jeweler's workshop and I have a jeweler standing by.  I've got lots of rough gems lying about in the floor of my fortress.  But when I try to activate my workshop (q > cut gems), I get a cancel message: "jeweler cancels cut, needs rough gems."

I've even created a stockpile for the gems in front of his shop, to no avail.  According to wiki, I don't have activate any other labor role to make a specialist do his/her job.

What am I doing wrong?

According to the wiki, one can greatly increase one's food output by cooking alcohol in a kitchen.  How does one go about doing that, specifically?

Now that I've managed to build the depot and do some trading, I don't seem to be able to empty it of goods.  I've got six om my dwarves doing nothing but hauling food and items (turned off all their other functions)because the wiki warns that otherwise it can take a long time to offload your stuff.  But even with every other role/function turned off, they don't seem to want to go near my depot.

I'm a bit desperate because somehow I managed to eat all my stores (never done that before) and am near starvation; only got something like 20 plants to eat at the moment.  And an immigration wave coming in the not too distant future.

Help or clues, anyone?

By the way, can I ask a second question, somewhat off topic?

How do I shift tools between dwarves?  If I have one dwarf tasked with woodcutting, and he/she has the axe, and I decide to give to job to a different dwarf, how do I get dwarf one to relinquish the axe and give it to dwarf two?
