lacking other shiny stuff I have used silver disks and they worked well enough.
The trap gauntlet up to the entrance was pretty disgusting after a few ambushes by bronze/copper/iron armored goblins. Arms, legs and heads everywhere tbh. 10 in each traps, 3 in each row, 3 rows with say 4 empty spaces between rows.

Got a little greedy after the blue stuff and opened a pathway straight down to HORROR!
Had a child survive all alone for a year. With a fractured lower spine he was "lucky" he had been tossed into one of the food stockpiles. Poor guy, dragging himself through the stockpile on his knuckles while screams of terror echoes through his home with only panicked poults to keep him company...

Hey, there's a Tolkien story about a human adventurer who slays the dragon, only to get his sister pregnant and commit suicide in the same year.

So it's not like hero-stupidity is without precedence  :P
It's a damn good Tolkein story, too. Best and purest heroic epic you'll find in modern literature.

1-5 all done quite fast phased:
1: Dig farm, still, kitchen, butcher and tanner room in soil layer, dig to rock and excavate makeshift dorm.
2: d some t's to be cut. Set up a "take-all" stockpile and pick the cart apart. Pasture the beasts.
3: Dig out more rock, workshop area and stockpile. Use rock for walling up top. Trade depot.
4: Make beds and get the floor plan for bedrooms done. Place beds and make rooms.
5: Set workshop jobs. Assign Broker.

6: Plan more stockpile areas, great dining room and dig down for caverns and magma. Exploratory mining in simple line digs.
7: Plan for wells. Probably expand bedroom block.
8: Assign Manager and Book keeper

9: Defense works should be done (traps, pits and bridges)
10: Start the military.
11: MAGMA or bust.
12: Maintain and expand.

Fiance thinks I play DF when starved for sex. SO I make sure she sees me playing every now and then. So DF usually gets me extra sex.

I've got a bedroom block layout that works well for me. Found it in the wiki and altered it a little bit.
Other than that, my forts are all different and grow organically depending on need and resources.

I place still, kitchen, farm, butchers, tanner and pastures close by each other.
Workshops that don't need fire goes in one place/row(s).
Keep the bedroom blocks a few zlvls from the furniture stockpiles...

Layouts vary.

Had this happen two times.
No problem picking up the dropped merchandise once all the merchants/guards were dead the first time around.

Second time I ran to rescue the dwarven caravan from the goblins. I was a little late and the surviving merchant went berserk. I told my squad to kill him and then...and then....FUN.

ya know, sometimes you just got to let it rest for a while.

Since I mostly play it for the simulation (DF = high functioning, violent and productive mental asylum) I rarely seek thrills or set goals.

Seems that you're more versed in the dwarfing. I would suggest you do !!Science!!.
