You nay ever gonna keep me down

He drinks a Whiskey drink, he drinks a Vodka drink
He drinks a Lager drink, he drinks a Cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves Ignore Dining Rooms

Am I wrong or will having 2 chairs per table cause some problem? Dwarfs don't like crowding, right?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: fall trap Question

Yeah, I have a 17z execution pit. Remains are often in five to six pieces.

Goblin Elite Crossbowman's head
Goblin Elite Crossbowman's mutilated corpse
Goblin Elite Crossbowman's arms x2
Goblin elite crossbowman's legs x2.

Makes for a very quick execution. :D
I sometimes throw animals to be slaughtered down there, where there is a butcher's shop waiting to process it. Very efficient >_>

making it 18z's with a few floor grates on 17 won't make a difference there, right?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Whiny Miners
« on: November 18, 2011, 09:19:47 am »
first time I did dig into magma I did it with d > d...and killed one of my miners.

You can use the d > h for channel instead. Doing this from above is a bit more safe. Need to be pretty sure that you're not below the magma top level tho. If you are, expect it to flood.
Do some exploring a few levels above the hot stones to make sure.

unless something has majorly changed, this is wrong. magma is never pressurised in its natural form.

the best way to go into magma is to just designate a staircase down from above. it lets you go straight down which removes the possibility of accidentally digging sideways into it with ramps. once the magma is breached you can just wall it back up and open it up again where you want your access

oh, thanks. I was under the impression that it behaved in a slower but similar fashion to water.

If I may add, plant growth does look good on engraved masterpieces in real life, sort of like ruins. Why isn't this put in DF?

do you walk like an elf as well?

1st time I wanted to irrigate a farmplot, tapping in to the stream, using no floodgates.
1st time I made a well, tapping in to the river, using no floodgates.
1st time I placed floodgates, locking a dwarf inside the waterway.
1st time I tried to build a 2z high wall, trapping a mason and not noticing until he was dehydrated.
1st time I killed a dwarven merchant that went berserk...  (just last week).

those are just some of the times I've facepalmed at myself... there are just so many. :)

Kill them and take their stuff. They're goddamn pussies they only might go to war for that.

That's the thing though. I don't want to kill them because I want them to bring as much cloth as possible. That way my dwarves can walk around in ☼fur-clad purple coats☼ and with ☼oversized white hats with feathers in them☼.

needs more ruby encrusted scepters..

But is a 'garbage' zone different from a refuse stockpile?

Garbage zone, set by the 'i' menu is ..well.. a zone.
Refuse you collect in (p)iles, just as you do with food, furniture and such things.

also i cant figure out how to brew.

normally getting food is a problem, so i just buy massive amounts when carvans come (esp from home) but last fall they didnt come because the time before i pissed them off with too many bad offers apparently, but we made by with no starvations. also how do I get my dwarves to cook/eat seeds? i set 3 or so kitchens up incase it was needed that they were cooked as meals to be sure, but idk.

can anyone help me? oh and also enemy corpses and somtimes loot isnt touched at all even when i unforbid it or mark it for refuse. why is this?

Brewing is pretty easy. Build the stil(l) workshop. Have your craftsdarf make stone pots as they can be used as food and drink containers.
If you set seeds to be cooked however, you will take away from what you need to plant. Brewing will "save" the seeds.
Also, you will notice that when you look at the prepared meals you can find roasts of the drink type. :)
Make sure you have some dwarf with the Brewing skill active.

Good luck with the collar bone.... be glad you don't have my run-of-the-mill bonesetter dwarf... you'd be an arm poorer. ;)

I've got a save from just before the message about that mandate popped up. I'll see if I can upload it if you want to have a look.

Edit: Game crashes when I abandon the fortress. Tried on start as well as after I regain the ability to appoint admins again. :(

I go to the (R)ooms screen and flick through it and notice that a few rooms are marked in red and tagged with a red "S". I (f)ree whatever furniture is defining the room and this goes away.
Just so you know, that red+"S" means that the rooms are "shared" - specifically, they overlap with other designated rooms and thus have reduced value.
Aha! Thanks.

Right, I'll try to keep it short and to the point:

Pop limit set to 50, military squad of 6 danger roomed uber axe dwarfs.
Merchant (dwarf) arrives, so does ambush. Merchant goes berserk and makes short work of some of my civilians who headed to pick up the loot from the dead donkeys/camels. The civs were unburrowed so nothing strange.
I react with swift and sweet justice and let my military hack up the merchant and the guards who still protect him.
A certain "feature-by-design"* happens. (my first time)

Now while I look on in surprise and amusement the population is chiseled down to two surviving dwarfs. They kill everything as a more veteran player would expect.

At this point they are Count and Mayor.

A few migrants arrive (2) and they live a short and whipped life in the fort.
The 2 remaining axelords go insane and goes to their rooms and I lock them in JUST as another 2 migrants arrive and make it to the fort.

I decide to keep this one going and as the last two of the original crew die from thirst/hunger the two newcommers manage to pull the levers to close the fort to the outside world. The only living dwarfs are now the last migrants.

When the next caravan arrives I remember that I need a broker and go to the (N)oble/Admin screen to find that I can't select anyone for any position. It's not that they don't have the skill, that wouldn't matter. The screen is all blank apart from the control key list at the bottom.

I am surprised by this little message:

Stubbornly I keep the fort running another year with these two. I then notice that the last goblin invasion had claimed a door to the fort and I retake it.
I go to the (R)ooms screen and flick through it and notice that a few rooms are marked in red and tagged with a red "S". I (f)ree whatever furniture is defining the room and this goes away.

Another batch of 20 immigrants arrive and I let them in.

Another few months go by as I let the dwarfs handle the cleanup and burials. I keep checking the Admi(n)s screen quite often.
It's not until another dirty elven trader peaks in over the boarder that I see that I can finally appoint Nobles/Admins again. YAY!

So:
Did I lose the mandate to appoint leaders as the last of the admins died? It made me lose any kind of leader.
Did the goblins, for a short time, "own" the fort due to the claimed door and the low number of inhabitants?
*I really don't think it should be called a bug... perhaps a warning could help tho. :)

Short and neat. :P

(response to flaming removed)

Further more, just wait till you get a dwarf caravan, which gets caught in an ambush. Where the Merchant goes berserk and kills one of your haulers who, while unburrowed, headed for the "fat lewt" the donkeys dropped. This Merchans gets a kill-tag for your Squads to play with...
And then you know you won't say "DF isn't hard" again...
