« on: February 19, 2012, 01:48:02 pm »
1. I have a Female and Male Ettin in a Pit that i throw goblins into, will they have children? its been half a year, but i still hope that itll eventually end up a Pit full of corpses AND baby ettin.
2. Ive recently got a hold of a dragon. Hes a dude dragon. He wont lay eggs right? and if i catch another dragon thats a female, will the eggs become fertalized leaving me with a buncha baby dragons?
3. Will a dragon and Ettin fight if put in the same area?
4. How does fire affect Corpses? does it Destroy the corpses? I do enjoy having many bodies litering my pits :x.
5. Will a dragon fly through Hatch covers, or can it even fly at all?

Edit: Can i tame captured war animals and breed them?(assuming that they would normally be able to breed)

How many  Z-levels have to be between a pit of monsters and normal worker dwarfs to not allow the dwarfs from running in fear from the goblins?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf Speed
« on: February 17, 2012, 10:58:11 pm »
So ive been having problems with my dwarves moving around fast, I cant seem to get them to catch up to enemies. But i suspect that if i increase the movement speed of dwarves, productiving AND combat will improve.

So, my question is this: how do I maximize my dwarfs speed?

this includes both economic dwarves and military dwarfs.

(also: I use a single dwarf in his own squad to hunt, instead of having a hunter dwarf. would it be best to give him a hunting dog or a war dog? I tried to give him a war dog, but the dog couldnt seem to run much faster then the dwarf, and then when the dog actually caught up to the enemy it just followed behind it without attacking it)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Attacking another Race's Fortress?
« on: February 17, 2012, 06:40:44 pm »

So, I guess just take solace in tossing goblins off an execution tower for now.
Nope, theyre not getting away with just a simple death from falling a huge distance, im dumping them into a dwarf-made cavern with other mean monsters. Its a shame that i can go steal from a kobold or destroy their buildings. anyways, thanks for the information.

DF Gameplay Questions / Attacking another Race's Fortress?
« on: February 17, 2012, 06:31:42 pm »
So im guessing its not possible, but is there anyway to attack another race, such as goblins or kobolds? Theres all this stuff about how their civilization lives and builds, and theyre obviously able to attack dwarves, but there seems to be no way to attack them. While yes it may be fun to get attacked constantly by other races or have your items/babies stolen, i just want to know if theres some way to get revenge on them other then keeping them in a cage for the rest of eternity.

i can agree on the overcrowding death issues with sphal, ive had rooms designated specifically for large ammounts of turkeys, and after like 5 or 6 clutches of turkey eggs hatch, alot of the poults die soon after because theres ALOT of turkeys up there, wether it be from fighting, or just consuming so much air that they just choke.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Minotaurs?

I've got a caged minotaur outside my fortress. I release her when the goblins arrive.

She is wielding a capybara leather loincloth and seems to be quite the expert with it. So far 11 goblins and two humans have met a humiliating end!.
so she kills things with the loincloth? shes not wearing it?

3. You can turn off invasions in the raws, somewhere, can't quite remember (never had to turn them off xD)
Well its just getting bothersome, i had goblins retreat after most of them getting killed or they just got bored, either way, before they were even off the map another message " A vile force of darkness has appeared!" popped up, and i could only respond with a -_-.

For your danger room the dwarves training must have full coverage equipment, including cloaks/robes to protect all the little face bits and gloves and boots for the fingers and toes.
would a helmet gauntlet and boots solve this problem? or do they have to have cloaks and robes under their armour

ooh axes, very dwarfie. thanks for the help, still looking for suggestions/info on danger rooms, or maybe ill just start a cave for goblin hunting to train soldiers, itd still be easier to make a danger room it seems, im going to go look into the d_init.txt file to see where to turn off invasions so i can set it like that as soon as my current seige ends.
btw: while digging out my new civilian rooms, i noticed that a dwarf will dig a few blocks out, then run to the exit but stop halfway or so, and then come back and dig some more of the stone, and do this repeatedly, each time he was to the exit he shows as : no job. Anyway to prevent/stop this?

DF Gameplay Questions / a few random questions

1: do catapult do anything more then destroy stone? ive shot maybe 200+ stones at a large grouping of still standing goblins, and even with a high catapult quality and a good operator the only damage ive caused is a bruised spleen. (which apparently he recognised to mean he could have alchohal anymore, and decided he to end it all)
2: what causes the goblins to seige you besides population, is there somthing that increases the frequency at which goblins attack? such as created wealth. (the rate at which goblins attack has become quite obnoxious.)
3: what can i edit to stop the goblins from attacking me, without completly killing off the goblins(such as killing them via not being able to eat food.) allowing me to stop assaults for long enough for me to get situated.
4: is the danger room system really a good way to train soldiers? and what should my danger room consist of? i have a basic idea of a armor stand, door, then upright spear trap made of 1 wooden training spear, but is the danger caused by these rooms high enough for me to have a nearby doctor to constantly so that i dont lose any of the dwarfs? (i tried it once before with a non wooden spear, and it killed my steel/iron plated dwarf with 1 pull of the lever.)
5: it seems weapons like hammers tend to do less lethal damage, but more accumulative damage, such as bruising or braking something, aside from the dwarves pretrained weapon skills, or preferences, what weapon can i make in abundance to be a quick and clean killer?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Brook water>Well water?

i found an underground cavern with a good place to farm, so i have a few questions just to add that dont have to do with designating water, and instead of making a new post ill just add it here.
if i wall off an area in the cavern and farm there, will animals such as large olms, crundles, and other destructive cave animals spawn there if there are constantly dwarves nearby?
can i set up a burrow so that the farms can have their own rooms, dining area, and stockpile for food allowing them to stay downstairs the entire time and stay in the area to farm?

im on a volano, even the aboveground part of the map is part stone(id have to make 1x1 plots only to be rewarded with strawberry beer, which would make my dwarves feel unmanly and cause more anger then if they went booseless), and i know you can make muddied stone into farm plots, its just i have been seiged constantly with brakes between them not even large enough to cut more then a few tress, so attempting to pipe some water for inside irrigation would be very dangerous.
