DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Advice for a returning player?
« on: October 07, 2016, 02:35:09 pm »
I haven't played since .40, but recently I got the urge to play again. I am vaguely aware of the changes in the newest version, like taverns and libraries and visitors and such, but I was wondering if anybody had any advice or guides for catching up.

(Also maybe some advice on how to set up proper magma smelting, a military, and to which extent I should use minecarts, since I've completely neglected them until now.

Other Games / Steam Situation Resolved
« on: December 25, 2015, 04:12:56 pm »
I do not know what the fuck is going on, but serious shit is going down.

r/steam thread.
You can log into random strangers' accounts. Keep a VERY close eye on your credit/debit cards, don't visit the store pages NO MATTER WHAT, don't log in anywhere, etc.

As I said, I don't know shit, just throwing this out there as a warning to people who might not know.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / New Version Performance?
« on: December 02, 2015, 09:21:16 am »
Hey, I just wanted to make this thread to ask how the performance is in the new version. Better than DF2k14, worse? About the same?

My computer is pretty beefy so its not that big of a deal for me, but I'm sure it is for lots of other people.

Life Advice / What to do with Raspberry Pi?
« on: October 07, 2015, 12:53:20 pm »
So, I won a Raspberry Pi 2B about half a year ago, and now I finally have a screen to actually use it.
I've set everything up, got a wifi dongle installed since I don't have ethernet cables in my room.

Now all that's left is deciding what to actually do with it.
I am almost certainly going to be putting a bunch of emulators on it since I bought two USB SNES controllers, but there's probably more I can do with it. I just can't think of anything. So I'm asking B12 for suggestions.

(I also won an IR camera for the Pi)

Other Games / In-Browser Sculpting Toy

I was linked this from somewhere on IRC, it's pretty neat:

You get a sphere that you can sculpt. It's pretty fun to mess around in.

Tip: No new tris are created unless you enable the dynamic topology option!

ITS HAPPENING.

Looks to be the same ole engine, probably polished up a bit more. THE SAME ENGINE BUT UPDATED A LOT.
The overal atmosphere of the game seems to be not like that of the previous two games, introducing much more color. It also appears that we are going back to the Capitol Wasteland and Vault 111. Apparently I am wrong, and it's set in the area around Boston, as confirmed by some dudes on reddit everyone at this point, really.

ALSO YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE YOUR POWER ARMOR AND THERES A DOG AND THERES CUSTOM WEAPONS HOLY SHIT
ALSO YOU CAN BUILD DYNAMICALLY IN THE WORLD AND HAVE SETTLEMENTS IN VANILLA

Fairly straightforward: A cross between the game SUPERHOT, where time moves only when you move, and Hotline Miami. Great fun.

Life Advice / Recommended science fiction books?
« on: April 29, 2015, 01:03:44 am »
I'd like to order some more science fiction books, but I'm sort of at a loss as to which ones.
I've already ordered four (2001,first two Culture books and neuromancer) and they should arrive soon, but beyond Chasm City, I don't know what else to buy. Feel free to suggest fantasy books too, I guess.

Life Advice / Computer stuttering
« on: April 17, 2015, 02:37:58 pm »
My computer, a high-end laptop that cost me almost 1500 euros a year ago, is getting stuttery.
Playing BYOND causes stuttering, and TF2 too. I don't know why, it started recently. Everything is on my Geforce GTX 860M card, I have an internal intel gpu but it is, afaik, disabled.
What could cause this and how can I solve it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Some military questions
« on: April 08, 2015, 11:21:50 am »
So, I'm trying to set up a military.
I have a few questions :
1. What do "Squad Eq" and "Indiv Eq" on the barracks q menu mean?
2. How do I get my dwarves to do demonstrations/sparring instead of individual drills?
3. How good are archery ranges?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Mussels
« on: April 04, 2015, 01:52:18 pm »
The artifact page on the wiki says that shells are the hardest to come by, but I find this to be very much not the case.
I have a LOT of mussels. They all produce shells. Even with a legendary mussel carver spamming me with masterwork mussel action figures of my militia captain hugging ducks, I cannot empty my shell/bone stockpile. I'm drowning in mussel shells. What do I DO with them?

Life Advice / Adware
« on: February 22, 2015, 11:26:25 am »
I seem to have caught Roll Around adware somewhere. It keeps popping up ads everywhere, which is obviously incredibly annoying.
I tried to clean it with MBAM, Adwcleaner and SUPERantispyware, but nothing seems to help. There's no processes, no extensions, etc. I'm using Google Chrome on Win8.1

General Discussion / Bay 12 Time Capsule 2015
« on: January 03, 2015, 06:05:42 am »
I'm surprised nobody made this thread yet.

For the newcomers, the concept is fairly simple. You post something in this thread, in a spoiler if you wish, and after a few days the thread is locked. Around new year 2016, the thread is reopened and you can all review what you said one year ago!

I'm going to brood on my time capsule contents for a little bit more, but that doesn't mean other people can't get started already!

DF Modding / How do I get rid of babies?
« on: October 29, 2014, 01:37:00 pm »
I have too many babies. Over half of my 120-dorf fort is babies. Whenever a dorf dies, he is almost instantly replaced by babies. It is too late to change things in the init, but is there any way to just delete all of these babies? A DFHack script, perhaps?

(Setting the adult age to 1 will not help, a lot of skilless adult dorfs is only marginally better than a lot of babies and children)

Other Games / Atom Smasher - Puzzling Linear Collider Builder
« on: October 08, 2014, 11:43:21 am »
Scott Manley did a video on this, and it's a pretty fun game.
You basically have to build a collider that reaches the specified eV quantity by building a particle accelerator. However, all the parts of the accelerator have to be hooked up to eachother with wires, which are stored in a stack, so you can only ever access the top one. So you have to pull, pop and exchange the wires to get the right one at the top at the right moment. You don't have limited space, but it's fun to try and do it as compactly as possible. Each level has different parts too. I almost completed the last level but the game crashed, sadly. You can also keep playing after you complete the level, to get maximum electron volts.
