Als die vuile (zeg: voile) Duitsers en dikkenekkerige Fransen hunne eigen thread krijgen, waarom wij dan niet, eh?

DF Suggestions / Better conversations
« on: July 11, 2014, 06:44:54 am »
Conversations are a bit eh, currently. Everyone always recycles the same sentences, and I think there's a few ways to make it seem more natural:
Add some useless parts to sentences.
Instead of always just "it's for the best", how about:
  • I think it's for the best
  • It's probably for the best
  • I think it's probably for the best.
And choose between these randomly (including just good ol' "it's for the best")Combined with the usual "It's for the best". Just add a few random adverbs to the reaction sentences to make them feel more natural.

DF General Discussion / It is terrifying

It is terrifying.
It was inevitable.
Mastering the forces of nature would glorify us in the eyes of the world.
It is terrifying.

DF Community Games & Stories / The Foundation - Asimov meets DF
« on: June 11, 2014, 12:29:37 pm »
So, I've had an idea. It seems fairly straightforward what this idea is about, it is about a crossover of Asimov's Foundation and DF.

If you haven't read the Foundation series, I recommend that you do, because they're great.

This idea mainly occured to me because the first book read a little like a DF succesion fort, in my eyes.

Sadly, I have no idea how to execute this idea. We'll have to wait until DF2014, that's for sure. History progressing is absolutely essential. I guess this would be more about the story than anything else, but one would also have to decide how closely we will follow the books, or only in basic premise.

Then there's the problem of generating a suitable place to embark, a dwarven civ about to fall.

Either way, is anyone interested in this?

General Discussion / Two Million Total Posts
« on: June 01, 2014, 12:31:27 pm »
So, while investigating the dissapearance of most of our menu bars, I somehow stumbled into the statistics center.
There I saw this:

Total Posts:   1998491

we're almost at two million posts

But then my view slided to the right, and I saw something even more baffling:

Average posts per day:   2355.71

This, combined with the total amount of post, means one very special thing:
Bay 12 will reach two million posts tomorrow.

Creative Projects / Miauw makes a text adventure game!
« on: April 09, 2014, 02:57:08 pm »
It doesnt't even have a proper name yet. The folder is currently called ADVENTURE. I don't have (m)any ideas for a plot but probably sci-fi I guess.

Either way, I've promised myself that I'm going to write a text adventure game for several reason:
  • Improving my C# skills
  • Improving my writing skills (I have hardly ever written anything though)
  • Actually coding a standalone project, all of my other coding ventures are for /tg/station.
And for (hopefully) impressing a girl <.<  >.>

So yeah. Today I have finally started with this. It's not much, but hey.

Current structure ideas: (laying in bed at night/in the morning, thinking about how to code~)
4 types of things:
Rooms, self-explanatory.
Entities, anything you can examine IN a room.
Doors, to transfer between rooms. (possibly a subtype of Entities)
NPCs, talks to you. (using simple conversation trees) (possibly a subtype of Entities???)

This is the first thing I'm ever doing in C#, so roadbumps everywhere, probably.

Todo:
set up a todo list.

Life Advice / Looking for a gaming laptop
« on: February 14, 2014, 01:49:50 pm »
This current laptop is sort of dying, or at least the graphics card is.
I've been getting crashes that I am 90% certain are GPU-related, just randomly for the most part although Aero will ALWAYS cause a crash. Taking a screenshot with a too large resolution in openTTD also gave me a BSOD with a GPU-related stop error, so yeah.

I need suggestions for a new good gaming laptop, since I have no idea where to start looking.
I have no specific requirements, just that it should have quite some bang (and preferably over 4 gigs of ram). Not even sure about the price yet.

Life Advice / Love and stuff and social akwardness
« on: January 17, 2014, 01:55:23 pm »
So, I have a crush on a girl in my class. I just really don't know how to talk to her without being weird so I can't work up enough courage to talk to her, which is keeping me from talking about her which is just slowly tearing me apart.

I really really don't know. I can't even formulate a decent post.

Life Advice / Anger issues
« on: December 02, 2013, 03:10:07 pm »
So yeah, I've pretty much always had anger issues to some extent. I'm easy to anger and I'll start to cry and try to hit people and even spit on people etc etc. Generally make a fool of myself. Whenever I'm under stress, I tend to cry, too. It's one of the main contributing factors to the fact that I'm so scared of interacting with people that I don't know.
I just want to do anything about it, but I really don't know what to do.

Life Advice / How hard is it to build your own computer?
« on: November 03, 2013, 01:36:22 pm »
So yeah. I'm 14 years old and I killed my laptop trough a tragic power button accident. (Well, the OS is dead).

So my parents offered to buy me a new computer. I'd have to chip in, obviously. So I tought that, maybe, I could build my own computer and save some money get a better computer for the same price.

So yeah. How hard is it?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The 0.34.11 Simple Questions Thread!
« on: October 21, 2013, 11:59:18 am »
So yeah, the adventure mode forum has one of these and it's really useful so you don't have to make a bazillion threads for every single question you want to ask. Seemed like a good idea to post it here too.

Pretty simple:
Ask question
Get answer
???
Profit!

These questions can basically be anything fort mode related, from asking wether you military is set up well to how you do a specific thing and more.

I'll start: Say that I have an aboveground fort thingie to keep goblins out, not on the edge of a hill, just a freestanding fort with walls and a drawbridge. On the second level there are fortifications. Can enemy archers shoot trough these fortifications if they get next to my wall?
Code: [Select]
Z-0
w = wall, . = floor, F = fortification

.w.
.w.
.w.

Z-1
.F.
.F.
.F.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Carve Fortifications not working?
« on: October 16, 2013, 02:03:05 pm »
Sorry for making multiple threads in such a short timespan, but I've got another problem. For some reason, I can't designate fortifications to be carved. I select "Carve Fortifications" from the designations menu, select an area and nothing happens. It doesn't overwrite other areas, nothing is marked like you have with all other designations. Nothing happens.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Infections always lethal?
« on: October 15, 2013, 11:51:17 am »
So yeah, I've got a dorf named after a guy in IRC and he's an axedorf. He got injured in a goblin ambush and can't stand or grasp properly anymore.
Either way, one of his wounds got infected. Will this kill him anyway and should I drop him into the caverns for one last heroic stand? Or can this infection be cleaned away?

Other Games / Zineth
« on: September 19, 2013, 02:02:18 pm »
Zineth is a 3D platformer focused mainly on speed and a tamagotchi fighting minigame.

You're in a huge mech and you can basically glide and run around like nobody's bussiness, it's pretty fun! And free!
Link to the game's page.

Fair warning tough, it was made to be played with a 360 controller.

Let's share max speeds. I got a little over 700 speed by wall gliding on the outside of the large glass bridge.
