DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: January 23, 2016, 08:23:23 pm »
I just dealt with the messy aftermath aftermath of a were-mole attack. It was easy enough to kill (Turns out enough unarmed peasants can kill just about anything). Then the survivors transformed, carved a bloody path through the fortress, were put down, their killers transformed... Ten minutes and 30+ corpses later, the snowball's come to a stop.

Looks like a bar fight to me. It's rare, but occasionally they end up with somebody dying. Did it happen in your tavern?

Nope, I don't even have a tavern yet. The fisherdwarf's corpse is by the river I assume he was fishing in, on the surface.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So then this happened
« on: January 23, 2016, 05:06:30 pm »
I was getting my fortress up and running, when I got this bizarre message that a fisherdwarf had died. Weird; There weren't any hostiles around. I looked into it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Apparently, the fisherdwarf had gotten into a fight to the death with the visiting liaison, a fight which started when the former grabbed the latter's teeth and stubbornly refused to let go. The outpost liaison proceeded to beat my dwarf to death with his bare hands, gleefully talking about how it was good practice for his fighting skills.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As you can see, after he finished beating the fisherdwarf into a bloody pudding, he got up and ran away in a huff.

I don't suppose anyone can explain what the hell just happened?

I'd like to be put on the waiting list for this. I usually play with ASCII, so that's not a problem for me.

DF Community Games & Stories / New succesion game
« on: February 06, 2014, 09:35:12 pm »
I'm thinking of making a succesion game set in a scorching biome. Would anyone be interested?

I'll add in details and rules and stuff if there's interest in starting fresh.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Figuring out axles
« on: February 02, 2014, 06:46:03 pm »
I just noticed yet another problem - there's no power connection between the drive train on the upper level and the pumps.
Axles only transmit power in their main direction, not to the sides. That means a vertical axle will accept and provide power only to tiles directly above and below. You have one positioned horizontally adjacent to an incoming horizontal axle, which transmits no power. And it appears to stand on a solid floor, so there's no power transmission to the lower floor possible anyway. To connect power from a horizontal axle on the level above to the level below, you need a gear assembly, and the floor under it must be channelled away to actually transmit power. If there's proper machinery on the level below, the connecting gear assembly can (and in fact must) be built on "empty space" - it will be supported by the machine component on the level below, e.g. a pump, vertical axle or other gear assembly.

You can check if your machinery is connected properly by checking the "Total power needed" display. If you look at a complete block of machinery that should all be powered by one source and get two different power readouts like here, there's no transmission between the two parts. And if "Total power" is zero, it means that no power at all is incoming. Check power readouts for your windmills, to see if they generate power at all - chances are you have three independent readouts, one for each mill, with twenty or forty 'total power' and zero 'total power needed'; if the windmills show zero 'total power', you're in even more trouble - either the central tile of the windmill is under a ceiling (on a tile marked "inside" - channel away floor above the _central tile_ or remove constructions present above it) or you ended up in a biome without wind and will not get any use out of windmills in this fort.
By far most forts have at least twenty potential windpower per mill, though.

I did what you recommended, and it worked perfectly. The fruits of your advice:

I salute you, Urist Mchelpful.

DF Gameplay Questions / Figuring out axles
« on: February 02, 2014, 03:45:35 pm »
Alright, so I'm trying to pump out lava from a volcano with a pump stack to flood the outside world. The stack's built and my power systems are running, but the power isn't actually reaching the stacks for some reason. Can someone give me a heads up on why this could be? (This is my first time dealing with axles)

Here's my setup, from the highest Z level to the lowest.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Human megabeast
« on: July 09, 2013, 01:55:18 pm »
So I was minding my own buisness in my latest fortress, when all of a sudden, I get a message that a mega-beast arrived. "That's cool", I thought, "Walking XP for my axedwarves". And then I checked the specifics of the announcement.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When I zoom to it (His? Her?) location, I find that it (He? She?) was caught in my alarm system of cage traps.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm considering sending this... thing to die in my arena. Advice?

Well they did prepare it for you at least.

I'm uncertain if this is a good thing or not.

DF Gameplay Questions / Modding vampires/Iron
« on: September 11, 2012, 02:19:40 pm »
1. Can you disable vampires, or make them similarily harmless? I'm relatively new to DF, and I've yet to make a fortress that hasn't died in the first few years. Having vampires out for my blood is a bit much.

2. Is there a way to find a location with a 100% chance of having Iron?

I wait for a month for my turn, forget about the whole thing, and up getting skipped.

*Vahir has a horrible fell look!!*

Whatever you do, capture and breed the elves so as to have a plenty full supply of entertainment.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Lack of bachelors
« on: March 08, 2012, 09:35:21 pm »
Yeah, used to be like you.  "Don't draft the mothers" and "Make sure that mood gets fulfilled!" and "He's tantruming, better make him happier and not order him killed" or "Leave the gate open!  The woodcutter is still running away from the ambush!" Then I started throwing children to their deaths in an ornate glass display case in the middle of the dining hall.  My dwarves attained "has become used to tragedy" and I along with them.

Sigged.
