Very nice - I like it. I've done something similar, minus the catacombs at the bottom, which I didn't think of... Nice touch. =P And a carpload of bonus points to you for using steel and platinum.

I was of the opinion that blood cannot form anything more than a pool, though, so that's a bit disappointing. =( Maybe we can get Toady to add the possibility of rivers of lava around volcanoes and rivers of blood in evil zones. Then blood would have 1/7 - 7/7 tiles. The rivers of lava is unrelated, but I'd still like to see it.

Easiest way is to head to the modding forums and download DFHack.  Then enter "ssense" command, and it'll run!  But, for my stonesense incurs massive drag time, to the point of slowing my computer to a crawl.  So I tend to use it sparingly and only to take quick looks.
Do you have dual-core or better?

Hmmm... Sounds like you had a burrows instead of an alert. What you do is you go to the military screen ("m"), go to the alerts, add an alert, select the new alert to activate it, and then select the burrows. Everyone will rush into the burrows, no questions asked.

Also, congrats on the Fun! Now you've got a great story to tell. lol

I'll be a Baron!
Bad things happen to nobles...

@Gizogin - lol again.

As a miner/mason, I'm going to construct large pointless architectural works of art (stadiums, cathedrals) without anyone giving me permission. I hope nobody minds.   ...also, as I can only haul one sock at a time, and there will be socks littering the fields after our goblin battles, it may take me a while to clear a spot.

I suppose elves have ALOT more balls than the kobolds..

Honestly, you have to appreciate the sheer ball-size of the elves, they look like they have prostate cancer!

The balls they have to have to be able to tell US DWARVES to not chop trees down? HUGE BALLS.
I say they're all bark, no bite... Forgive the pun. I'm serious, though. Only their archers are worth much of anything, and even those are poorly-equipped as far as armor goes.

The forum is, unfortunately, full of people who presume themselves unworthy.  If dwarfdom has taught me anything, it's that "good enough" doesn't matter.  I'm nothing.  Just some chick with a keyboard, too many gold nuggets, and giant phalli on the brain.  If you think you're not good enough, then stop thinking.
Well, then, fine. :P I've only been playing since last September, but I've built megaprojects to match a lot of what I've seen on here. I prefer archers as military until I have dwarves to spare, I prefer to keep my forts running for 5-15 years, I'm a bit messy when it comes to underground architecture, I can handle keeping my dwarves fed with domesticated animals only, and I enjoy pointlessly large one-shot traps. I'll take a shot at it if anyone will nominate me. I've never successfully breached the circus (well, I did once, but it feels like cheating, as I just waited for the demons to disperse so I could attack them mano-a-mano), and I doubt anyone will vote for me, but I'll gladly take a stab at it. I hereby nominate myself. :P

If we don't get the players with legendary-like status here on the forums, I might end up nominating myself.

Should the fort map/world have low or high mineral scarcity? I think scarce would make it more intresting.
It's going to be hard enough without scarce minerals, I think... Besides, I think we already decided it would be a "normal" map, to better demonstrate to the newer player just what the elite are capable of.

I really want to see what toadie can do now.
Yeah... I'd like to see Toady upload one of his forts... If I recall correctly, though, he once said he never built forts that were that old - he played just long enough to test certain things. It'd be killer if we could get either of them into this (and the Ultimate Fortress thread, once it's started, would definitely be bound for the Hall of Legends), but I seriously doubt either of them have the time. Which is fine with me, honestly - they're pouring everything they have into making DF bigger and better. I'm all for it.

Or he's making OCD-hell forts and confused as to why he can't get past the aquifer.
He designed the aquifer... lol    There's no way he hasn't gotten past it at some point. He would've had to test it to make sure it wasn't impossible to get past, anyway, right? It's more than likely he devised strategies to get past them before anyone else even had access to them.

If we're really so sadly lacking large numbers of people, then I'd offer my services as one of the seven, if anyone would vote for me. Unfortunately, I'm not quite a DF elite, I don't think. lol

I wonder if we could get Sphalerite or Quietust.

Beyond dwarven intelligence? What a terribly elven thing to say. It's more than possible. In fact - I bet it could be accomplished without mods. I may try it myself, though, granted, I never read the books, nor saw all the movies...

Only elves say "it can't be done." ;D

Nobody wants to be a military dwarf? Does The Twelfth Bay really have no military?

Wow. Just wow. lol

Mr Frog - is it possible that it's a human Lady that turned into a Holistic Spawn during worldgen?

:-\ so are we really losing half the fort?  You said teaser, and this definitely teases... It looks like it's already in Mr Frog's old tunnel... how it's there, I have no idea, since you said that you had to dig a new entrance at one point. But that would (I assume) kind of bypass the spike trap in all its gleaming newness.

Well, as I said, I'd be human. Might make a nice companion on your travels, if you didn't mind someone inherently evil and oafishly stupid. I traded my ability to read for a +1 to dodge. Traded my ability to feed myself, too, which is a bit of a problem, but hey! I got +2 to swordfighting from it.

Lol, Gizogin. XD Best post I've read in a while. And SRD, you were honestly kind of asking for it, making yourself a noble.

Sabreur, I have to agree... Girlinhat would be the most likely, yeah, but for everyone not directly involved, it would be a fun, knowledgeable experiment... fun with a lower case F. :P For those directly involved, the F goes capital. Even so, if the poor dwarves involved knew what they were participating in, they'd probably think it was awesome, too.

Acetech, let's be honest here.  We can do this multiple times.  First time, glorious time, we'll make a real fort.  No, not a fort.  Seven players having a simultaneous strange mood and making a masterful fortress.  We demand obsidian, steel, and blood.

We can always host a pvp game, that's not a new idea.  There's nothing saying that we need to host only one attempt.  We can dedicate one towards an artifact fortress, and another towards traditional community aggression.
YES! This.

Where to embark?
I like the volcano idea... not so sure about the river... Or maybe it should be done on just the basic map, to show what can be accomplished with just the normal embark?

Finally,

This devolved from the best fort ever, with a goal of it being a showcase of how the finest DF minds go about working their magic, to a fancy PvP game. The original idea was great, and the fancy PvP idea isn't even close to the same thing. If you're going to do fancy PvP, do it, but the original idea sounds way more interesting.

Who says we can't do both? Possibly first the showcase of the magic of the greatest DF minds, and then the PvP. The showcase first would allow them to get to know each other's weaknesses, and give them a chance to plot each other's downfalls...

I honestly agree, but was trying to be open to other ideas.

Eh, I'd kind of like the first one too. =P If we could download the save afterwards, it would be epic. I'd like to see people manage to grow strawberries in HFS (somehow the possibility of doing it directly under a spire escaped my mind)... No mods, nothing special. Just seven dwarves against the world... And against hell.

But the idea of the greatest minds working to defeat each other with sheer dwarfy brilliancy appeals to me, too. :P

EDIT: Ninja'd. Apparently KodKod thinks like I do, just faster. :-\

10 players... sharing a world...

You will all die of anger fits before the dwarves do.

-odd berserk text snip-
7, not 10, now. And that's precisely the idea. You don't get at the dwarves, you get at the players controlling the dwarves, through the dwarves. That's epic.

Oh, and how about this: if something goes horribly wrong and everyone decides it's your fault, you're out.

Expanding on some of the ideas already presented, such as dwarfing and struggles between players, how about this:

Every player gets to name a dwarf after themselves upon playing. The next person along in the rota must keep that dwarf alive no matter what happens during their turn, but the more suffering you can put that dwarf through the better.

Eventually if this ended up being some kind of rotation based game we could build up quite the few grudges and see elaborate projects developing just to get back at the player who exposed you to the kitten-rot and kept you hospitalised for the better part of a year.

A lot of succession games end up with players inflicting all kinds of fun on previous overseers, so I am sure it could work here.

That sounds like a reverse of a lot of different games I've heard of, namely the "screw the next player over" theme. Nice idea, I kind of like it... though I'd honestly prefer the madness of a 7-overseer fortress. :P

edit: Either way, I can't take a turn - I don't have a good enough connection for it.

I wonder if we could hold a rush style of community game, like playing 1 season each.  It would ideally work while the people are online and could pass off the file immediately, perhaps abusing some type of drop-box, I'm sure google has invented a tool specifically for that.
It takes a bit to do the writeup, particularly if you have pictures. By "a bit", I mean a couple to several hours. Even for just a season. It would have to be mainly a non-picture update of how the fort is doing, leaving out most of the storywriting typical of succession games.
