I think natural variability would at best be a detriment to game play. It wouldn't effect player behavior most of the time. But there may be times when a player wants a precise weight for a particular purpose. In the real world, people would weigh some rocks, and pinch a bit off or add a bit as needed but in DF that's not possible. Having materials with a fixed mass is useful in those cases.

For example, someone may want to skip a minecart full of wood across a channel and catch it on the landing in a single tile. If the weight of the contents are too variable, then you cannot make the channel and landing the perfect width and distance. That's one less way to have fun in DF.

I'm in general in favor of more accurate simulation, but not in this.

Furniture should be a loser -- you need large slabs to make doors and tables.

Stone crafting and polishing could stand to be use smaller parts, but stone is still abundant, so it hardly matters.

It probably makes sense for the coke reaction to produce more coke. Same with wood and charcoal.

Instead of making dwarf traffic blocked on intersecting carts, it's probably safer to block cart traffic when dwarves try to cross the track.

It doesn't make sense or peat to become coke. Why not just make peat fuel itself?

DF Suggestions / Wheelbarrow hauling routes

Hauling routes are for minecarts, and animal carts, why not wheelbarrows too? It would work just like a guided mine cart, except no tracks are needed, and the capacity is much less.

Instead of killing the old fort off, why not embark as a different civ?

Yeah, not fond of having migrants be grumpy because they can't do their useless skills they came to the fort with.

Cygwin would be a fourth platform that Toady has to support. Why not just play on Linux?

Ingenious intrusive take a long time. Igneous extrusive would take moments, with sufficient cooling. Currently obsidian is the only true igneous extrusive rock in DF, which obviously isn't the case in real life.

There are different kinds of magma, which DF does not model. Some flows fast, some flows really slow. The rate of cooling also varies.

942
Why use a magma fall, when you can just send the cart through a magma filled ditch?

Tables and chairs can't cause collision damage though, and mine carts can. So it's an open question.

If rubble is added, walls should be build with 1 stone or block and 1 rubble.

Contaminants won't spread on offloaded maps. And most creatures don't actually drink.
