DF General Discussion / Re: Moments that make you want to scream

TBQFH, nothing in game, as if something goes wrong I know it is my fault and just deal with it..

If is things like THIS THREAD which kind of piss me off.  People who come and spew walls of text bashing a game, before they have taken the time to actually learn about what they are bashing.
Actually, the thread which complain about criticism are generally far worse, not to mention more common.  I seriously don't get how an inoffensive post like the one you linked to could possibly be upsetting

Posts that complain about posts that complain that some posters complain are even worse though  :P

On the other hand, most other forums don't feature incessant back-patting about how smart and superior they are.

What are these pokomons you speak of?

Stuff

*Applause*

EDIT:  I seriously don't get how something like tectonics gets so much love.  I'm all for realism, but Toady's time is limited and I don't see how tectonics could be more important than fleshing out core gameplay

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this in the three pages I didn't read of the topic, but here's my two cents.

The community would be what it is now if the game were easy to pick up. All of us here are relatively clever, hard working, willing to press on through incredibly hard situations and open minded. This is because to play DF you need to be all of these things. You need to be open minded just to play the game in the first place, you need to be able to press on through your first siege and countless lost forts, you need to be hard working to get anywhere in the game and need to be clever to understand it. If it wasn't for these natural obstacles out community would be the MW forums or the Halo forums, a gibbering mess of twelve year olds screaming in text speak.
You forgot modest

Yeah, I get funnies too. I cannot see where someone blame Toady for their own problem. Kohaku, can you kindly link to one particular post that shows it?

So that's what you took offense at so much?  Wow.

Well, I don't think the difficulty of getting into the game is the same difficulty (or lack thereof) that older players complains about.

The difficulty for a new player is to understand the game interface, how to tell dwarves to do X or Y, how to master the basic features (farming, stockpiles etc.)

The difficulty that older player want is - most of the time - at the end of the game : harder siege, stronger HFS, less productive farming, and so on. Few of these things become relevant before the fort has reached a good size (80ish dwarves), so they don't concern new players : by the time they have a fort this big, most of them have a pretty frim grasp on how to play.

What this man said.  The problem is that the game gets easier and easier, instead of the other way around

I'll show some of my experience - someone relatively new to the game (although he likes to frequently refer to how old school a gamer he is) read a post talking about aquifers, misunderstood what was being said, and so immediately jumped onto the Suggestion Forum to argue against something he completely misunderstood about the game.  After being corrected, he then blamed Toady for him not understanding the game even though the misunderstanding had nothing to do with the game itself, but what he read in a forum post.  See here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=61318.msg1394289#msg1394289

Funny, I see something completely different when I read that thread.

Anway, i mocked up a prototype of a better screen here:

That ought to solve most of the clarity issues with that section, and can't take more than 10-20 minutes to put into the game (after all, the text is already colored depending on the type of stone, and there's aquifer info already).

Nice, and very easy to add too.  I like it.

I remember toady saying that he would implement multi tile trees? Then I faintly remember him talking about how he would use them to build cities in the trees for elves.
I can confirm he did, but I'm not sure where.  Possibly he mentioned it in a DF talk

snip

This might work out to a Toughness of 1200. But, as you can see, our human is much more vulernable near the head areas, and his leg is much more resiliant to blunt hits than slashing hits.

That same reasoning can be applied to strength. Endurence is more of Willpower plus calorie system, so that can be replaced too.

Seriously?  I'm all for complexity in DF, but I don't think I've ever seen such an unnecessarily complicated system.  RPG stats aren't there to recreate reality, just to simulate it

How about both?

Damn that must be it.  Will try pronto.

Thanks for the tip

Necroing this slightly instead of making a new thread to ask some questions.

-Does this fix work with the new version at all?
-Does this require a regen?

I'm asking because I added this to the raws and it doesn't seem to work
