Can't help but wonder, is there some sorta way to prevent two traitors getting the objectives to kill each other?

That does not exactly make a lot of sense, given how both are sent by the same organization, and it turns stealth basically void, since if you kill the other traitor without using clearly traitor items you can just say 'THIS GUY WAS A TRAITOR, SELF DEFENCE!' (and even if you did use them, you can bluff you stole them from the victim).

It also makes the whole traitoring a personal war between two people, leaving not much for non-traitors to do besides arresting the survivor.

Could always be used for plastic surgery on the sly, or underground genetic modification. Or embarrassed fatties.

That's the idea. I also made a network of access points that would make La Resistance blush.

Well, I went through with my shady clinic. Sadly, it's Hijinkstended, so not much use for it, at least yet. But, I have to share it because it's awesome.

Next time I'm on as MD, I am totally turning the Vacant Office and/or Maintenance into a shady 'I don't ask questions' clinic. With the scalpel preferably being a glass shard. Hell, every tool replaced with a ghetto one.

I took the advice you guys gave me a managed to create this essay:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I sense a good grade.

Hey, if your teacher is into Postmodernism, I think you won't have to do anything for a good grade anymore until the end of the year.

The big problem with BS12 is: what adult and sane person would accept money from some shady orginazation to steal something or kill someone and potentially ruin their entire life and job and make a bigass and powerful company hunt them down. Or is every NT employee a hitman? Lings at least make sense in that regard, as they are hitmen and they got on board by absorbing a guy.

It makes sense when you read and think about some of the Syndicate fluff on /tg/, although it's absent from BS12 fluff page (due to some silliness in it). And the fact that Syndicate is, in fact, a catch-all term for a group of loosely allied groups antagonistic to NT.

NanoTrasen is THE corporation, since they own some very important technologies (like the ability to create psionics). Due to their size, they pretty much can do whatever they damn please, the more unacceptable things they do shoved into off-planet research stations such as SS13.

Doing what they damn please and the rapid expansions, however, mean a number of nasty things. First of all, NT can provide resources using less manpower than small companies (e.g. they can readily make mining mechs and borgs, that drastically improve the time it takes to mine, they can generate a whole lot of energy using solars and singulo that may be selled off and so on). Where NT expands, minor entreprizes die off, their employees now having to find a nice cozy place under a bridge or go and die.

NanoTrasen also has access to really damn good firepower, and slightly inaccurate, but cutting-edge teleportation technology. All that with pretty much no way for planetary governments to make sure they won't, I dunno, invade them? That aside, the technologies are really nifty and potentially profitable if reverse-engineered.

There are rivals - although NT is HUGE, there are still other corporations, willing to raise their position by a little assasination here, a little industrial espionage there.

Then there are ideologically-motivated forces, such as Spess PETA/ALF, opposing xeno experimentation, Spess Anarchists are quite likely a possibility, various kooky religions having their own reasons to hate NT.

AND there are mercenaries for any of those, who might be on the run anyway for their own reasons.

So, to recount: the station might be infiltrated by people screwed over by NT expansion, various black ops, corporate commandos (alliteration, yay) and terrorists, pick as many of those as you wish.

Remember that in the grim darkness of the future, there are Genetics and Plastic Surgeons, both of which can make you literally untraceable once you can evade capture.

Is there something about SS13 that automatically makes you a complete psychopath? Just curious because whenever anyone I know talks about (or when I play it for that matter) everyone is nuts. Even if they're trying not to be.

Perception bias. You just don't get epic rounds with normal people, and of course nobody talks about the regular old boring rounds. So the rounds where a couple of people act psychotic are talked/discussed about a lot, though obviously not everyone was acting as crazy or chaotic. Plus people tend to have a few personalities they like to play as, and those people can be eccentric at times. The normal people fade into the background while the interesting/crazy people are more obvious/memorable.

Then again it might be the servers you were on. From what I've heard most of general the servers tend towards general chaos and mayhem, while BS12 and to a lesser extent Urist McStation tend to focus more on the RP, and its own brand of chaos and mayhem (Also I'm certain that other servers focus on RP, I just haven't heard anything about them yet).

Really good point here, the perception bias leading to self-selection bias perpetuating the cycle.

Although I wouldn't exactly fit BS12 and UMcS into the same category of RP-focus. In BS12, every single thing you do is supposed to have an adult, sane, safe and tolerable reason for doing that, and if there isn't one, fun be damned. In UMcS, you are pretty much free to do whatever you want as long as you don't violate the 'Don't be a dick' rule (well, too hard, at least :P), and that lends itself to more eccentric characters.

I dunno I try and be mostly sane in game, and like to think I am... but unlike real life I drink like a fish and smoke non-stop... so yeah there is something about it.  Space sickness maybe.

You got infected by Spess Noir. When you start monologuing uncontrollably, report to the Chemist for your dose of LSD.

Well, first of all, this is Bay12 you are talking to, the community that gleefully builds mechanisms that rely on mermaid sex slaves and drowning the resulting babies. Second, in terms of fun, SS13 is very unstable, so it's either 'OMFG SO EPIC' or '...meh', if you are playing with all-normal crew (BS12, looking at you). If you want to keep a stable, high level of fun, the station has to pretty much become an episode of Sealab in all but name.

GOD I love sociopathic sadistic CMO with a temper that leads to bloodshed. I did ghetto surgery, plain torture, stabbing out his eyes, gender bending, trying to blow him/her up and all with extremely creepy quotes. While doing ghetto surgery and screwing up: "This is just like Operation. With consequences."

I... think I like you. Well, at least as Maximilian Kepplinger, although he's more of a SCIENCE!!! guy with a side of extremely weird. In fact, in the previous cult round people thought he was a cultist even though he wasn't, he just was treating surgery on the humanized monkeys as one part experiment, one part modern art. Oh, and the entire floor of the Operating Theatre, the room leading to it, and the medicine storage were painted with blood. Although I admit to being slightly inspired by a certain character

Life Advice / Re: Psychology, thought, and the nature of emotion
« on: March 23, 2013, 05:26:28 pm »
Emotions are subtle bastards. There are actually two types of emotions that are paired together, those that you experience consciously and those you kind of feel, unconscious ones. The latter act as what I suppose could be described as colored lenses, and are caused by neurotransmitter levels and limbic system activity, while the latter are more related to possibly prefrontal cortex, generally the evolutionarily younger parts that correspond to higher-level, conscious activity.

Depression, for instance, impairs your ability to perceive things positively, leading to negative, conscious thoughts, which, on closer examination are quite irrational if you notice how biased towards negativity they are. But guess what, a depressive person who would notice that would get even more depressed once he realized it instead of doing anything to fix the problem, because he filters out most non-negative interpretations.

Interestingly, it appears that depressed or healthily sad people tend to have a better memory scores than the same people when they're happy.

Sadness and anger also tend to be somehow entangled with each other, with sadness replacing anger while the object of anger cannot be subjected to agression and anger replacing sadness when someone is blamed for causing it. It might be that sadness is anger redirected onto oneself.

I suppose conscious control over emotions is hardly anomalous, given how willing your body into doing things seems perfectly in character for human physiology (placebos, nocebos, I choose you!). On the other hand, it might be less control and more conscious repression, and repression can surface at the perfectly wrong moment to bite you in the ass.

Also, I found out exactly HOW OP tasers were.

*points to the rant ~10 pages earlier.

But, not the point of the post. When checking out Space Asshole song someone linked on the server yesterday, I came across something really fucking epic that could very well be an intro for SS13:

Heh, I enjoyed playing chef last round. Especially after some guy died because of my food, somehow, and the CMO got a grudge against me for the two roboburgers that randomly appeared in my kitchen. Managed to save one of them and grinded it, then kept it in my box. But honestly, it's pretty hilarious when you've got the CMO constantly at your kitchen "desk" scanning your food, along with the detective and the captain. Oh, and "THE BURGERS HAVE PEPPER SPRAY IN THEM! YOU MONSTER!". We have to explain to the captain that I just injected them with hot sauce.

Oh, so you can inject things into food? My Villainorologist sense likes this so much. So does my Mad Scientist sense. So, if you'll excuse me MWAHAHAHA! MWAHA- MWAHAHAHAHA!
