OK, now I've got what must be the most promising character in this latest splurge of crawl playing.  Started out as a gladiator, but he found a lot of spellbooks with some powerful but low-level spells, and has been having a go at being a hybrid spellcaster.  And he got the Tukima spellbook, which is pretty over-powered TBH.

I feel like he's doing pretty well.  However, I kind of worry that his skills are a bit sprawled out, not specialized enough.  Still, no particular reason to be concerned I guess.  I figure I will probably clean out the orc halls and then maybe go to the bottom of the lair.  Any advice on how to develop this guy?

Yep, those ghosts suck.  I think in terms of pure hatred towards NPCs, the order goes something like:

1) Named spellcasters (inc. Sigmund, etc.)
2) Ghosts
3) Orc priests

Well Psyche was no big deal, but I got shanked by a fucking death yak moments later.  What the hell was a death yak doing on D8 anyway?  It was guarding the lair entrance apparently.  :(

Well, I guess I will go storming in, and if she manages to haste herself I will go beserk on her.   >:(

So I have another promising badass character here, and right now he is behind a door, on the other side of which is Psyche (she has not "woken up").  Can anyone tell me whether or not, if I go through that door, the crazy hoer is going to destroy me, or if I can take her out?  I did just manage to end Erolcha, through the use of my amulet of rage. ;)

Whats all this early tester business, eh?  Aren't we all just beta testers?  Er, no, alpha testers?   ;D

I am sure mercenaries will have their place sooner or later.  However, a dwarf outpost would have to be nuts to hire people like this.  I mean, just image: you have this huge fortress full of golden statues, gems, masterwork weapons and armor, and you bring in a band of armed warriors to protect you for a few dwarfbucks each week?  Bad bad idea...

Cave crocs should be deadly of course, but killing 20 out of 40 beak dogs does not sound right somehow.  Anything big enough for a goblin to ride on it should have a huge beak about twice the size of my hand.  Even beaks on real-life raptors are extremely powerful, so imagine one about 5 times this size, on a creature the size of a St.Bernard or larger.

But where is the "mysterious substance"?

I am pretty sure they can, at least it seems that this feature was described in conjunction with them...  (see the HTML chose your own adventure Toady made)

My favorite tactic with that spell (for early level necros) is to carry a skeleton downstairs with me, drop it and animate.  :)

Will some beastmen types be edible by dwarves or humans?  After all, a cave fish man is basically just a giant cave fish with arms and legs... right?

yum yum

Come on guys, if you play draconian just suck it up and play the cards you're dealt.  What's all this about player gen scumming and all that?

OK, I'll admit that being a fire elementalist who turns out to be an ice draconian probably sucks though.

Right now I am playing with a Draconian earth elementalist that turned out to be a mottled draconian.  Resistance sucks, but the breath weapon is sweet.  Also it seems there are no penalties to any spellcasting skills and fire is 80.  So it's all good.  I also got an amulet of the gourmand, so I can spew out napalm at will.  I hope I can get the spellbook with lava bolt in it eventually... though I guess if I find the ones with iron bolt/crystal spear that won't be so important.  Well, any spell that lets me lev up my fire will be good, so that when the time comes I can summon fire OR earth elementals.  I'll just statue form and let my lackeys do the work.

BTW, is Sif Muna or Vehumet better for this class?

No, don't do it.  The kind of mutations you get from radiation seem to generally be very bad.  (I THINK this is the case; drinking a potion of mutation seems work differently)  It would be pretty much suicidal to use that axe for very long, though I guess if you remembered to unequip it might be useable.  But still not worth buying.

Unless you want to apply the "Losing is fun!" principal to Crawl/SS, in which case you'd probably come to a very hilarious end.

Cthulu Jr died (or rests beneath the waves) due to having crap defense and inadequate damage dealing capabilities.  It seems summoning alone just can't cut it, although it is a lot of fun to watch it in action. :)
