I'd imagine pigs and boars evolved flat snouts over a much larger time span than dog breeds, allowing them to also evolve other traits that make having a flat snout not as dangerous, whereas artificial breeding just caused dogs to have a flat snout without any of the other traits that make that feasible. I'm just guessing though, I really don't know much about dog breeding and even less about pigs.

There's plenty of dog breeds that have problems due to traits that were intentionally bred into them. Most toy dog breeds can't give natural birth or they'd shatter their pelvis, IIRC.

General Discussion / Re: The Dream Thread

I had a dream that I was playing Kerbal Space Program, flying a space plane on the Mun, except it's really mountainous and has an atmosphere for some reason. While following a canyon I suddenly notice smoke on the horizon. Like a lot, so much that it rises over mountains and blocks out the stars. It turns out that about a quarter of the Mun's surface is on fire, but I'm still on the wrong side of the mountains so I can't see what's burning. I try to do a retrograde burn in order to land and see what's up, but the atmosphere makes that whole "spin 180 degrees without losing velocity" thing difficult. It appears I'm safe for a second, but then the cockpit boops the side of the mountain a bit too hard. My kerbal avatar is killed instantly, while my copilot is somehow thrown clear... directly into the canyon. At that point I ragequit.

Wouldn't it make more sense to do some math to aim the gun in code (via an animation offset or just rotating the entire character) rather than manually tweaking the model in the editor?

Another alternate is to make it so that during the firing animation they bring the weapon closer to their center of mass, so it's more of a straight line from the center of the character to the mouse cursor.

I do quite like blueprints! I created a third-person character that feels pretty good to control, in about half the time it would have taken in Unity. A lot of the math and physics has already been figured out and put in the CharacterMovement component, which saves time on implementing (for example) air control. It's pretty easy, like Game Maker on steroids.

One thing I don't like is that a blank UE4 project (with "Scalable 2d/3d" picked) seems to automatically turn on a lot of graphics options that just slow the game down without good reason; SSAO, reflection passes, fog, bloom etc. PC master race yadda yadda whatever, I believe there's value in making games performant across a wide range of devices, my little ol' laptop included, and I'd rather turn on these options as I decide I need them rather than having them all on from the start. Still, that's only a small annoyance compared to the time saved and features offered.

New chocolate creamer I bought has virtually no effect on my coffee, besides changing the color. I put pretty hefty amounts in too, compared to the serving size and how much plain half-and-half I normally use.

I took a sip of just the creamer and it's one of the sweetest things I've ever tasted. Pretty thick too, like pancake syrup.

Even sweets don't want to work right for me anymore.

I'm going to try and learn UE4, as much as one person can learn such a complicated tool.

Shortly after installation I'm already very excited by the node-based shader editor, compared to Unity's "fuck you, figure it out yourself" approach to custom shaders. I also like the idea of a timeline-based cutscene editor, a feature which is only just now coming to Unity.

I am less excited by Visual Studio being the default code editor. Every past attempt to use Visual Studio (or any modern Microsoft product, for that matter) has been about as quick and painless as a trip to an unholy hybrid of the DMV, the dentist's, and the principal's office. For all of MonoDevelop's shortcomings it never behaved like a clingy ex-girlfriend, telling me about expired licenses and TeamShare every time I come around.

What do people use the Insert button/function for? I've only ever experienced it as an inconvenience when I accidentally turn it on.

Not being able to shoot through a gate that you clearly could

Pretty self-explanatory. I hate it when an arrow or bullet bounces off the air between the bars in a door. Happens a lot in ye olde fantasy games.

Sonic Adventure.

The difference between Sonic Adventure and a bad game is the difference between a cult classic B-movie and a bad film. SA's flaws, both technical and artistic, contribute something irreplaceable to the overall experience. They hadn't quite figured out 3D games yet, but they were trying so hard. It's cute, for lack of a better word. The pointless overworld sections, glitchy collision, spastic cutscenes and catchy but often unfitting soundtrack all speak about a time when shit wasn't quite figured out yet, so they just threw things at a wall to see what would stick.

Compare Sonic Boom. Sonic Boom doesn't have any soul. It's the default game of our time, open world + rpg elements + (third genre of your choosing). It's not endearing or funny in its failures, it's just kind of pathetic. That's an actually bad game; contrast with the above.

I was mildly congested when I started work. Then somebody bought about half the garden section in one go, setting off the worst allergy fit since before high school. And set all their shit on the belt despite insisting that they please not, leaving dirt, small rocks and dead plant parts all over the area.

I hope their terrible garden dies and catches fire. Most of the plants people buy here are wilting already anyway.

I've got queasy stomach and sore throat. All the creamy, sweet drinks that would soothe my sore throat would probably mess up my guts as well. Blegh. At least tomorrow I am truly off from everything, no school or work.

Just finished NGE series. It was okay, but then postmodernism came along and ruined the ending. Screw you postmodernism. Should I watch the movie or is that also bad?

If you don't like the weird, there's the Rebuild of Evangelion series which removes all the most controversial stuff, while adding in a good deal of shounen tropes that Evangelion had in lesser quantities. More fanservice, more action, happier endings, so on. They aren't bad flicks, if you want to see some more/different Evangelion.

Without spoiling too much though, the third movie is kind of a left turn. Not on par with the TV ending or EOE, but still a pretty radical departure in tone from the first two.

The new online learning system that everybody prefers so much to the old one, is broken the day I have two assignments due on it.

As visually unappealing as the old system was, it was never totally offline and unreachable at any point.
