General Discussion / Re: Railgun and Spirituality Discussion
« on: January 01, 2020, 11:49:46 am »
I've begun reading the Bible. I don't own my own so I'm reading those provided by the house I'm staying at, which are in contemporary English. I've only read the Bible very briefly previous times, but I honestly miss the more difficult language. Having all the context and references to past passages explained by footnotes, it's not like the story makes any more or less sense to me as a linear story.

So far, what I've gotten from it is that Jacob did wrong and made out like a bandit because God liked him better than Esau for some reason, and the women introduced thus far are generally catty or otherwise make life miserable for the families they're introduced to. I'm up to Genesis 37 so far.

Is there something I'm missing in locations being named after people, or vice-versa? Practically any time anybody is born it mentions that the name sounds like some Hebrew word, is something similar happening with people and place names?

General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.

I'm tired of being told by people that I'm grieving for myself incorrectly, that the things I'm upset about are wrong and that expressing my sadness is bad and wrong, either directly by being commanded (not asked, not encouraged, commanded) to smile/cheer up/stop crying/calm down, or just by being made to feel that my emotions are a burden. Everybody else in the world gets to throw a fit and be a shitty person all day because they couldn't find something at the store; my life might be changed forever and I have to keep it all inside because other people can't deal with it.

Fuel is very heavy. Besides the cockpit and other crew areas, fuel is easily the heaviest part of any vehicle in stock KSP. For planes, adding fuel is often a losing game unless you also add a bigger engine or more engines, which means more fuel tanks due to the way parts are attached, so on.

I made it to the north pole of Kerbin and back with just two mk1 fuel tanks and the "Wheelsey" engine, got back with around 3/4ths of my fuel left over. I'm curious how far you were trying to fly if you needed more fuel than that.

The very first cockpit has a strong enough reaction wheel to keep most small rockets straight. I just turn on SAS and let the game keep the rocket straight for me. As soon as I researched vectoring engines there was basically no reason to use solid rocket boosters ever again, and I haven't had a rocket tip over since. Aerodynamics are tricky, especially as you lose stages and fuel (thus changing the center of mass) so unless you actually want your rocket to stay in the atmosphere for a long time I wouldn't bother.

Airplanes are harder than rockets but not that hard. The main thing is having enough wing area, having large enough control surfaces, and keeping the center of lift just barely behind the center of mass.

I only suggest this because it sounds like you haven't, but I recommend just looking up a guide instead of directly asking people. I wouldn't have gotten anywhere without a bunch of diagrams and videos explaining how to make things.

Even with a rocket weighted to be heavier on the bottom,

If the center of mass is close to the center of thrust (i.e. where the engines are) then that just makes it more unstable in flight. If it tips over even a tiny bit, the thrust from the engine will put a lot of torque onto the center of mass, causing it to tip and somersault out of control.

I bought myself Kerbal Space Program two days ago. Since then, I already accrued 23 hours of playtime. That's 12 hours a day, sitting in my chair and hunching over my laptop. I feel awful, physically and mentally.

I mean, random turning on the runway is still an issue, but landing works just fine now. I haven't tested extensively, but wheels have only given me issues when driving a car with physics warp on.

I took one of the "get crew reports at these locations" contracts. The three spots were all on the surface, extremely close to the Space Center. It would have been economical to just send a Kerbal on foot, but that would take forever. Landing a plane would take even longer than walking, and a rocket is both wasteful and imprecise.

Thus, Billy the Science Jetcar was born. Six steerable landing wheels, two jet engines, and no brakes.

It got a respectable speed of 30m/s and handled the bumpy ground surprisingly well with SAS on. I soon realized however that I would have to stop this thing eventually, and the only thing I could figure was a hard right.

The entire thing rolled and blew up.

How fast were you going? Sounds like you were going too fast for the landing gear to handle the impact force. You should also be slightly pitched up when you make contact with the ground instead of flat, so as to not overstress the forward wheel(s) or even flip forward over them.

I wasn't looking at the moment of impact, but I'm guessing it was between 100 and 200 meters per second. Also, using the very cheapest tier 1 plane parts, so the landing gear wasn't that great.

After much tweaking and reloading, I finally built an atmospheric plane for use in Kerbin-bound science. I decided to be daring and actually land the plane like a plane, as opposed to killing its horizontal speed and using parachutes.

It seems like I'm about to touch the ground evenly and coast to a stop, but 9/10ths of my plane explodes on contact. All that's left is the cockpit, elevators and a single wheel, skidding along the ground like a mecha unicycle.

Valentina (somehow) survived, but the loss of the plane more than negated the gains from that contract. So essentially, I did that mission at a loss and didn't even get to land the plane.

Collosal entertainment failures really have an "it's the journey, not the destination" thing about them. I don't care enough about Cats to ever watch it unless somebody else is paying, but man am I gladdened for what a funny story it's made.

Edit: Just kidding, it's still playing so I want to see it tomorrow. I hope my theater still has the unfinished cut.

Wait, that was Donnie Yen, as in Ip Man? That's awesome! I didn't know he acted in American stuff.

I think I'm a bit depressed :(

If it makes you feel any better, your info, PMs and advice have helped me feel a lot better throughout my treatment. I don't fully understand your troubles with finding a job just because I don't know your story, but you're still helping at least one person even if you're not doing traditional doctoring.

God, gamers are impatient nowadays. I remember leaving a demo downloading overnight--and checking it the next morning to find it still not done. Come home from school and somebody had inadvertantly closed it, or killed the connection, or nuked the entire computer by downloading a virus... Which would invariably be blamed on me.

Oh, you have to wait one hour for a game to install? Go watch a movie or something. I would have killed to have an entire game in one hour basically at any point before the present day.

I'm tired of smokers in my life whining about the inconveniences of their habit. You wanted to look cool or fit in or whatever you thought smoking would get you. Nobody else wants to breathe in your money wasting, so either quit or nut up and stand 10 feet from the entrance like a considerate adult.
