X-Com: Terror from the Deep. I love the hell out of this game. It's creepy, it's dark, it's complex, and it stays true to the original X-Com. It's been rumoured that the easiest difficulty is harder than Superhuman on the original, and with good reason: I've never gotten farther than Deep Ones before my fledgling base is wiped out entirely. Keep in mind, I'm no good at the original either.

Any multiplayer strategy game, too. I'm an okay player against the computer, but the GOTTA GO FAST mentality of multiplayer ruins the entire thing for me.

Dwarf Fortress, of course :P

Also, text adventures of any description. I love the entire genre, but I have no mind for complex puzzles. The one at the end of A Mind Forever Voyaging, probably one of the tamest I've seen, still managed to stump me completely.

You punch the lasher in the head, bruising the skull and knocking him unconscious!
You drag the lasher to jail!
You collect the live bounty.

I had my netbook off to the side while I was playing a game on the desktop so I could keep an eye on a chatroom. Something caught my attention on the netbook, and I kept holding down the 'W' key while was looking at it. I looked back and found that I was dead, having walked off the edge of a platform to my death below.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most Awkward Fortress Death

Just remembered something that happened a few days ago.

My fort was doing okay, I had ~16 dwarves and a pretty decent economy going when a necromancer came. Since I had no military, I forbade the door leading outside, intending to wait out the siege until I had a few iron swords.

I completely forgot about the wide-open, undefended 3x3 entrance I made for wagons to come in.

I completely forgot to set up farms and stills once. Never even crossed my mind. I had two dining rooms, 15+ apartments, and even got a fey mood. Then all of the original seven died of thirst pretty close to the same time.

For whatever reason, cloud cars have about 12 seconds of fight left in them after they lose all their health. I tried to bail out, but I misjudged and ended up dying on impact.

What even is it with hyenas lately? They've been kicking my ass even with a companion or two.

DF General Discussion / Favorite version of the circus? (!!SPOILERS!!)
« on: December 04, 2012, 11:23:40 pm »
Simply put, what is your favorite version of DF's most !!FUN!! feature, the circus and it's attendant clowns?

Personally, I'm rather fond of the "Dug too deep" version. I love how creepy and mysterious it is. Playing the old version spoiler-free (I started with DF2012 and then tried 23a), I didn't realize what had happened until a good 15 times reading the message, I was so surprised. In the interest of realism, I know that it doesn't work well for a simulationist game like DF, but this left me with such a creepy vibe that I still get chills thinking about it.

The fourth wall is almost completely opaque in DF, and then suddenly you're directly addressed by the game itself, asking you to find out the truth of your fort's fate. It's creepy as all getout and I love it.

DF General Discussion / Re: Races Currency

I imagine dwarves are good enough with metal to create a coin made from certain percentages of metals. For example, Durpurpelsor makes coins with 90% gold, 7% copper and 3% brass, while Amost Tomud makes them with 94% gold and 6% tin. That way, in case of a serious forgery, they can melt the coins down to determine their authenticity.

Not represented in gameplay of course, but that makes sense to me.
