I've always wanted to get into Roguelikes, but every time I download DOS and open it up, I see that bloody command line and just shut down mentally. Makes me feel like such a lazy bum but I always end up closing it after a minute or two of tinkering.

Nethack doesn't require DOSBox, and IMO it's one of the best "traditional" roguelikes I've ever played. There's even an official graphical version that looks quite nice, too.

DF General Discussion / Re: What turns you off about DF?
« on: November 17, 2012, 01:48:37 am »
I'm only really turned off by Fortress mode. The thing that turns me off most is the massive complexity. It feels like I'm learning to play five really complicated and difficult games at once, instead of one. I could understand Nethack, XCom or almost any other game just by playing naturally for a while; I have to check the wiki every 10 minutes playing Fortress mode for relatively simple things, like which workshop can make what items from which materials. I hope that eventually DF will evolve to a point where the wiki can truly be a helpful reference rather than a necessary gameplay resource.

I really like Adventure mode. The gameplay is complex enough to stand out, but not so complex that it feels weighed down by it. The controls make logical sense, too. (L)ooking at someone and checking their (d)escription lets you check their health status, for example.

So, he's still alive? Ha! That's an interesting story. How did the battle go, exactly? What broke your man's spine? How did you escape? Did you kill him? If you are, then are you just .. rolling around on the ground biting people?

I was pretty much doomed, because I still hadn't realized that halberds used the Axedwarf skill instead of Speardwarf. I was on equal footing with Crazedmachines as far as speed went, but he got lucky and stabbed my leg. After that he started stabbing me in the chest, tearing apart the upper spine's nervous tissue after a few blows.

As to my escape, I had a trio of new companions with me who managed to keep him off while I crawled back upstairs (we were in the sewers). After I had crawled a few rooms away I passed out from the pain. Only one of my companion found me afterwards, so I assume that the rest died so that I could escape. ;_;7

I retired him after I had escaped aboveground. I grew way too attached to him to let him die, especially with a name like "Tosid Spearpriests the Fatal Fist of Spines". Slada Cookshark the Creepy Recreations also deserves an honorable mention for saving my life twice during the fateful gobbo ambush.

Sadly, he can only attack by throwing (which somehow doesn't require the use of your arms) or biting. He is doomed to roll in the dirt for eternity, while the madman who crippled him laughs from the sewers below. Someday, I will avenge him...

I've been ambushed by goblins before. (At least seven, never eleven, yet.) Since I was a dumdum, and had average social awareness, my party of two swordsmen didn't stand a chance. When they had died, I went toe to toe with the goblins, occasionally getting in a leg shot, or chopping off a hand. Luckily, I came out on top, having used a silver short sword, and a bronze shield. My character was practically -drenched- in blood. The battleground was littered with teeth, weapons, severed limbs, and fingers. (Yes, fingers.) On the final goblin, I chopped off his foot, slashed out his teeth, stabbed him in both eyes, and stomped out his head. However, on my trip back to town to rest until dawn, I was attacked by bogeymen. I escaped, but had my arm broken, several bruises, missing teeth, and more that I hardly remember. I died on a quest to kill some bandits. (I had no armor. That's what makes this spectacular. :D)

I think the size of goblin ambushes scales with your fame and how many companions you have. That particular ambush had roughly 25 goblins in it, for 12 people including myself. I'd been doing relatively well for myself, since I was on my second quest for the lord of the civ.

Unfortunately, this second quest ended with my character being crippled for the rest of his life, with his upper spine broken. Can't stand or grasp anything at all, and would have suffocated had it not been for his vampire status. I like to think that Onad Crazedmachines (the elf who crippled me) was some kind of mad steampunk scientist, and I was being sent to kill him before he built an army of bronze collosi.

I was ambushed by goblins, who immediately murdered all 11 of my companions without much resistance. Luckily, I was a vampire dwarf, which meant I went in to a martial trance on top of my strength boost from being a vamp.

After I realized that I was pretty much invincible as long as I had enemies to kill, I started biting throats and caving heads in with my shield. I found out afterwards that halberds actually use the Axedwarf skill instead of Speardwarf, so I was fighting with a weapon I didn't even know how to use and I still owned every single gobbo.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: First ever pic of DF ocean floor?
« on: November 15, 2012, 12:45:33 am »
If you get yourself a vampire adventurer, you should be able to survive underwater, right? That means you can probably survive at the bottom of the ocean too.

Correct-o. Vampires do not need to breathe, thus they could survive at the bottom of the ocean assuming that was the only issue. I don't know much about swimming since I generally avoid it.

In combat with armed opponents, you always want to go for the legs. If you can get their artery, fracture the bone or even sever one of their legs, you'll have a massive advantage as they soon suffer from extreme pain and blood loss.

Have you tried telling her that you did, infact, tell her last week, at 2pm or so, on tuesday? (insert correct date here).

Falls under "any point I have to make", which means it doesn't matter because she's infinitely right forever.

[Last week]
Me: Hey mum, can I go to this [group event] at [location]? It's going to be in broad daylight, and we're going to be pretty far from the [something dangerous]. [Insert responsible adult] is even going to be there to keep an eye on us.

Mom: Where'd you say it was gonna be?

Me: Oh, [location], right around [landmark].

Mom: Oh, okay.

Quote
[The next week]
Me: Hey, Mom, [event]'s today, just remindin-

Mom: Well you never told me where it was going to be, and I don't know who's going to be there, and I don't know where you're going to be, or how close to the [dangerous thing] it is!

Me: But I told you last week-

Mom: YOU'RE NOT GOING.

Mum always conveniently "forgets" anything that has to do with me being out of sight for a few hours. And anytime I make a fuss, I'm "just being pissy" and she immediately ignores any point that I have to make. I'm going to graduate high school in less than two years, but I feel less like I'm going to leave the house than ever.

I thought it would be a good idea to give my human adventurer the ability to hurl fireballs, directly copypasta'd from the fire imp's raws. Somehow, it didn't occur to me that OTHER humans would have this ability as well... as in, all 8 humans in a bandit camp...

The enemy had just snatched our flag and were fleeing in their 'Hog. I ran through the teleporter to try and put myself between them and their base. They were going to pass me in about 3 seconds, so I grabbed the Fuel Rod Gun nearby and blasted away. The first shot flipped their Warthog instantly, crushing the driver as it turned over. The passenger kept running though, so I had to chase him down. Eventually, I recaptured our flag right on the doorstep of the enemy base.

Yeah, i'm aware of that, but The Curious Underground Structure is a specific map feature deliberately generated by the game. I'm trying to avoid spoilers, so look it up on the wiki if you want to see what I mean.

I thought all candy spires led to those? I haven't played fort mode in a long time.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Yay, Killed Me First Vampire.
« on: November 12, 2012, 03:25:25 am »
I have never had myself or a companion kill a vampire. They're always been stabbed to death by the 7+ peasants surrounding them as soon as I called them out. Interestingly enough, one of them was actually a lord in a castle, so this unarmed old man ended up being killed by his own bodyguard of 4 elite soldiers.

WHY ARE THERE BEARS ON THE 6,000 STEPS. I DON'T REMEMBER SEEING ANY BEARS LAST PLAYTHROUGH HERE.

I do believe you have the wrong subforum kind sir.

If I remember, in an old thread somebody generated a candy spire that rose straight out of the ground and ~2000 z-levels in to the sky. 5 FPS of course, but that's all I can think of if you're having such bad luck finding it yourself.
