DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Trapping foreign traders

Try this: Let them enter your depot and then wall them in there with only a one tile wide exit. Place a door blocking it and a cage trap immediately beyond that. Lock the door and wait until they go insane. When they do they become hostile and are now affected by traps. So, open the door and let them get stuck in their cage.

Two problems with this. First, you will only have insane captives, but you might not mind this. Second, if there are guards with them, the guards will likely kill them before you trap them. I have not yet seen a guard stay there so long that he goes insane, though I guess it could happen.

If this is a real Iron Dwarf challenge, you need to specify something to make it difficult, and with everyone on a similar footing. Something like Sinister maps only. Oh, and I suggest allowing no INI mods. My computer is pretty slow, but that feels like cheating.

I think in real life bolts are much better at piercing plate than spears. Higher kinetic energy over lower area and all.

Is this forum censored? Is that why you don't just say fuck when you mean fuck?

I have this problem too. They will pick up a lot of the stuff, but I will have a few items that never get touched. I don't know why.

Idiot Marksdwarves who decide to be Hammerdwarves when I have their squad posted out by the woods to keep the elephants away from my wood cutters.

Yes, from skydiving type altitudes. From five stories, however, it will save your life.

Oh, and by engraved wall did the OP mean a fortified wall?

Supposedly, once you hit magma the regular metalsmith's forge isn't good enough. He was waiting for you to build a magma forge.

Thanks, this explains it. This damn execution chamber has been more trouble than it's worth. First time I tried to move some elephants into the mechanism-connected cage and they got away during transit... into a few rows of traps luckily.

Hopefully I can get this to work.

I had the bright idea of making an execution chamber. I stick a cage with any captured enemy (or elephant) in a room with a drawbridge that goes up to lock them in. I then pull a lever to open the cage and have my marksdwarf plug them through fortifications as you see below.

The problem is that the marksdwarf doesn't do anything. He has a crossbow and a quiver full of bolts, but he doesn't shoot. In the image there is a 1x1 drawbridge to the left of the goblin and 2 squares of fortifications between him and my marksdwarf.

Can dwarves only shoot one way through fortifications? Maybe I built it wrong. Now I can't even tell my marksdwarf to go anywhere else as he no longer responds to set points. He definitely sees the goblin, he just doesn't know what to do with it. What is wrong here?

Yup, I only tell them to transfer when the two cages are built adjacent. As I said in my earlier post though, they still screw it up. Also, I believe an animal will have the plus sign by its name if it has been assigned to the cage but not yet transferred, as well as those who are already there.

My animal handler is an idiot. I build two cages with elephants perfectly adjacent to each other and tell him to move one elephant to the other cage. What does he do? He gets third cage, brings it over, puts the elephant in that, brings it back to a stockpile, then frees the elephant. Imbecile.

My animal handler is just dabbling, so maybe that has something to do with it. All of my competent handlers met terrible ends trying this.

Damn, that is what I was afraid of. It will make the process much more of a pain and take a great deal longer.

Oh, and is a mechanism attached to a cage a one time thing or can you open and close the cage with the mechanism?
