Urist McHamlet has been struck with melancholy.
Urist McHamlet has gone stark raving mad?

^^ Not if the astronaut has a gun.

It largely depends on what armor the enemy is wearing. A European broadsword would go right through a fully armored samurai and out the other side (this vulnerability to stabbing weapons is one reason why the Yari i.e. spear was popular with the peasants) but a katana would go through many types of European armor like nobodies business.

As for spears in fantasy the main reason we don't see much of them is because they don't make good weapons for climatic duels. Legend of The Five Rings uses yari though, there are orcs using spears/pikes in LotR, and the Drasnians in the Belgariad are famous for their pikemen.

Truly we live in a golden age of dwarfdom.

Also, there is no real reason why dwarves shouldn't be able to make a steam engine. Dwarven steampunk or bust!

Well I started by reading stories like Headshoots. Then I started playing, mostly I asked my brother whenever I had questions and used the wiki otherwise alternately, "I wonder what happens if..." "Your settlement has crumbled to it's end.". (Note: I started out by playing 40d and was fully equipped when I switched to 2010.)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven justice.
« on: March 31, 2012, 10:34:51 am »
So I found my first vampire, caught the little err... "darling" sucking one of my carpenters dry, and he finished before I could save the poor dwarf. So I locked the vamp in his room and installed a chair so that he could eternally look after my fort, well the dwarves eventually found the body and when they did I convicted the vamp. My question is if I appoint a law-man, will he care about the locked door in his pursuit of great justice? Or will he kindly leave the prisoner alone as long as the door is locked?

On a totally unrelated note, my methods of vampire detection have recently improved.

Or... Maybe... He comes from an alternate dimension! On a quest to rid the multiverse of all other versions of himself!

Or he could be, you know, a bug. But that would be way less fun.

Clearly he is a time traveler.

I think the REAL thing to do now, is to start seeing how DWARF we can mess with the worlds. raising and mucking with the variables...

I remember one early 40d World I genned where I  did "Something" that caused every single mountain range in the world to be "Sinister"

Well, if we're going to do "Weird things I genned in 40d" I think my "ice age" map is a strong contender. I made a couple of changes to the parameters but the main change was to lower minimum and maximum temp, in an ill conceived attempt at an ice planet. The result was... anomalous to say the least. Vast expanses of ice, tundra and mountains, deathly cold, but amongst the tundra there were islands of normal terrain, burning. The humans and elves lived in the islands of fire while the dwarves and goblins lived in the mountains of ice. !!Fun!! fact, when DF says it's "Burning" hot, it means it literally.

On topic, my worlds usually bomb out around ~700 at which point my computer has a nervous break down. Note that this is on my Mac with 4GB of ram, haven't tried on Windows yet.
