DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What to do with Necromancer Mayor?
« on: June 14, 2020, 07:09:21 pm »
I discovered rather dramatically that 47.04 necromancers are very good at killing themselves and those around them. After a messy battle against two elf armies, my necromancer king decided to ignore his burrow restriction and take a stroll through the battlefield. Shocked by the unfamiliar carnage and sunlight, he started reanimating corpses left and right until some intelligent undead chased him down and beat him to death with his own crossbow. It was fantastic.

I have one necromancer left. One the one hand, I would like to keep him around for necromantic experimentation and all-around fun. So I should lock him in a room with a window. If I don't lock him up, then he's likely to wander onto some future battlefield and cause another ruckus.

On the other hand, the necromancer is also the mayor. So if I lock him away, then unhappy dwarves won't benefit from his excellent social skills. And they may waste time trying to go complain to him when he's unavailable.

What do you advise?

DF Suggestions / Shooting at Flying Mounts
« on: June 13, 2020, 01:26:31 pm »
This is halfway between a bug and a suggestion. I've got two elf civilizations at war with me, and in sieges the leaders always ride giant birds. They aren't particularly dangerous. They mostly just buzz around with the flyer AI and cause job cancellation unless I've burrowed my civilians. My marksdwarves spray bolts into the air and eventually bring them down. It's a fun battle to imagine.

My complaint is that my marksdwarves always hit the rider and miss the mount. They won't start injuring the mount until the rider dies.
1) This makes no sense in terms of realism. If an elf is overhead riding a cardinal that's fifty times larger than an eagle, then it should be nearly impossible to shoot the elf and miss the bird.
2) Even if my marksdwarves could shoot the rider, I don't want them to. The giant bird is far more of a nuisance and threat than its rider. I want the giant birds injured and on the ground ASAP to face my melee dwarves. It takes a lot of time and bolts to kill the rider first when the mount is zooming around 10z levels overhead.

This is probably also true of non-flying mounts. The chance of hitting the rider vs mount should probably be based on the ratio of their body sizes. But for flying mounts above the z-level of the shooter, the mount should almost always get hit first.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Unkillable Echidna Corpse
« on: June 12, 2020, 12:50:52 pm »
Some invading elves killed a cute little wild echidna that had been hanging around outside the fort. Then the necromancer king reanimated him. Now there are a dozen elite soldiers who pound day and night on this little undead soccer ball that won't die.

It's not a big problem. The soldiers are getting awesome XP, and I can eventually kill the echidna with DFHack. I just want to know why it can absorb limitless damage.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Animals on Defense in Missions
« on: June 09, 2020, 02:30:38 am »
The forest retreat Diamondcoasts has lots of animals:
Giant Dingoes
Giant Cougars
Giant Chipmonks
Grizzly Bears
Horses
Unicorns
Giant Deer, and
Giant Black Bears.

I sent 30 dwarves there on a pillage mission. They killed several historical figures, which is normal on first contact with a site. They also fought and killed the grizzly bears. Just the grizzly bears.

In my previous 44.04 game, missions against elf sites was a major PITA because all their animals fought on defense. There was no way to send dwarves toe-to-toe against dozens of giant animals, so the solution was to steal all the livestock with raid missions before attacking with pillage missions. It was a simple plan in theory, but it became very tedious to dispose of dozens upon dozens of stolen animals.

The rules have changed. In my 47.04 game, the animals at elf sites haven't fought on defense---until now. So it becomes important to know when the animals will fight and when they won't. My theory is that the grizzly bears were the only ones to fight because they were the only war-trainable animals at the site. But I'm curious to know if others have experimented with missions and found more subtleties to the rule.

Edit: Another mission came back with confusing data. The dwarves had to fight a named giant dingo, a named yak bull, a named black bear, and an unnamed grizzly bear and horse. I guess I should be glad that they didn't have to fight the giant cougars.

DF Suggestions / Display Furniture Tweak
« on: June 08, 2020, 03:10:37 pm »
I like putting valuable artifacts on display, to tempt thieves and keep my dwarves happy. I also like to write and steal books. Hundreds of books.

So when I try to put the latest artifact weapon or bracelet onto a pedestal, the menu is flooded with those hundreds of books. Finding the correct trinket has become quite a chore. So it would be great if the menu for adding items to display furniture either 1) had a search feature, or 2) separated books from other artifacts.

DF Gameplay Questions / Intralibrary Loan
« on: May 31, 2020, 07:33:33 pm »
My goal is to build a library with knowledge of all the topics. To speed things along, I want to steal books from other sites. There are five great libraries in my world, and two of them are within my civilization. So how do I get copies of those books into my library?

Here are the options I see:
1. Wait for the caravan to bring the books I want. This could take a long time.
2. Civil war. Considered immoral and buggy.
3. Retire the fortress and steal books as an adventurer. Would this start a civil war?
4. Retire the fortress. Start a fortress in the other dwarf civ. Steal the books. Unretire the original fortress. Steal the books.

DF Gameplay Questions / Scholars, Books, Knowledge, and Topics
« on: May 24, 2020, 10:30:16 pm »
A scholar ponders and discusses. Eventually he writes a book. That book may represent an advance on a specific topic.

So is there any topic-advancement benefit to having scholars read books? Or do scholars only write the books based on their discussions, thoughts, and experiences?

Suppose that I go raiding and steal lots of books from my neighbors. The knowledge is in the books. My library is smarter. But is there any reason for my scholars to read the books?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Strange Mood in a Child
« on: May 24, 2020, 03:26:12 pm »
I've never seen a child do this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Has anyone seen it younger?

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't Make Platinum Weapon
« on: May 24, 2020, 11:25:04 am »
I've been manipulating strange moods system to force the creation of artifact weapons and armor made from the metals that I specify. And it has worked fine. I have a whole set of very sharp weapons.

Now I want an artifact platinum mace, but it's not working. When a mood starts I forbid all the other metals, just as I have in the past. But when the dwarf claims his forge, he demands bluemetal specifically. And he stands there refusing to move until I unforbid it.

This bugs me, because I always make a point of assembling every moodable material to make sure that I don't get stuck on a mood. But now there's a demand that's not on the usual list. I'll take a screenshot the next time it happens.

DF Gameplay Questions / Cavern FPS Drop - Resolved
« on: May 23, 2020, 02:38:06 pm »
I killed an FB in the first cavern. Usually I bring FBs into a training pit through an airlock system. But a lucky headshot killed this one too early.

I like to butcher FBs. It's a thing I do. So I forbade everything in the cavern and marched them down there. I had them dump some corpses. I built a butcher's shop next to the FB corpse and cut it up. I built a little wall and bridge along the edge of the screen to control any future FBs who appear in that part of the cavern.

In doing this, my FPS dropped by half, to the edge of unplayable. So I pulled all my dwarves back, deconstructed the butcher's shop, and walled off the cavern. But my FPS has barely recovered.

Is there anything I can do to reverse the FPS hit of walking into the cavern?

Edit: Never mind. It seems to have fixed itself.

DF Gameplay Questions / Artifact Quests in Fortress Mode
« on: May 22, 2020, 11:07:52 am »
One of the many bugs of unretiring a fort seems to be that artifacts lose their special "Made Here" status. Ever since unretiring, I've had adventurers stop by and say that they're on a quest for one of my artifacts. I turn them away, of course. These are dwarves! But I'm wondering if these frustrated questers will eventually turn to some type of violence to get the artifact that they've decided they can't live without.

DF Gameplay Questions / Overrun by Hostile Scholars
« on: May 18, 2020, 11:56:15 pm »
After unretiring a fortress I'm swamped with scholars, only some of whom are guests: https://ibb.co/tYbn2p0

The hostile scholars aren't attacking. They're just standing around. I've turned visitors down to zero, and so far it has had no effect on the guests or the hostile scholars.

I could kill them, but that would make a mess and might cause a loyalty cascade. Can anyone suggest a tidier way, maybe from DFHack, to make them leave or disappear?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Weapon Speeds in Adventure
« on: May 18, 2020, 02:11:15 pm »
I'm not asking about weapon velocity. I mean time to strike. Do the different weapons take different numbers of ticks between initiating a strike and landing it? And what about weapons with different types of attacks, such as the short sword?

DF Gameplay Questions / Grizzly Bear Man Won't Shoot
« on: May 17, 2020, 12:48:56 pm »
The grizzly bear man has a crossbow in his left hand and a quiver on his upper body with lots of bolts. He's 18 tiles away from an FB in a pit, and he won't shoot. I had the same setup with a dwarf, and he pumped bolts into the FB until he went legendary.

Is the problem here racial? Are grizzly bear men capable of using crossbows?
