DF Gameplay Questions / Where are my goblins?
« on: March 13, 2008, 07:12:00 am »
I am now in the fifth year of my current fortress. In the previous 4 years, the only goblins I have seen are 2 goblin snatchers. Not one ambush.
Last year, my population passed 80. No sieges yet.
The only thing I can think of is that it might be related to the goblin kings from year 1 not marrying and not having any offspring or succesors:

(from world_history-region1.txt)

The Gall-Jackal of Patterning, Goblins
Worship List
 Arstruk, demon: fire, death, torture
Ruler List

  • Arstruk (b.???, Reign Began: 1), *** Original Line, Never Married
         No Children
    ...

    The Doom of Salves, Goblins
    Worship List
Zom Wraithbones, demon: fire, death, torture
    Ruler List

  • Zom Wraithbones (b.???, Reign Began: 1), *** Original Line, Never Married
         No Children
    ...

    The Lone Monsters, Goblins
    Worship List
Uktang the Grave of Dust, demon: fire, death, torture
    Ruler List

  • Uktang the Grave of Dust (b.???, Reign Began: 1), *** Original Line, Never Married
         No Children

    ...

    The Spattered Plague, Goblins
    Worship List
Lozu the Brands of Bone, demon: fire, death, torture
    Ruler List

  • Lozu the Brands of Bone (b.???, Reign Began: 1), *** Original Line, Never Married
         No Children

    ...

    The Branded Ticks, Goblins
    Worship List
Zom Dustphantom the Wicked Crypts, demon: fire, death, torture
    Ruler List

  • Zom Dustphantom the Wicked Crypts (b.???, Reign Began: 1), *** Original Line, Never Married
         No Children

    ...

Is it possible that all goblin civilisations were wiped out in the history of the world?
Or is it just plain bad luck and will the goblins eventually come?

That works for goblin corpses, but not for antmen corpses. Their cave is also inside..

DF Gameplay Questions / multiple mayors (again)
« on: November 05, 2007, 09:57:00 am »
First posted this as a bug report. But now I'm starting to believe it is actually a feature. My fort now has 3 mayors. The original leader, and two newly elected.. That's right.. ELECTED. So I suppose it's perfectly normal nowadays for the dwarves to have some form of democracy. The old mayors keep their title however, this should not be so. For the rest, you can assign them jobs as normal and I believe only the new mayor has demands and mandates..(however I noticed an old export-ban still being listed with the old mayors' unit info). I let the old ones keep their rooms and give the new mayor fresh rooms but I don't know if the old mayors still require rooms. I suppose not if it is meant as a democratic feature.
So the question: Toady, is it a bug or a feature?
If it is a feature, dwarven society really is something: starting out a despotism (outpost leader), then going to democracy (mayor) and after that falling back to despotism (monarch despot king ordering dwarves to their deaths). Which brings up another question: is there still a king?

When digging, yep. When building you CAN start with the up staircase. (have to even when building up)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: So this diplomat is living in my fortress.
« on: November 20, 2007, 05:29:00 am »
Diplomats can't handle stairs on their way back (after meeting with your Mayor). Maybe it has been fixed in 33b. Dunno haven't checked all devnotes yet.
If teleport.exe works with this version you can zap him to ground level.
Or prevent him from going up or down stairs by drafting you Mayor into the military the moment the diplomat arrives and stationing him above ground.

If you channel water from below the SEA, chances are that it is salt water and not drinkable. Not from a darn well as well.

Did you already make Fine and Trifle pewter? I'm not sure, but I believe Lay pewter is made from Trifle pewter

In the old version (23) , running around naked gives less negative thought then running around in rotting clothes. That's why I never made any clothing and just waited until all my dwarves ran around naked and happy.  :)

I'm trying now in the new version to make clothes to see if the bug has been fixed. Judging from your report, apparently not.

I think you're on the right track there. My military almost never has any sparring accidents, while they are at least proficient now in ALL weapons. I did take care to switch my more experienced dwarves to crossbowtraining while n00bs were sparring. I always start training with wrestling skills. A high wrestling skill prevents a lot of injuries I believe. Most of the time my n00bs only wear leather. Only then, when they get weapon training, will I give them decent armor and shields. (at least iron)
My more experienced soldiers are not allowed to spar with dwarves who don't have at least competent wrestler, armor and shield skill.
The order of training I usually use is wrestler>>hammerdwarf>>swordsdwarf>>hammerdwarf>>axedwarf>>speardwarf.
Spears very much as the last training to prevent pierced lungs. (by the time my dwarves get to speartraining, they are superdwarvenly tough and have at least achieved master skill in armor and shield use. In between trainings I switch to crossbowtraining. And indeed I didn't use steel weapons for training. Only iron. (Lack of silver) Silver is indeed best, 50% damage, like wood.

Even if you found the right cloth, your dwarf would have been doomed. AFAIK, due to a bug, there is no way to obtain rock crystals to make crystal glass.

Babies take one year to become a child.
Children take 12 more years to become adults, though.
I think one of your immigrant children reached adulthood and you mistook him for a native born child. Immigrant children arrive with unknown age.

as for cloth.. I always bring a few pieces of cave spider silk with me on embark. Just in case I get early immigration and fey moods before I can buy some of the dwarven caravan. Saves lives.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A different barracks for each squad
« on: January 29, 2008, 07:53:00 am »
He asked for a solution different then putting them on duty.
Only one I can think of is to give your veterans crossbows and let them train with those while your greenhorns wrestle. When your n00bs are skilled/competent I think it is quite safe to let them spar with the veterans.

On a side note:
I once had a fort where all the wildlife mysteriously disappeared and didn't respawn (over-hunting maybe). So I turned on the hunting profession for all my dwarves. So my complete poulation (150 dwarves) walked around in *steel plate mail* and better. I let them train their armor use in small groups so that it didn't slow them down too much. Even works for miners and woodcutters, for you can hunt not only with bows, but also with axes and picks.
Might work also on evil maps where there is no wildlife except for the undead.
Who's afraid of the gobbo's? Not my 150 heavily armored dwarves.
