Indeed I have to second Burned Toast on the respawning fire imp issue. I've never had them respawn, not even in 25-year fortresses. Dead is dead, as far as native buggers are concerned.
Please, if we are wrong, Bogdanov, do tell and show us a save.

As far as I know, cave and magma creatures do not respawn. Wildlife should, however.
Did you have wildlife in the first place? Because it is possible to embark on a map that lacks wildife.

There is a self-executable. version 0.10. Works also with 38c.
To find it, look for a link on (I believe page 9) of the Dwarf companion thread in the general discussion forum.
Oh, and don't forget to install GTK runtime as well (second step on the DC page)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Goblin Sieges won't work properly

Your trader problem might be fixable by deconstructing and rebuilding your trade depot..
As for you skylights, maybe you can build a extra underground passageway to be used in case of siege? If you set it's traffic designation to restricted your dwarfs will still use the skylighted passages when they are allowed to go outside.
Or even simpler, make two doors so you can lock the extra passageway when you don't want it used.

Thanks. But still one would think that you could compare two AMD processors that came out not too far apart in time by clock speed.. Then again, maybe not, since the Turion was built for 64bit Vista.

Thanks for the info.
It can't be a RAM issue though. My old PC has 2 Gig, my laptop only 1.
Must be like you say, Windows eating part of the core's power.

Oh yeah, and my old pc is still running windows 2000 pro. Dunno if that makes a difference?

DF Gameplay Questions / performance issue
« on: May 16, 2008, 01:44:00 pm »
Aw bummer!

I just managed to get my 'old' pc back to work.
This one is not yet dual core, but it's single cpu is an AMD Athlon that runs around 1.3 Mhz.
This is faster than a single core of my dual AMD Turion Processor.
Since DF does not (yet) use dual core technology, I thought it would run faster on my old PC.
Wrong. Quite a bit slower even.
But what strikes me as odd is that when I pause the game, the FPS count stops at 87-88 instead of going to the max of 100.
Anybody have any idea how that could be?

Did you also set the correct shooting direction for your archery ranges?
And are you sure they are off-duty?

You can dig an up staircase from a wall. But remember you will still have to dig a down staircase from the layer above. If you have already mined out the wall, you will have to build a staircase with (b)uild >>(C)onstruct building >>(u)p staircase. Then you can dig a down staircase from the layer above to connect, or if there is empty space above the stairs, you can now build a down staircase.
If you like, you can also build longer stairs with the up/down staircase option.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mayor demands

Woohoo!!! Had another shot at installing Dwarf Companion, found the 0.10 exe and it works with 38c!! Now I can save my mayor (be it by periodically raising his happiness, can't find a way to remove the demand yet).

Well actually your mayor is elected based, among others, on the number of friends he has and his social skills. Since social skills develop when dwarves are on break or partying, the longer your dwarf lives in the fort, the better his social skills. So yeah. Mostly it are your skilled dwarfs who are elected.
My mayor still lives though. The Gand Royal Dining room manages to keep him happy so far. The last mayor was a grumpy ass anyway.

Thanks for quick reply. Hrmpf. The drowning pit it is then. Or maybe the maze of death... Can't choose..
I do have a few spare Trolls in cages that need feeding as well..
Can't get Companion to work. I install Python, but when I try to start Companion it mumbles about a missing dll.

Is this another bug?: My Count has unhappy thoughts for nobody being punished for recent failure. But I didn't fail any of his mandates. Only his wife died.. ANd yes, I do have enough asigned jails, guards and royal guards.

Oh, and for the armor part: I'm playing on a map without wildlife and am using the 'Armed Civilians Principle' I added to the wiki yesterday.(under design strategies>>fortress defence)
Which means ALL my dwarves are armoured, armed and shielded. Unfortunatly my civilians only wear full sets of GCS chitin leather armor, I don't have enough steel yet.

DF Gameplay Questions / Mayor demands
« on: May 16, 2008, 07:20:00 am »
Help!

My last mayor died in prison after accidentally killing a legendary bowyer

How he got to tantruming was by failing to meet a demand he had for 'item in office/throne room'.

I tried to build everything, all in silver when possible (he liked silver), green glass window, clear glass window, gem window, extra bed, tomb chain, cage. Nothing worked. Furniture in normal stone? Nope. He likes Rhyolite too, but it is not present on the map. Not even the bronze Colossus statue worked..

My legendary champion has been elected as the next mayor. Now he has a demand for 'item in bedroom'. What could it possibly be? I don't want to see this mayor freak out, he'd probably kill the whole fortress. Anyone?
