DF General Discussion / Fort Journals?
« on: May 17, 2013, 09:11:27 am »
Is there a forum or sub-forum anywhere that can be used for people to document their forts development?

I know that, as a raving extrovert, I'd find it easier to devote time to this amazing and challenging game if I could feedback achievements and get advice from other players in a structured way that didn't mess up/clutter up another sub-forum...

A bit like Paradox's AAR sections?  Some could be tutorials, some gameplay some roleplay or a mix it all up?

I have a 4 year old fort and am lost as to what to do with the few hundred dwarfs I'm managing to feed!!  I'm afraid to take too many away from hunting and fishing for fear they'll start to starve!

And I have very little military!

Ugh, it is difficult to tell.

The wiki says that you can't fish out of artificial bodies of water.  I assume this means can only sigh out of water tiles that were there at map gen?

So diverting the river to run underground and through my fortress would not give me a fishable river?

Also if fish go extinct on the map then fishing is over, so diverting the river could kill all the fish?

The wiki says you are good!

Prevention

Cave adaptation can be prevented by regular exposure to outdoor sunlight, which can be achieved by having an outdoor meeting area or high-traffic areas above ground. You can roof over the above ground area to prevent your dwarves getting rained on, yet it will still prevent cave adaptation. In other words, exposing your dwarves to areas that have ever been exposed to sunlight will prevent cave adaptation; it doesn't matter whether those areas have since been roofed over.

I was no where near the edge of the map, though thanks for that info I was wondering baout how to pump water out of the rivver and then off the map!

I'm still trying to figure out how pressure works and thus how to get water to a few z-levels below its starting point.

I guess I need to use diagonal U-bends for each z- level down.

Something like this:
# = stone
R = River tile
~ = water
Code: [Select]

Side View:
#RRR############
###~#~~~########
###~~~#~#~~~####
#######~~~#~#~~~
###########~~~##
But making sure that the water flows into each Ubend from a diagonal?

I built some adamantine weapons.  How do I now found them?  They are not in my weapons pile, magna forge and I take find them on the stocks list but my manager is rubbish so the list isn't very good.

Any advice?

I had a large amount of water I needed to let run out, so I smoothed the wall at the base of a large pit, then carve fortifications.  However, the water did not run out!  It stayed put!

I then dug out the tile, to find it immediately flood to level 7 the whole of the tunnel I had dug out for it to run off to.  It did this immediately.  Level 7 all the way to the edge of the tunnel, then it started to spread out normally.

Thankfully my only engrave managed to get out, but any ideas on what happened?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: beekeeping how-to?
« on: January 19, 2013, 07:33:50 am »
I'm having trouble getting my bee keeping started.  My map has both wild honey bee and bumblebee colonies.

I understand that the bumblebees are bugged and that my dwarfs will use them to fill a hive, where they then turn into unproductive honeybees.

I hope this only happens if there are no honey bee colonies on the map?

any advice on how to get started safely (and not end up with a tonne of unproductive pretend honey bees?)?

chained war dogs don't though if that is right?

I was going to use traps to show up any thieves on the way in...  I think My road needs to be longer and the only approach...

I guess caravans can not use stairs to access my trade depot even if I have built them 3 tiles wide?  The pack mules seem to have no problem.

However they do go up and down the natural ramps so can I use them instead?

It died... I have no idea how, but apparently the dwarf outside managed to kill it and it only killed 7 or 8 of mine.

No idea how to find out who killed it, there was no announcement. and I don't seem to be able to see much by using k on it's corpse or going via the units screen.

Better prepare more military right now and figure on what I want to focus on production wise to free up some dwarfs for military service!

Also seems like I only have 2 or 3 people dangerously unhappy, memorials and tombs seem to be holding it mostly at bay hopefully the one child who has gone melancholic may snap out of it.

Should I memorialize the beast?  I do not want it's ghost turning up later?

I assume there is no need to memorialize thieves and snatchers?

Thanks for all the advice.  I am setting up a series of alerts, one that is a safe bunker, another that attracts dwarfs to emergency entrances/exits which can be sealed up (stairways with some floor hatches made out of tough stuff!)  I really like the idea of shutting the world off!

Thanks for the advice all!  I think I will finish my fun tomorrow!  If I lose the fort I think I'll re-embark for the same one.  It will be a bit of a mess but could be fun to reclaim where I was driven from!

I have adamantine strands extracted should I both trying to make adamantine weapons (with my crappy weaponsmith ick!) I guess this titan will take some killing.  I don't think I have the experience to set up a cave-in trap at short notice!

I guess a stockpile of food and drink in the alert burrow could be useful?  maybe an alert Bunker lol...

Ok so the drop re-pressurized  it.  Doh!  I guess if I connected another diagonal at the bottom of my 3x3x3 pit, that would remove the pressure?

Ok so I'm having fun right now in my latest fortress.  A giant wombat desert titan has turned up and my military consisted of one marksdwarf.

I've managed to cut of entry to my fort but loads of my best dwarfs were outside.

I have no idea why!

So I'm trying to build a few weapons and arm some guys to try to kill this thing, but I'm pretty sure I'll be having hauntings before I can do that and my only good weaponsmith is outside!

So any advice on saving my fort?  and Secondly any ideas on how to keep dwarfs who have no business being outside, inside or at least recall everyone underground?

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Pressure

there are quite a bit of designs that can eliminate pressure, most notably if you get water to flow only diagonally.

This has confused me.

I dug a 3x3x3 pit next to the river (in its middle not at the edges) I then channelled out the top corner so the river would flow into the pit via a diagonal.  The 3x3x3 pit totally filled up to the same z level as the river.

From the wiki page, it says if flowing through a diagonal it shouldn't be under pressure and so should only fill to one z-Level lower!

As example A on the page?

So I'm very confused as to why the whole thing has filled up now!
