DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: When dwarves become creative
« on: September 27, 2007, 05:11:00 am »
Yeah, murders committed under fell mood are not crimes when considering the dwarven society. When one of those fell mooders kills one of your legendary guys, you are going to keep it as a crime. I have drowned one such idiot...

:D Thats hilarious! I once had a craftsdwarf that hauled 6 items, including elephant leather and 3 different stones into a clothmaker's shop and then (s)he  went mad because (s)he didn't aquire the right gem... Annoying.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What kills most of your dwarves?

Definently water. I've lost about 30 dwarves due to a troll that went through my floodgate, several miners into moats, and several nobles and a couple of legendary crafters to seasonal floods. My dwarves just can't swim...

I've never had any dwarf succumbing to starving even in my first fortresses. I usually rush to the river and build about 10 x 20 or so farming area and floodgate it. Then I plant plump helmets for the first two seasons and then carry on to the other crops. I also fish, hunt and gather food and manage well enough until caravans come. Now I have about 2000 lavish meals for my 96 dwarves. On the other hand  I have 13 farmers and 8 peasants that are also farming.

Serrated disk also strikes 3 times, but with a damage of 120. It deals creater damage, when your main motive is to create enough damage that the giant screw would go through and drop the elephant with one critical (crit boost 2 for screw vs. 1 for ball).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bought meat rotting in depot
« on: September 14, 2007, 05:09:00 am »
I usually handle the situation so that I only by 10 food at a time and wait until my haulers have nearly finished hauling those. Then I'll by another 10 and so on. After most of the food is in my storage I buy all the stuff I want and that's not going to rot. It usually helps, if you set your dwarves to ignore minerals (o -> s). You can check how much there is left to haul by pressing t and then moving your cursor to the depot. Then you'll see all the stuff that sits in the depot. In this list stuff waiting for trade is marked with yellow after the items name, stuff that has a hauling job attached to it is marked with cyan [tsk] and stuff that does not have hauling job is marked with empty space. It is easy to go through the list and check how much stuff there still is to be moved and decide to shop again when there is few item to be moved to storages.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Strange engravings...
« on: September 10, 2007, 08:02:00 am »
I have seen pictures of dwarf burning (my metalsmith was pushed to lava river when my cave collapsed) and melting (same thing?). Only other things that withers in pictures of my current fortress are demons and my dwarves haven't seen any of those, yet.

My legendary engraver is producing lots of masterful engravings of withering platinum flasks, among other things. How does metal wither? Does it imply of me not using my legendary platinum flask, what do you think? Or is this just program fitting words together without realizing their meaning?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Are dwarves *really* that inept?
« on: September 10, 2007, 07:51:00 am »
I noticed that animals like deers can push dwarves into water. If your mason was unconscious because of the hit, (s)he wouldn't have gotten up. And of course, dwarves are really bad swimmers and apparently can't decide into what direction to swim...

Actually there is something like a high quality cut gem. It's called large gem and it is finished good on its own and it can be encrusted and decorated as well... It's not very common though and I think it has nothing to do with gem cutters skill...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most obscure legendary?

I once had a legendary butcher, but that was because my fortress had over 100 cats, I routinely slaughtered all the kittens (and yeas, made mittens out of them...). I didn't need any hunters or other sources of meat and every dwarf was happy...

Dwarves like eating in solitude. That's why they are eating in offices...
