From what you've described it sounds like a dual-core CPU with Hyper-threading.  Even if you isolate a logical "CPU" to DF you're going to end up with other threads using the same core, although as others have said your OS will probably account for this and schedule accordingly especially if you have it on a higher priority.

But if you do go to the effort of isolating DF, you'll need to disable Hyper-threading as well (usually in BIOS) if you really want to use the entire core just for DF.

DF Modding / Re: Modding in wax blocks?
« on: February 15, 2018, 03:20:13 pm »
I added wax statues with this reaction.  I imagine it's trivially modified to make blocks instead:

[REACTION:MAKE_WAX_STATUE]
   [NAME:make wax statue]
   [BUILDING:CRAFTSMAN:NONE]
   [REAGENT:wax:300:GLOB:NONE:NONE:NONE]
      [REACTION_CLASS:WAX]
   [PRODUCT:100:1:STATUE:NONE:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:wax:NONE]
   [SKILL:WAX_WORKING]

All the basic modding rules apply:  you need to make a whole new world for new reactions to show up, and you'll also need to add your reaction ( [PERMITTED_REACTION:MAKE_WAX_STATUE] in this case) under [ENTITY:MOUNTAIN] in entity_default.txt

EDIT: Yep, according to the wiki you want the BLOCKS tag in your product.  I believe this will work, but I haven't tested it yet:

[REACTION:MAKE_WAX_BLOCK]
   [NAME:make wax block]
   [BUILDING:CRAFTSMAN:NONE]
   [REAGENT:wax:300:GLOB:NONE:NONE:NONE]
      [REACTION_CLASS:WAX]
   [PRODUCT:100:1:BLOCKS:NONE:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:wax:NONE]
   [SKILL:WAX_WORKING]

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Population cap/world size
« on: July 20, 2017, 03:13:40 pm »
I stick with a cap of about 80, but this is for gameplay reasons.  I feel like even at this number a lot of my Dwarves are often idling, and the more dwarves you have the more catastrophic a tantrum spiral is :P

I've never noticed worldgen sizing affecting FPS after the actual worldgen phase.  If you want 2000 years of worldgen, then obviously it's going to take awhile to make a huge world.
However, if you don't care about the stuff that worldgen adds (adventure mode destinations, historical figures) then feel free to gen a few pocket worlds until you have the biomes you want.

Embark size is is the biggest FPS hit of the three options you're asking about.  Unless you're making a sizable megaproject, 3x3 is more than enough to build a decent fortress.  After all, you can always expand vertically!  It's really only going to affect how much wood you have available (if you even have trees in your biome) and how large of caverns you need to worry about defending.  You can even experiment with a 1x1 embark if you're comfortable using DFHack.

And of course, the wiki has plenty to say about this: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Maximizing_framerate

EDIT: Oh, and since I notice you're not using a fantastic graphics chip: I got a big jump in FPS when my game window was large by lowering G_FPS_CAP to 8 in data/init/init.txt.  This value is how often your window redraws, and since this is a tile-based game anyway you're not going to notice a difference.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: opposite of burrows?
« on: April 17, 2015, 11:55:04 am »
its just that defining a burrow to a new and constantly expanding fortress is extremely annoying.

If you're not opposed to using it, DFHack has options for auto-expanding burrows to solve that problem.

But it's still fine to use Basilisk II to play Pathways Into Darkness and Escape Velocity, I hope  :D

ooo Escape Velocity.  Ambrosia Software actually sells a Windows version of EV Nova, you know.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Cleaning the map
« on: April 02, 2014, 09:49:07 am »
"autodump destroy" which will destroy all items under your cursor.

To clarify, I believe this command only destroys items under your cursor that are already marked for dumping.

This topic mentions cleaning the dead list.  It doesn't appear to give any noticeable performance gain but of course you can try it anyway.

EDIT: You might also want to consider how your dwarves are pathing.  Try to make use of traffic designations to stop your dwarves from considering dead-end routes.  For instance, adding a few tiles of RESTRICTED traffic going into a cave that you don't use may help speed up their pathing decisions (or walling it off entirely until you decide to use it for something).

General Discussion / Re: Google Glass

Can it do gamma correction on meatspace objects?

IIRC it only projects information on a relatively small corner of one eye's lens.  So even if the camera could process images in real time well enough to do this, it can't project over your entire FOV, so no.

Life Advice / Re: Getting real tired of Firefox
« on: March 12, 2014, 09:50:35 am »
Assuming you've already done the basic checks for malware, have you done any troubleshooting for Firefox itself?  I've been using Firefox for over a decade and have never had any not-easily-fixable trouble with it.  It sounds like you're using at least a few add-ons.  You can launch Firefox in 'safe mode', which disables all your add-ons.  If you don't have problems while using safe mode, then one of your add-ons probably updated and messed itself up (or failed to update, and is no longer as compatible with a recent update of Firefox).

If you DO still have problems, it may be your profile.  You can either simply clear all your web data ("Clear recent history", clear all), or launch the Profile manager (from a command prompt do 'firefox -p') and just make a new profile.  (The profile manager is a nice, sort of 'hidden feature' of Firefox.  My wife and I can now both use my laptop and not destroy each other's saved tabs).

I probably have over 100 tabs (oops, should probably clean that out) open over four tab groups in Firefox and have no lag issues.  I use Firefox across Ubuntu, Windows, and Android and it works great on all of them, and they're all using Sync so I can easily open a tab I had open on, say, my work laptop after I get home.

Chrome can save your preferences, bookmarks, passwords, etc. as a profile that you can access from any device with Chrome

Firefox can do this, too, if you bother to take five seconds to set up Sync.  And as a bonus, it lacks the shadiness of Google.  You can even set up your own server to hold the Sync information if you feel like figuring out how to build the software they use.  That's the beauty of open source software.

EDIT: Also, if you're not already, use the add-on Ghostery.  Everyone should be using this add-on.  It blocks all the stupid crap that sites use to track you (facebook buttons, G+ buttons, third party ad tracker cookies, etc.) and serve irritating ads and pop-ups to you, while not entirely blocking all advertising like adblock pro does (so sites that use non-invasive advertising can still make money off of it).

Life Advice / Re: I'm very... apathetic?
« on: February 12, 2014, 01:53:28 pm »
I used to have that problem (to a greater extent than I still do).  My girlfriend in high school told me the same thing ("you never show any emotion").  For a while I had to remind myself to smile/frown/[insert appropriate expression here] when things happened, and it did feel like I was "acting".

But I found after a while, being more expressive came more naturally.  It was sort of like a habit: after doing it consciously for a while, I was doing it unconsciously.

Lazer mice don't do that either, it's an optical mouse thing.

Hammerwatch is fun, I've been playing through it with a buddy of mine.  Lack of add/drop players is annoying though.  If someone wants to join you you have to start the whole campaign over again.  You CAN resume a multiplayer campaign, but only with the same people you were playing it with before.

I want a shooter game, WAIT!!! Hear me out, that is set in space. Now I know there are a lot, but I don't mean just in a space ship, but in space. The multiplayer would have standard deathmatch/team deathmatch/capture the flag gamemodes but there would be no gravity. Instead, players would use their jetpacks to move around and the recoil from their guns (it pushes back not up). While the jet pack would help getting around normally, using the guns would send you speeding in the opposite direction which could be used for quick escapes. Also, you can't just change your direction. You maintain your momentum due to a lack of any opposing force and use either your jetpack or your gun to counteract your motion.
There would also be floating obstacles to manouver around.

Isn't Shattered Horizon basically this?  I've never played it, so maybe guns don't have recoil, but it's a shooter, in space, where you move with your jet pack.

Not all lava is an infinite source.  If you break the glass surrounding the lava in the science labs, it drains like water.  It's pressurized, so it fills more area than it starts in, but it's not infinite.  So I guess the lava at the bottom is different than other lava, or something.

So, does every planet have a breathable atmosphere?  Or do you need some sort of breathing apparatus for some places?
