DF Gameplay Questions / Won't wake up

Three years ago my fort's only good gem setter hurt himself. He was taken to the hospital where he got work done on his arm and leg (sutures, setting, dressing). That took about two months to complete. Ever since, he hasn't left the bed. He just lays there with a blinking X over him. His v-w screen says he's unconscious and everything's in white. His personal health screen has "status: No health problems". But he's been this way for years.

I've deconstructed the bed. He just lays on the floor making his buddies feed him and give him water.

I've trained him on all the low quality gems and can't really afford to train another.

What to do?

DF Gameplay Questions / Babysplosion

I've set pop cap to 80 for FPS. But then babies! I've only had 2 or 3 children migrate to the fort. But I now have 8 children and 11 babies. My pop is 103 and FPS is down to low 30s. None of my other forts had so many little ones. I thought default vanilla had less babies.

I just opened DF and within 5 minutes, 3 more babies were born!

Make it stop.

And on a grimmer note, can I get rig of existing babies? My DF experience mostly consists of a never ending battle to keep FPS playable. It's a full time job to haul old cloths, kill/process every animal in sight, clean up messes, etc. But now pop explosion is breaking me. Do I need to start yet another fort with the babies set way low or is there hope for "Portalurns"?

DF Gameplay Questions / Disturbed by shooting gallery

I set up a shooting gallery to train my marksdwarves. I built a whole bunch of goblin cages connected to a lever behind pits and fortifications with shooters on the other side. Someone pulled the lever and marksdwarves started leveling up. Yay!

But wait... now I'm flooded with announcements that my workers have stopped work because they've been interrupted by goblins and the target practice guys are the only goblins around. Even some farmer 10 floors up is bothered.

How do I get the workers to chill about the target practice downstairs?

The humans vanished from the world quite a few years back. Trading is such a vital part of my fortress that I miss them.

Is there a way to get dwarven traders to come in the summer as well as the fall?

DF Gameplay Questions / A mysterious thirst

Riddle me this:

Urist McCottonmouth, my legendary engraver just died of thirst in his bedroom. There are no doors in it. He's 3 tiles from the central 3x3 stairway that is close to everything in the fortress. My z menu reports 14,875 drinks which, according to my stocks screen, cover 10 types of booze. Nine z-levels above where he died are 2 wells within 10 tiles of the stairs. According to the health menu, no one else is thirsty. There are burrows but no one is assigned to them and the alerts are not active.

Why did he die? I can't figure it out.

DF Gameplay Questions / Sieges prohibit trading

My latest problem is a lack of trading. Every time merchants show up, there's a siege at its back. Half the merchants can't get to safety in time and are slaughtered. The other half get behind my walls until the battle is over and then promptly depart without ever setting foot in the depot.

I rely on  trading. The only metal I have under foot is gold and I have no fuel. The waves of goblinite aren't cutting it. My legendary axedwarf swings a copper axe! It's been a year since there were trades.

My fortune swells and my military shrinks. Approaching Fun.

Advice?

DF Gameplay Questions / Training exotic animals

I've edited out the EXOTIC tags in the animals I'm looking to train and they have the TRAINABLE tag. I've logged out of DF a few times. I've even restarted my computer a few times. The animals aren't in pasture but wandering around the fort. But my trainer doesn't seem to recognize them. "...cancels Train War Animal: No creature."

What have I missed?

DF Gameplay Questions / Load cage trap spam

I've been getting "Mechanic cancels load cage trap: Needs empty cage trap" spam for game years.

I have things that have been caught in traps. I have empty cage traps. And according to "stocks", I have empty cages. I don't have any traps designated to be built.

What's the deal?

My military has a Roc on the ropes. I want the meat though. And I know that once something it killed by the military,the butcher won't touch it.
