Utilities and 3rd Party Applications / Re: DFHack 0.34.11 r1

A typical prospector line:

Code: [Select]
     TETRAHEDRITE :     30441 Z:  42..103
This means there are 30,441 tiles of tetrahedrite ore on the map.  Z: 42...103 means they are located from z-levels 42 to 103.  This does not mean they are on every level from 42 to 103 though, it just means the uppermost vein(s) are on 103 and the lowermost on 42.  You could very well have something like 20 levels in between somewhere that does not have the substance in question.  There's also the column you get when you ask for value, that states the material value of the item.

Careful reading of the prospect all report can help you determine where the caverns and magma are on the map:  the highest point for tower-caps and fungiwoods will give you an idea of where cavern 1 is, and the lowest point should be near the bottom of cavern 2.  The location of plants like nether-caps will tell you where cavern 3 is.  The listing for magma near the top will tell you how far down you have to dig to get some.

Personally I would have done it out of either steel, or a combo of gold, silver, platinum, and gem windows, but soap is equally awesome :D

That wouldn't be dwarfy enough though.  I am planning to use ruby gem windows for the eyes, and have the trunks tipped with gold, but those are just accents.

Dorfs also seem to be unable to stay off the mine tracks even when you set them to restricted traffic, so there's the added advantage of occasional injuries thus preventing skill rust in doctors.

Getting ambushed by archers at night while I'm sleeping.  Then one of them shoots me in the head while I'm waking up.  Hate not being able to react to stuff.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: World Gen and Towers
« on: June 30, 2012, 06:57:43 pm »
First, setting the number of secrets in Advanced World gen helps.  The more secrets there are, the more tablets can be created and given to necromancers.  The next thing you need is history, it takes time for the gods to give the tablets to necromancers and the for the necromancers to build a tower and gather students and raise the dead.  So you'll need at least a century or so of history to get those towers sprouting up.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: barrels of "liquid"
« on: June 30, 2012, 04:13:04 pm »
They waste enough time drinking the way it is, they might as well be useful and do it in the name of !!SCIENCE!!

And if these random barrels of liquid aren't enough for a fort's needs, I've noticed that you can request Mountainhome send you more in the next caravan.  If you've used DFHack to fix the human merchants, you can bum some extra liquid off them too.

Latest screenshot is at the top of the page and a few posts up.  I've only added a few more blocks to the legs since I posted that last pic.

Strange. I tried this and got the exact same world, but with good/evil regions in different places.
Is it because I use a mac?

Maybe.  I've read different OSes can read the seeds differently.  Still, if the world geography is the same, and the only significant difference is the good and evil placements, you might still have the same mix of minerals and ores, just not as much excitement.

Looks cool, be sure to post the save when you're done!

I was planning on putting up a save as soon as the elephant is fully operational.  It will be reverted to ASCII so people can tileset it to their tastes.

You should add magma crabs to the magma fall and figure out a way to recycle the animals back to the start.

Won't work with the way I'm planning it.  The magma will be pumped out of the resevoir underneath the elephant through a grate to prevent magma imps and other irritations from getting into the fort, and there will be another grate in the trunk to block fliers from getting in.

Anyone interested in this fine world:

Here's the seed.

I almost aborted when I started this up, because the world name came up as "The World of Dawns".  So inappropriate for what I was going for here.  But then I decided to keep it for the twisted irony, and let's face it, it IS a world of dawns.  They just happen to be Romero-style dawns....

I reduced all good square counts to 0 (after my first attempt gave me a big ass good swamp in the middle of the map), bumped evil square counts WAY up, and for good evil measure increased evil rains and clouds to 500 and nearly doubled the amount of night trolls and bogeymen types.

Egg layers seem to produce 1 clutch per season, and it takes about a full season for a clutch to hatch if you have males where they can spore.  If you pasture a female on a nest box, she also seems to claim it right away and lay a clutch if she hasn't this season, so if you're locking doors to prevent access do it ASAP.

Yeah, I favor "Fist of Armok" for my hammerdorfs.

Year 106.

Map

Current view of the project:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another year of toil has ended, and the Crafts of Soap celebrate the beginning of their 6th year at this site.  The settlement has gone from being a tiny outpost to a significant dwarven city and duchy belonging to the civilization known as the Rock of Fortune.  The elephant grows ever higher while the mines slowly extend deep into the earth.  The mineral deposits in the volcano's cone have been mostly exhausted except for some remaining zinc veins, and the dwarves have begun to delve deep into the earth to find more iron and gold.  Work has begun on a rail system that will extend into the depths, but it will take quite some time to build, and the extent of the third cavern hasn't been fully plumbed.

The dwarves managed to successfully capture much of one of the emu storms that swarm across the map and managed to tame them.  A tame female skunk was purchased from the elves, while several more were caught and tamed.  A female emu was given a nest box, while the skunk was pastured in the animal pens, and a male for each was placed in the sporing chamber in the hopes of producing offspring.  Unfortunately, during the late autumn, the male emu reverted and killed the skunk.  Not all was lost though, near the end of the year the female skunk gave birth to several young giving the fortress a viable breeding population of skunks.  Now we must decide whether to use the skunks for meat or cage them up to be released against invaders.  The emu's clutch of eggs also hatched, and one of the males was born perfectly tamed.  The others are still somewhat feral, so they went into a seperate cage to await maturation.  With luck, we should soon have a viable breeding population of emus to suppliment the domestic poultry we've slowly obtained.

Shit.

This was my best engraver.  I spent many months training him by smoothing over various floors and walls so he'd be a highly skilled artisan.  Then the fool goes and stands on one of the minecart tracks and gets hit in the head.  Speaking of deaths, a miner who got grievously wounded in a cave-in nearly two years earlier was finally put out of my his misery.  He had a broken elbow that refused to heal and he was simply spending months in traction doing nothing.  Even when the traction bench was removed, his injury did not heal, and he simply returned to the hospital.   Finally, I deconstructed nearly every piece of furniture in the hospital and told him to go stand under the atom smasher.  The only bed left in the hospital was where a foolish child that got hit by a minecart (because she was apparently playing on the tracks in the upper part of the mountain for no good reason) was being treated.

DF General Discussion / Re: Lazy Newb Pack [0.34.11] [V13] Finally!

This could work.

It'll allow you to have your virtual screen size, and thus DF, larger than normal.

Ohhh, I'll have to take a look at this and not just for DF.  Stupid 1024x600 resolution on netbooks can get really really really annoying at times.
