I believe you can also put a floor grate over your sand/clay collection area and it will prevent stuff from growing.

I start with sheep, turkeys, and geese for my food production.  Sheep produce wool, milk and meat, and have one of the smallest pasture requirements.  They're the most effecient grazer in the game that has multiple products.  Turkeys are the most productive birds in terms of eggs and meat.  Geese produce nearly as much meat as turkeys, but mature much quicker, the downside is that they don't lay as many eggs.

The draft animals that come with the wagon get butchered ASAP.  I like to keep the animals pastured inside for safety, and the draft animals take up far too much space.

And any women who got knocked up before you hit the cap will still give birth as well, which will also put you over.

This is the sort of thing for which dorfs have invented atom smashers, upright spikes, magma chambers, and the like.

And a rather annoying one at that.

Better defended roads being causeways surrounded by magma of course.

Had a crash which wiped out some work so don't remember exactly where I'm at.

Had one of my disposable builders somehow cause a cave in and he drowned, leading to my first dorf casualty.  Don't know how that moron killed himself, but he left a wife and child behind.  The wife's only 21, boy is she going to be lonely.

Anyway, this is how things looked when we embarked:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We dug in right next to the wagon, and I have a wall blocking off the north end of that valley we're in.  Also removed the ramps on the embark level, so the only way in and out of the fort is through the wall.  As you can see, there's a volcano here, and I'm thinking of channeling out the ground to the north of the wall down a single z-level.  Then I'll set up a nice little Fuck the World device a few levels higher up, and with the main only approach a z-level below the main entrance, the lava will pool below the fort and there won't be a risk of it getting inside.

Keep the bogeymen, they're supposed to be part of adventure mode.

Yeah it is a nice bugfix. I won't have to build all my workshops from blocks just to prevent accidental forbid.

I started doing that myself after learning about those forbids the hard way.  That is I forbade all granite stones so my mason wouldn't make granite blocks while I was working on a magma pumpstack, only to find out all the workshops (quite a few) that had been build with granite had been shut down.  That caused more than a little bit of idling in the fort.  Hell, I got into the habit of bringing along a pair of gabbro blocks with me on embark to quickly get a carpenter's and mason's workshops up and running ASAP (gabbro because it is magma safe as another failsafe, and it's usually available unlike, say bauxite).

Yup, I learned the hard way to have an access stairwell whenever I dig out pits.

You can easily get above ground crops from merchants the moment you get caravans, so it helps to start a farm beforehand so you can start the moment you get some seeds ;)

Ah my mistake, I thought deserts were one of the biomes where you couldn't do surface farming.

And even if channelling gives you grass, I prefer to keep my grazers underground whenever possible for safety.

Processed the migration wave.

Best dwarf in the group, a Great Weapon/Armor/Metalsmith.  She's going to be spending the rest of her life down in the foundry.  Some minor combat levels, but she's not getting wasted on the army.  She arrived with her husband, who is getting drafted, since he also has some minor combat skills, and is otherwise just a Glazer, and their four youngest children.  The other children are adults and the oldest ones have some families of their own.  Some of them are warriors.  Three of them are dead, and the two oldest kids that arrived got in a scuffle with a cave dragon a few years back and survived.  It might be interesting to see if this family becomes one of the major pillars of my fort's community.

Few other notables, mostly farmers, rangers, and fishers.  There was a young niece of one of my immigrants who is a doctor, and there was a pretty good trader, who will replace the expedition leader as broker.  The dwarves who had some basic combat skills but no useful civilian skills will form the nucleus of our military force.  Three fishers were pressed into service as miners, and the rest were assigned jobs as needed through the fort.

Huh, my suspicions were actually right.  I saw that file with its 4096 pixel height and wondered if it was messing things up on me.  How many full animation cycles are on that thing?

Chopping it down to 2048 helped.  It loads with software rendering set to ANY, and I can move between z-levels again.  Now I got to turn the graphics options back on again to see what I can run.

Yeah, I don't really expect much from this computer, it's a cruddy little netbook.  And I'm used to turning everything off and turning it back on bit by bit to see what I can run.

PC gaming can get so frustrating.

Anyway, turning everything off didn't seem to help much at all.  And I can't switch between z-levels either.
