DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Canyon genned so deep that it breached the caverns.
« on: January 31, 2012, 04:14:29 pm »
I think I managed to get at least part of the original site to load. I did a 3x3 embark up in the northwest where the two rivers meet. It was a mess. It looked liked there were chunks of underground and above ground tiles scattered all over multiple z-levels. The river itself looked like it might have been impressive, but I couldn't unpause the game after starting, I think the flow from all the water starting in midair and then plunging down all the levels was too much for my computer to handle. So that's what a big bug looks like?
The other site was somewhat of a letdown. How the heck am I supposed to get at all that delicious candy with that ugly semimolten rock in the way? It looked like it took up an entire embark square. Worse, DFHack reveal showed that the candy cane was hollow at least near the surface levels, that's not a good sign. There is another candy spire down in the third cavern to the southeast. The top levels of it are exposed in the cavern for easy extraction and it's not hollow for several levels. There's also a nice magma pipe to the south. Though I'm not sure if the map is even playable.

« on: January 30, 2012, 06:25:33 pm »Damn... damn.
Gotta love how much of that is masterwork too.
Hmm yes, that it's bone (and shell) is indeed impressive.
One man's trash is another dorf's treasure.

Mountainhome has been asking me to make figurines for them too. Would be fun to see if I could get that to sell for 5 digits to a dwarf caravan.

note to self: set mineral scarcity in all future worlds to 100.
That site is like Dorf Heaven. Just about every metal imaginable, with an insane wealth of candy, piles of gems, and plenty of coal.

Check this out:
It's up to 1270 dorfbucks. I think I'll leave it there, actually. I'm kind of curious to see just how many bones they'll stick on that thing.

That's because no one is posting there. After a time, posts get locked due to inactivity, which can be annoying, but it cuts down on necros. PC games tend to have less discussion than console games, because they often have their own dedicated forums elsewhere on the web.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: This leather harvesting idea wouldn't work, would it?
« on: January 30, 2012, 03:44:54 pm »After 31.25 I don't even bother with animal husbandry. It always ends for me with hundreds of animals walking around my dining room and trampling grass, starving, fighting, etc. I just butcher every non pet migrants bring on the spot, but keep a few cats around, Even cats are an annoyance with all that dead vermin.
All you have to do is pasture them. Non-grazers only need a 1x1 space and they'll be happy, egg layers need nests too. Immature offspring can all be shoved in a cage until they grow up and are either slaughtered or bred. I slaughter any stray grazers the immigrants bring in, because many of them require far too much space to be worth it, though sheep can be worth it since they only need a 4x4 space preferably dug out in a soil layer somewhere, and they can produce milk and wool as well as meat. Also, junk pets like rabbits and cavies which I certainly don't want breeding in my fort get atom smashed.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: I just traded with a trader profit of 17k,
« on: January 30, 2012, 03:37:30 pm »
Last two trades with the dwarf caravans gave me profits of 600k+ dorfbucks. That's because I have a ton of gold to crank out crafts, and I payed attention to the stuff Mountainhome wanted me to sell them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Help me with my Atom-smasher?
« on: January 30, 2012, 03:35:02 pm »I've been DFing for a while now, but I'm just trying to build my first atom smasher. And failing. I assume I'm missing something basic. As I understand it, I just have a garbage dump activity zone under a drawbridge, which I drop with a lever. I've tried both putting a drawbridge over an existing dump (the bridge gets suspended with item blocking site), and putting a new dump under an existing drawbridge (no one uses the dump). What am I missing?
The second way should work. But make sure you don't have another dump zone elsewhere, because the dorfs only use one at a time.

DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress
« on: January 30, 2012, 03:28:25 pm »No real need. There's already a ton of cash in adventure mode and not much to spend it on. At least needing food will help drain off some of that cash. The new shops will give us better a better ability to spend money too. Probably not enough that we'll covet coinage, but it should help a bit. Once we get sites and livestock become available we'll have a boundless cash-sink to boot. We can be ranchers.
Money changers would be a good addition to the cities. I have an adventurer loaded down with loose change and big stacks of all sorts of random coinage. A money changer could be useful in say taking those big stacks of copper coins [3000] and giving you back an equvalent amount of gold which takes up less space and weight. Or exchanging coinage from other civiliaztions at a better rate than the shops.

« on: January 30, 2012, 12:26:23 am »I predict the new version will come out within the first few days of February. Possibly 1/2/12.
Groundhog Day, eh? If it doesn't come out, will we have to wait six more weeks?
Groundhog's Day is Feb 2.
Ah, in my haste to make yet another clever remark I misread that. That looks like January 1, but since January is almost over, my brain skipped to the next month.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Orphaned dwarven babies
« on: January 27, 2012, 10:44:18 pm »
Hmm, it might be good to do some !!SCIENCE!! on this AND combine it with Dwarven Child Care. This dwarf didn't look like a good candidate though, too weak.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Does Dwarf Fortress have a moral/aesop?
« on: January 27, 2012, 04:57:54 pm »The example of carrying babies into battle, thats just dwarven stupidity (quirk of the game code)
On the matter of dwarf stupidity:
I've been thinking about this. Dwarves are all raging drunks. They booze almost from the moment they're born till they die. This includes pregnant women. Now most of us probably know that drinking during pregnancy impairs mental development in the fetus. So is dwarf stupidity really a bug, or has Toady managed a decent simulation of racial fetal alcohol syndrome?
