DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Does Dwarf Fortress have a moral/aesop?
« on: January 26, 2012, 05:36:14 pm »
I'm not sure there is a moral in a game where women use their own babies as shields or some guy murders the whole fort just because his favorite sock fell in the magma.

Ok, I got it to work, but the mechanics feel pretty clunky.  And I see what you guys mean about long reload times, I'm not sure if ranged weapons are really worth the bother.   Prolly should stick to throwing fluffy wamblers.

If by that, you mean choosing one particular civilization of each race that we will use, then it's an excellent idea, but we couldn't really expect to mandate it and be able to enforce it.

Yeah, that's what I mean.  Enforcing it would likely be difficult, especially with this many people, but it would still be a nice touch to the project.

Here's the latest bit of dorfiness to hit my fortress:

Yup, the shepherd dragged a stray ram off to the farmer's workshop and tried to milk it, and cancelled the job.  Said shepherd is female too -- you think she'd know better.

Huh, I thought I tried that.  Maybe I didn't do it in the proper order or something.

How are bows and crossbows supposed to work?  I've been carrying a crossbow and some bolts around with me in adventure mode, but when I use the "f" key to fire it, it tells me I have nothing left to fire.  The help menu in the game and the wiki aren't giving any good information either.

Sounds interesting, I wouldn't mind making a fort in this world.  I'd probably go just with regular old dwarves, preferably at a non-evil site that has a good mix of cliffs and flat areas.  A river or stream would be good too, but don't really care about volcanoes.  I'd be more interested in creating an elaborate fort to explore rather than cranking out gear for adventurers.  OTOH, I'd probably not bother too much with traps at all, since the fort is meant to be explored.

What do you guys think about choosing a particular civilization to play for each race?

Yeah, I think this is one of the most ultimate necro's I've ever seen.  And here I clicked on the thread thinking Toady was talking about the new release.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stuff growing in my moat...
« on: January 24, 2012, 12:19:18 am »
if it's a serious problem (and it shouldn't be), just put a road on the moat.  It'll prevent things from growing.  Or you could get really hardcore and dig that moat down to the first rock layer you hit.

If you want something a little more concrete, I guess you could open the raws and change the caste name for female dogs to "bitch" (which when not used as a profanity is meant to refer to female dogs).

Nothing like having the goblin invaders come into the fort and trigger open that cage packed full of war bitches.

That's how I do it.  My military alert burrow includes the main dining hall, and I keep all my levers there since there's nearly always an idle dwarf around to pull them.

I think that
Spoiler: this image (click to show/hide)
puts it fairly well.

The image looks fun, but nothing of that can happen in Dwarf Fortress, or can it?
If it can, please show me a screenshot and you will convince me to play.

Yeah, that's all stuff from DF.  You've got a Giant Desert Scorpion, a Bronze Colossus, a goblin war party, and that last thing I'm guessing is one of the circus clowns, or possibly a Forgotten Beast.  The very last panel is what happens after a thrilling game of Dwarf Checkers.

I haven't found the game particularly difficult, but I've also followed some video tutorials, made extensive use of the wiki, and this is the sort of game that appeals to me in the first place.  It's not really outright hard, more like complex, with a lot of things to learn, a good deal of which is optional.  It also helped that I built strong defenses early and keep my fortresses well fortified.

How to have fun?

In the winter, goblin will come to celebrate Christmas with you.  Make sure to let them into your fort so you can party properly.  You'll need to host them properly and serve refreshments, luckily, you can find some delicious candy deep within the earth.  Make sure you get as much of it as you can for the goblins.  Getting it will also provide your dwarves and the goblins with a great deal of fun, and everyone knows a good party needs entertainment to be a smash.
