I'm of two minds when it comes to that. Half of this is story, yes, but the other half is dedicated to making bloodthirsty unstoppable killing machines  super soldiers  useful dwarves.

I figure that one or two super-dwarves working non-stop as farmers should take care of it, but I may need to increase the number of !!SCIENTISTS!! to 10. We'll see, but so far there's a pretty good stockpile of prepared meals and booze. The main problem right now is I'm lacking seeds for anything other than pig tails and cave wheat due to hungry dwarves. Oh, and migrant waves have brought me up to 39 dwarves already, which is a tad annoying, since I don't have defenses set up other than a few bridges and a lot of dogs. On the other hand, I have a lot of dogs and useless leeches valuable workers.

The other issue is that I need to choose which dwarves will be locked away, and that's problematic with my !!SCIENTISTS!! intermarrying.

EDIT:

In good news, I just realized that I don't have seeds because my dwarves aren't brewing. Something about a lack of barrels.

Updated. Also, if anyone would like to have a dwarf named after them, let me know! :)

A figure emerges from the mists. He has been travelling for many years, but has now finally arrived at his destination. In his hands he holds a slate, upon which has been engraved orders from the king. It is a new mandate, one unlike any seen before. A mandate for weapons. A mandate for armour. A mandate for the ultimate soldiers the like of which will once and for all end the threats against all of dwarvenkind. It is, in short, the ultimate mandate to perform !!SCIENCE!! in all of its horrendous glory, not to be ended until every elf, goblin, human, and beast from a forgotten age has been destroyed. Blood for Armok!

I've returned from a very long hiatus with a new fort, ScarredAngels of Death! :D

More or less my goal regarding this is to have !!FUN!! experimenting upon my !!Dwarves!! for !!SCIENCE!!, including testing out various builds for Project Spartan (see Dwarven Childcare). New projects will be undertaken as suggested by other !!SCIENTISTS!!, and world saves will be available upon request.

Story updates! :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Weird dream
« on: February 13, 2012, 10:47:25 am »
Dwarf Fortress has officially invaded my mind. I've started dreaming in ASCII. >.>

There was some sort of creature that breathed deadly dust, but it was also a pet. I pastured it near the entrance of my fort to act as a guard animal, and a cat or something wandered by.

Next thing I know, the cat's dead from bleeding lungs, and one of my soldiers goes to investigate. He steps on the blood spatter and immediately starts having -his- lungs bleed too. He eventually recovered, but I had to think of a way to use magma to clean up the blood before the rest of the fortress was infected.

What's weird is that I wasn't even concerned with getting rid of the creature.  :o

Dwarf Therapist helps a lot, but large immigrant waves are still really obnoxious.  I have to go to the border and assign every dwarf as it comes in, or if I'm feeling lazy just give them the "immigrant" job title to deal with them later- and that's the easy way.  Otherwise I'm stuck sifting through pages and pages of ill-managed dwarves later fixing their job assignments.
Try sorting them by migration wave once you get a new group, and then check to see what their skills are like. It makes assigning jobs for the new workers rather simple and easy, especially since you can click on read to see the entire group before they even show up at the edge of the screen.

Also, when sorted by migration wave, you can click the skill boxes associated with waves to assign that job to every dwarf in that group. Want another twenty farmers? Easily done.

Some things I like to avoid are weapon traps, cage traps, and traps in general that aren't used to train my military, with the exception of single-use traps for emergencies. I also don't use danger rooms except in rather rare occasions, such as a dwarf that I'm sending on a suicide mission. My military is consistently made up almost purely of miners, with a militia of crossbow dwarves which includes almost the entire population of the fortress.

I also like to make a fortress that never goes outside, though this is a restriction that I only use maybe half the time.

1. Dwarf Therapist.
2. Project SPARTAN.
3. Project Blow-Up-World.
4.  ???
5. Profit!

With these five steps, you'll be well on your way to a successful fortress of over 200 dwarves. :D
